Bill vs TCU game thread

By the numbers: Why Bill Belichick's UNC debut was a disaster for the ages at North Carolina

Some tidbits:

"However, the final score doesn't do justice to just how devastating a performance Belichick's debut in Chapel Hill really was for the team. Here are key stats that help contextualize just how depressingly they performed.

- Bill Belichick allowed the most points in a game of his career as a head coach, moving past a 47-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills in 2021.
  • - Belichick suffered the second-worst loss of his career, trailing only a 38-3 loss to the Cowboys in 2023.
  • - Belichick has trailed by 34+ points only four times in 511 games as a head coach. "
+ BB’s defense gave up 258 yards rushing. The most ever surrendered by a BB defense.

Edit: Second most. 280 rushing allowed in the Broncos comeback game in 2013 when Moreno had a career game. I thought the Tebow Pats regular season game was previously the highest and that was 252 yards.

Not into kicking people when they’re down, says more about who’s doing the kicking than it does about the one who is down.

I’m on the record on this forum saying he’s in Bill Walsh at Stanford mode, I posted that in 2022. Things have passed him by but those guys don’t ever accept that. Hell, I think 100 year old Marv Levy thinks he can still do it.

See, I can do the “I told you so” routine here also but I don’t pretend anyone here will - or should - give me any more credence on that than I think most of us here give to those taking the victory lap this morning.

What's wrong with following a coach or player when they leave NE? Especially after having so much success here. I rooted for Charley Weis and Romeo Crennel after they left. Same with Brady, Gronk and a few others.

Things should never have gotten to the point where so many Pats fans are hoping Bill falls flat on his face.

I wasn't his biggest fan at the end but in a way I feel kind of sad for Bill.

You're right, nothing is wrong with that. Just making a minor point that college football in North Carolina is about as far removed from New England sports culture as things get -- even with someone like BB involved.

I'm neutral, not rooting for Bill to fail or succeed in this endeavor. Although, I think he made a bad choice by going there along with several similarly bad choices from 2022-on.

winning is hard with kids, friends and kids of friends working along side

Lmaoooo burn. Ouch

Wow, I feel bad for him.
Just watching highlights shows how vastly unbalanced talent is at the college level. Those UNC kids were so inferior in size, speed, toughness. BB wanted to prove something... so he certainly has his opportunity.

I was intrigued by my own reaction to what unfolded last night.

Reason being that despite Bill making a fool of himself recently. going full-weirdo, and torching the Patriots and Krafts to anyone who will listen, I figured I’d still end up pulling for him to win at UNC because I’ll always be grateful for six freaking superbowls.

Instead, I found myself somewhat torn between satisfied watching him be humbled, and sad that he seems to have become so arrogant and insulated that he believed he could just roll out his Superbowl rings in Chapel Hill and win.

Kirby Smart has a vastly superior roster this year to Bill and I could see GA losing 3 games.

And Kirby is a very good coach.

College football is about roster talent and superstars.

UNC doesn’t have either.

Final strange thought:

The final chapters I expected from Bill and TB2 have literally played out in reverse.

I thought Tom would go to Tampa, look like a shell of himself, and ruin his legacy.

I thought Bill would win a SB without Tom and ride of into the sunset.

Man did I get that backwards.

Here’s where Bill needs to look to make sure it doesn’t get ugly…

Duke.

If UNC loses to Duke in football they will run him out of town .

He can and will lose to Clemson, and probably Wake Forest.

He can’t lose to Duke AND have all the weird personal stuff going on.

I think it was a fair assumption that the player would fall off first. And frankly, I think in 2019 a lot of people wanted to pin that season on the idea that Brady was declining and the problem because it was more convenient to replace one player vs uproot a failing system. The truth is the coach had been falling off for awhile as a GM and then as a coach.

Also unfortunately it feels like somewhere around 2017 Belichick really started to buy his own hype and got him and his inner circle to think he was a be all end all and now he has trouble adapting and realizing that he can't just make lemonade out of lemons.

In the end espn put Nike in the booth wearing a headset

Stepping back and considering the inbalance between the two teams. TCU, with a very good record last year and a core of returning veterans vs 70 new players who've never played together and no pre-season games. In retrospect, we should have expected this. What will be telling is if/how the team improves as the season proceeds. That's where the coaching will on display.

TCU looks really loaded this year. Good QB, good weapons, tough defense. Looks like they play 4 ranked opponents, and can see them finishing 10-2 or thereabouts. By the end of the year this loss may not look so bad for UNC, though they better get their act together if they have the talent to.

I became a UNC football fan when BB moved there.

I thought I had quite a life but I guess I need to find one

No need to emulate Bill's bad choices.

No need to emulate Bill's bad choices.
True. Some parts of my life are pretty complicated so I am trying to simplify everything else (other than following a new NCAAF team).

For me this was going to be the interesting question. Could Belichick overcome superior athletic talent with his strategic abilities? Based upon the early return the answer appears to be no, but there’s still a long way to go.
He thought he could do the same thing in the NFL too.

He was wrong.

No need to emulate Bill's bad choices.

Fair. Emulating the 24 year old girlfriend situation is probably a high-priority item for a lot of guys in their 70s.

One game against a vastly superior team. TCU is underrated. I'll wait for the season to play out before making any judgements.
If TCU, a middle-of-the-road Big 12 team, is "vastly superior" then that speaks volumes about Belichick's inability to recruit.

Good news for Belichick is that it can only get better.

Naw, it can definitely get worse.

Don't you think most of his opponents are looking at last night's tape and licking their chops?

What is it that they should be afraid of, other than his reputation?

If true, it begs the question, "What was he thinking?" Especially already filthy rich at age 73. He might've been better off doing media gigs like last year, or involving himself with some NFL team as an advisor like Tuna did. BB is an NFL guy, college football the way it's set up today is not his element.

At this point this is just one more bad decision from late-period Bill. Letting his relationship with Brady deteriorate rather than extending him in the early summer of 2018. Going with Cam Newton in 2020. Going with MP, JJ and Sons in 2022. Not being able to find a WR1 in either FA or the draft. Turning over his public relations job to a 24 year old that he's dating at the same time.

Coaching can't create athleticism.

It’s game one of his first season. Y’all are crazy.
