WRAL Sports' Pat Welter joined 99.9 The Fan's "The Drive" with Tim Donnelly to discuss his report on the inner workings of Bill Belichick's North Carolina football program.

This is one of the two reporters who did the WRAL story and he literally says "So many of these people I met working on this story, that was the first thing out of their mouth" referring to the story's first quote, "It's an unstructured mess. There's no culture, no organization. It's a complete disaster.". Later in the video he talks about how he ran the article through several layers of UNC Athletics to get feedback and got no real pushback at all. So, in short, the article is pretty much on target.
The reporter also says he doesn't blame UNC for swinging for the fences, but in hindsight they should have done more due diligence to see if Bill was "dialed in to the point he needed to be" with the main fault being "poor communication at all levels".
He said reports still praise Bill as "still having it" as a coach, but the lack of communication and the poor organizational structure minimizes its impact. He says that there is "isolation" between Bill and the players, and even between Bill and senior UNC Athletics leaders.
He also said the main message he got from senior UNC Athletics people he spoke to at length was that Bill needed to accept the help others are offering him. The implication to me is that so far, he hasn't.
Overall it seems UNC Athletics hopes this article prompts Bill to change his ways, but the reporter pointed out some of the "petty" things Bill has recently done to suggest that he isn't showing much willingness to accept input from others.
IMO this subtle back-and-forth via the media isn't going to work. UNC Athletics needs to be much more involved. They need to sit down with him and go through his schedule and make sure he's putting in the time to do the things this article says he doesn't do, such as have more 1-1 time with players. They need to come up with a plan to address the divide between the recruits and the portal guys. Just punishing one coach who handed out too many tickets isn't going to fix the situation.
