there is also a financial aspect here as well
rookie contract=$840k
practice squad contract =$13-$18k per week
If the player took the offer from another team, he would also get the rookie pay.

Presuming another offer, the player chose the patriots.

And don’t forget the playoffs earn paychecks beyond their base contracts.

… they might have had a better chance to play elsewhere this year or next.

Does Swinson really believe that he will beat out Chaisson, Landry or Ponder for reps when he the team hasn't elevated him all season? I'm not even counting Jennings. I expect that Swinson will be inactive and MAYBE will still be on the 53 for the playoffs when Williams is back.
Being on the field is one consideration. Being on the 53 is another.

Getting a playoff check is another. Expect that requires being on the 53. Or there might be some sort of a single game elevation in playoffs but not sure.

Getting a ring is yet another. Don’t believe it even requires being on the 53 either.

It’s not as simple as just being signed to another team’s roster from the PS. Saunders is a good example, he was just cut, after we signed him to our roster from Miami’s PS.

So a player could leave the Pats PS to join the Jetes or Browns, lose whatever future possibilities he had here, and then get cut a couple of weeks later.

I’d expect players would be likely to give their current team the chance to match if they’re on the PS of a good team.

The practice squad still exists; they get their same salary ($13K for rookies) per week. All players on the 53 earn the same salary for playoffs; this year, it's about $55K per game for the first two rounds, with the Super Bowl winners each earning about $375K total. [If you want to know more, it's covered in Article 37 of the CBA.]

As for the rings, it's up to the team. Most of them will give PS members rings, though typically less ornate ones than the players/coaches get.

Yes, and we have seen in past (BB) years, the team gave official ones to folks who were with the team for only part of the season (gone to IR, traded even I think once), and also coaches or advisors who contributed but arent there w/ team at SB itself.
Then also, as we learned this year; the team members and other official recipients can also personally buy "Family-member replica rings" or some such named thing that dont have real diamonds. So cost 5 figures instead of 6.

The league pays them playoff checks, too.

If dippre cannot block , he should be deemed useless .

I liked what Tonga brought in. Let's hope dippre is a plus version of holilins as a blocker. Westover has underwhelmed . Let's see if dippre can be 50% of what Washington does for Steelers. Logically he should open up lanes for Henderson better than Tonga with faster speed and better blocking abilities .

But Tonga was awesome as a fullback. I would call him a pancake - back.
I saw some good blocking in the limited reps in preseason.

His ability as a receiver is definitely a question but not his speed.

Maybe teams are sniffing around that the Patriots aren't calling up some of their better young players, when it's obvious they're needed.

Have we been stashing these players?
You can’t stash a player on the practice squad

You can use an elevation on an experienced player instead of going with the better talented rookie.

Why would you do that? It makes no sense.
Practice squad players can be signed by any team at any time.

"The Big Dippre." Two catches: Double Dippre. Win one for the Dippre.

The possibilities are endless. (Can he play at all?)

Watch the highlight video from last year at Bama. He has good hands, good size, ok speed and can block. He isn't Gronk but he should be serviceable. Should allow for some new twists on some specific plays.

I'm excited to see what Dippre can do. He was considered a strong run blocker coming out of 'Bama. Can't hurt.
Dippre is needed.

With Brown playing blocking TE on Thursday night, we had exactly ZERO backups at RG, C, LG and TE.

As usual, Westover didn't play at TE. He played a lot at FB.
============
How bad is Wallace? Murphy was active instead of Wallace, even though we had no backups on the IOL. At least he could have been active as an emergency backup in case of injuries.
========
I do get it. If there had been an injury on the IOL, Brown would have come in with Bryant or Lowe being then called upon to play blocking TE.

You would prefer that Dippre were on another team's roster this week. We get it.
That's not what I'm saying at all.

I started this thread and the second post on page 1 says I like that he's on the roster.

Because it makes no sense. What would be the reason to do that?

I'm not going to debate you because you only see black and white,

They never have elevated the two players. Perhaps they wanted to hold off until later season because if either flashed the team would need to negotiate a roster spot for them.

People used to call it the Foxboro Flu during preseason which I thought was crap.

Here it makes sense. Shorten their first season rather than having them exposed a little early.

Vrabel's a guy who will purposely not score a TD so he can leave the other team with no time left, so this type of thinking is certainly possible.

The strategy of keeping Dippre on the Practice Squad with no elevations simply asked whether any other team was willing to sign him, as occurred with Jones. Thankfully the answer was no.

Or, perhaps, like Swinson, Dippre told the team that he agreed to Practice Squad pay for the whole year or until another team offered to activate him to their roster.
====================
Apparently these two players were and are willing to be Practice Squad players at $12K a week because they want a chance to compete next year and be part of the future of the team, that is, unless another team gave them an offer.
================
Vrabel is doing the best he can for the team, getting players he wants for the future $12K a year as long as he had to do so. In the meantime (in the case of Swinson), other players were being elevated and were paid rookie salary.

Congrats to Vrabel. This strategy has gotten the players to pledge loyalty to the team.
