Ok, after all the gathered info and opinions that have been offered, I now have my top 3 trades and their priorities. Unfortunately 2 of them are within the division which make them less likely and/or will increase the cost to get them.
The priorities are #1 - Safety
#2 - RB
#3 - Edge
For the most part I'm not looking for the stars, just someone solid to add to the depth of the rotation and upgrade us athletically. Hawkins would make a fine #3 safety. The addition of Budda Baker would be the bolt of lightning that would jump start our defense for the "adequate" category to something to be worried about. His addition would make EVERY one better. I'd be willing to part with a day two pick if we can get him signed to a 2 to 3 year deal.
RB- Bryce H the Jets RB would seem to be ideal, but any of the vast number of guys that have been bantyed about would be find. The fact is we don't need a replacement per se, we just need a 3rd guy to replace Gibson and do what he did. It would probably take an overpay to get them trade within the division. A 4th at a minimum.
Edge - Phillips is the type of guy I'm looking for. Not a star...yet, but someone coming off 2 years of injuries, playing good if not spectacular football and would add depth and the POTENTIAL to be something more.
IIRC we DON'T need another WR. We are currently the 6th best passing attack in the league and are no where NEAR our peak potential with our current group. Think about it. given the cap and draft assets it would take to get a true #1 WR, will the group's production go up THAT much from where it is now or would he just be taking targets and yds from the guys who are already here.?
Finally, based on what I'm hearing, with all the talk of the running game, is that we are NOT as far as it would seem from getting a respectable run game, good enough to compliment and already very good passing game. Good running games take a lot of timing in the blocking and cuts for the backs. I partially blame the soft camps and the fact the OL is unfamiliar with each other and the RB's.
If you look closely at the play where Maye makes that great pass with the Bill's DT dragging on his left arm. I wanted to know how he got there. It turns out that he lined up over Wilson's inside shoulder at the snap BOTH Wilson and Campbell pull down to the right and BOTH pass up this guy and he ends up following Campbell and chases down Maye as he slows down his roll out. No one touched him, or even saw him. That's a mistake, either in execution or design. Maybe Campbell should have peeled back and taken him. Maybe Josh thought the ball would be out before the DT could be a factor. We don't know. That is why PFF scores are just indications not absolutes.
Point being is just because the running game isn't working now, doesn't mean it won't improve with more familiarity on the part of a group playing a new offense, and don't know each other from adam.
