The Bill megathread (HC at UNC, girlfriend, etc.)

Nobody said he did. I said it was Bill's modus operandi to trade players before that happened.

What you fail to understand is that the philosophy of trading a player a year early instead of a year late doesn't apply to players who are still great, which Brady clearly was. Getting rid of Brady and replacing him with Cam Newton was monumentally stupid. And Belichick owns that stupidity.

Apparently, Bill didn't understand that. I am omniscient and understand everything.

Sounds like UNC will let BB finish the season at least.

I've already come to that conclusion right from the time of the "two one-liners passing in the night" media exercise.

That suggested to me that the UNC execs made such a huge commitment that they cannot take the financial or reputational hit of dumping him.

In turn that suggests they are stuck trying to let him recruit next year's class too.

Could very well go down to be the biggest mistake in the history of CFB.

The contract UNC signed guarantees Bill $30M to coach till January 2028.

It becomes a question of how much of that they would be willing to eat, and so far, the answer is none.

EDIT for some more thoughts...

Based on what I've read he's already been paid $10M of the $30M guarantee and your report says "any decisions about Belichick’s future will not come until the end of the season."

So I presume the thinking is we've already paid the $10M and it'd look really terrible if we cut ties now, so we're just going to put on the blinders and let things roll till the off season.

Personally I feel this means he gets to recruit the 2026 class and coaches the 2026 season as well, and at the end of the 2026 season things are not good they will eat the remaining $10M and hire someone new.

By that time the current execs will either be on to new jobs, or will make sure the blame falls on Bill and his entourage, or both.

Sucks for the kids in the program, but they can always jump into the portal and land somewhere else if they have some eligibility left.

Stub hub has pairs door for under 15 with fees included for Friday night. This could be the last chance to see Bill coach a barely meaningful game.

"3 rings" Lombardi's email basically told the current roster they have no future on the team they're gonna bring in a bunch of freshmen to rebuild the program. I bet that went over well.

Here's a "3 rings" Lombardi gem that I posted in the Lombardi topic. Maybe Bill's total faceplant on N'Keal Harry wasn't entirely of his own making. Meaning his problem wasn't evaluating WR's it was listening to blowhards like Lombardi.

I think Brady made that decision himself when he insisted upon a "no-franchise tag" clause in his 2019 contract, resulting in his playing for a new team in 2020 - but that doesn't negate your point.

Brady made that decision after it became clear that Belichick was planning on moving on from the 42 yr old QB - and in fact to Brady it was clear that they already HAD moved on from him given how they squandered the cost savings he provided to the team in terms of a below market contract that the expected would result in better free agent investments by the team

Instead, given where the Pats were in terms of cap constraints, Brady saw that BB had a team that needed to bottom out before it would come back up - and he was right.

By 2020 the Pats couldn't even HOPE to contend with a team like Tampa that had the cap resources to give Brady the complementary players he needed to win - and it worked.

I remember that soundbite doing the rounds. What an insufferable ass.

I don't think you are wrong - but if I'm not mistaken the college recruiting period is NOW so that alone ties the hands of UNC on making a move

Early Decision Applications are due as of November 1st - so the UNC AD will have an idea of how well BB/Hudson are doing on the recruiting front just in terms of gaining the interest of student athletes.

They know who is sought after and who is not - and even if they apply to UNC for early decision that doesn't mean they haven't done so for competing schools - all of whom will remind those recruits that BB wants to LIMIT the number of pro-scouts that can watch them, putting his spite ahead of their best interests.

So they will have an idea as of November 1, and a better idea by the end of December when they see how many of their desired athletes accept early admission and how many go to competing schools.

As of the begining of January - mid January, players from other teams can elect to go into the transfer portal. My guess would be they don't let BB get that far if he's being snubbed by recruits.

That's a window that allows a college team to reap some of the benefits of a new coach.

I'd say there's zero reason to let BB roll the dice on the portal this year if he's failed to show he can recruit, as most seem to agree he struck out with his transfer portal moves this past offseason.

And while, yes it may cost UNC a ton, they'd rather payoff BB than endure another 4 years of mockable mediocrity.

As far as BB's NFL prospects are concerned, while they'd all be wise to stay away, there's often ONE team that wants/needs a recognized name to jump start fan interest etc. so still wouldn't rule out an older owner thinking BB can win for them sooner than other coaches.

According to Google, NCAA football signing day is Feb 4, 2026. Plenty of time to get the recruits to commit to UNC with a new coach. D1 football players aren't going to worry about early decision. They're accepted.

It also mentions Lombardi saying the Cardinals weren't going to take Kyler Murray 1st overall because they already had Josh Rosen.

A real football savant we've got here.

Tampa was the team that had bottomed out.

By the time Tom showed up they already had Godwin, Evans, a strong defense, good coaching, etc.

Then indeed they laid out the cap for Brady, Gronk, Fournette, and lots of other pieces.

They even got one good year out of AB.

It was a tailor-made situation for TFB12.

I know this take won't resonate here with the BB is Satan crowd, but in BB's defense, NC is actually improving. They look better every week. They started the season looking unbelievable on their opening drive against TCU and then looked godawful for the rest of that game and the next 4 games(even though they had 2 wins). They actually looked like a well prepared team against Cal and looked even better against top 20 ranked Virginia. They coulda/woulda/shoulda won both those games. They still have issues on offense (I'm not a Gio Lopez fan but he has some good moments) but the defense and some of the WR's and RB's look decent. I think, like most of his recent Pats teams, the failures all start with the OL. They have 5 games left and I don't know if they will be favored in any of them, but they could win them all. But they could also lose them all. As long as they keep showing signs of improvement, I think it would be smart of UNC to bring BB back for another year. Remember, he was not successful in NE right off the bat. After the UCF and Clemson games, I was ready to have him go, but now the team actually looks like they are playing for him and taking steps forward. Now they just need to learn to win. I want to see him do well since he gave NE the best 20year run ever.

Interesting and surprising tidbit in today's The Athletic article. I thought that, given all the reported drama, UNC would have a hard time recruiting. Yet the article states:

"There’s no question the Tar Heels could use an influx of talent. They’re trying to do that. No college program has more commitments in the 2026 recruiting cycle than UNC. Eleven blue-chip recruits are among the 37 pledges in the class, according to the 247Sports Composite. It’s a top-30 class in terms of average player rating and fifth overall in the ACC behind Miami, Clemson, Florida State and SMU."

North Carolina’s struggles continue under Bill Belichick — is it talent or scheme?
