Based on the way the question was asked, we might very well be. Huge testament to the players they added how they’re coaching them and how they’re playing. At this point playoffs are a virtual lock though so it’s more pertinent to me to talk about how I project them there and that’s a different question.
I’d take PHI, KC, LAR, DET over us in a playoff game when you consider the rosters and experience and I’m on the fence about GB, BUF, SEA, DEN, TB - toss up for any of those games. I’m really not a believer in IND so I’d take us over them in a game.
I’m not really liking what I’m seeing from Maye lately in the context of our chances this year. You see this a lot with young QBs where they make the great plays but it comes with the losing plays. And it’s ok, it’s not some indictment that he’s not going to be an elite QB some day or even that he isn’t already. But when he takes sacks instead of throwing it away, that kills drives. He’s getting kinda ballsy with the windows he tries to throw it to and it’s led to bad picks. Some situations are “gotta have it” but very few plays are actually do or die to where you can’t just move onto the next play if your QB misses a great play. Overly negative plays at the QB spot are things you oftentimes can’t recover from because you don’t get the ball back for the next play after a turnover or if a sack totally dooms a drive that’s sort of a turnover in a way. It’s a normal thing - very few QBs are ready to be the focal point of a contending team so early in their career.
Basically the last two games Maye is looking like a more normal career arc. Crazy talented, makes crazy good plays, but still needs to smooth some things out to make sure he’s playing WINNING football. It’s looking like his leap or skipping all those steps all the way right to elite, MVP type of QB might have been pronounced a bit too soon. If he can’t get back on track to that, I don’t view us in that top, top class because I don’t think the rest of our roster is strong enough for that without elite, winning QB play with all the rough edges smoothed out like Maye had been doing.
