It's an interesting article. I have a few concerns due to the inaccuracies in the section on Mayo becoming a HC, but there's a hell of a lot to be optimistic about here. [Note: It was written just after the Buffalo game, but was paywalled until today.]

Good article. I’d like to know what are the inaccuracies that concern you in the section about Mayo?

(1) Minor point, but the clause allowing Mayo to become HC without a coaching search wasn't bizarre. The choice to give it to him might have been, but not the clause itself. (It's been used a number of times in the past.)

(2) More importantly, it says "Sources indicate that Belichick didn’t know Mayo slipped this verbiage into his previous contract extension." By all accounts, Kraft made this decision; it wasn't something Mayo demanded.

I think even the second is relatively minor. The key point was Belichick being ignorant of it, not who put it in. And I recall at the time there were reports of Mayo going behind Belichick’s back to meet with Kraft during Bill’s last season here. That context make me feel that Bill being unaware of the succession plan is a key factor, much more than whether Kraft or Mayo put that language into Mayo’s contract.

Important thing is, to me those are so minor compared to the overall sweep of the article I’m surprised they were worthy of mention. To me there were much worse blemishes in the missing words and sentence fragments and grammatical errors. Seems there was no proofreading.

Moreover, the media knew about it when he signed the contract. Belichick absolutely knew about it.

Kraft said on at least one occasion that they had a great head coaching candidate on their staff when asked about a possible successor to Belichick. And I'm pretty sure it's been reported that Belichick wasn't speaking to Mayo in 23', so it's almost certain Belichick knew Kraft's intentions.

Oh great more Belichick lies.......

How would you feel if you found out that a coach on your staff went over your head to negotiate a successor contract? It doesn't matter if he knew about before it was used. The fact it was done behind his back in preparation to replace him is the issue. If it leaked the day after it was inked doesn't really change that.

Presumably if this was done with McD it was done with Bill's knowledge and as a way to keep McD from leaving which is a lot different then what we've heard about the Mayo stuff.

The successor clause was used, and submitted to the NFL for approval. Everyone knew of it and likely at the time BB,RK,and Mayo were all aligned. As Tom Curran reported.. no one foresaw/anticipated the roster would erode and team would would look like it did.. the timeline was accelerated.. I refuse to believe BB didn't know about it. Mayo was a BB disciple and came into coaching at the request of BB.

Bottom line, I wanted Vrabel last year instead of Mayo. Didn’t know Mayo would be such a bad coach, just knew Vrabel was already a good coach. Every Mayo news conference made me cringe, especially the first one with the whole “Thunder” thing.

Absolutely positively.. a guy who wrote/signed players and coaches contracts...

I wanted Vrabel or Flores also… we got Mayo.

Luckily for us (hopefully) Jonathan learned a valuable lesson the last four years that owners have no clue about actual football operations and should leave it to the professionals and not meddle.

Mayo publicly mentioned he wanted to be a HC to the media. In hindsight Mayo should have went the route Vrabel did. Mayo had other opportunities... around the league.. he should have taken it.

JK is second in command in the Patriots organization also..running all the Kraft families businesses... I'm pretty sure he knew how to manage/operate a football team from the front office level financially that is.. but to your point not the coaching aspect..

I’m sure he understands business, not football.

NFL owners shouldn’t meddle. That’s a universal truth.
it is spelled out crystal clear.
Bill made every decision. the owners put a clause in Mayo's contract that Mayo is next man up once Bill retires. I firmly believe that is what the Krafts wanted. for Bill to break the record and then retire( I would be willing to bet McD had the same clause, but he left before Bill)
they had no idea he would go so far off the rails...

If our owner didn't meddle the 2011 CBA doesn't get done, the multiple billions generated from the TV deals doesn't see NFL owners pockets...

Nah… Jonathan meddled in coaching hires, scheme and player personnel. Owners should sign the checks and shut up.

That’s business, not football.
