Gronk to retire as a Patriot?

There's a reason he "doubly-screwed" the Patriots.

There are always two sides to every story.

Oh yeah... he was so screwed by the Patriots. From 20114-2018, during his peak production years, he was in the top 5 paid TEs in the NFL, less than $100K from the top spot. The Patriots paid him over $53 Million over 8 years. He was a professional football player that wanted to act like he was playing high school football and mean Coach Bill wouldn't let him. Boo hoo.

FWIW, I loved Gronk. I still have a Gronkowski game jersey. I also have a Gronk Christmas ornament that still goes on the tree every year. I ever chose mug 87 for my mug in the York River Landing's Mug Club (not anymore). I will always have fond memories of his time playing for the Patriots. That doesn't excuse him going out of his way to screw them on his way out the door. I guess he just wanted to act like a high schooler to the end.

Ah, you get the point of the come back for a day stuff is when someone finished their career someplace else. There are always some fences to be mended. Gronk’s a first ballot Hall of Fame kinda guy and a legend.

His body was broken down when he quit the Pats. He took a year and Brady talked him into going to Tampa for a ring. Get over it

If it meant that much to him he would not have unretired to sign elsewhere. When he did that he said the Pats were second in his affections behind that other team. Let him stand on that decision not backtrack again.

Of course. It’s Gronk. Who tf cares what he did/does off the field?? When he was here, he balled tf out & was the main weapon for our second dynasty run. For that, he’ll always be endeared. Bowers, Kittle, La Porta, Kelce,
Mc Bride etc are awesome talents, but there is the ultimate standard when referring to the TE position; Gronk is and will always be that. Greatest TE ever. Period.

Gronk is a HoF player and represented the uniform and himself well here. There were definitely some turbulence here but I think they stem from the cutthroat, shrewd business that is the NFL. BB was hard line. Gronk and Rosenhaus's tactics were hard line.

Enough time has passed and it's time the org and Gronk to acknowledge each other.

This is easily the most nuanced and adult take on the situation in the whole thread. As such I really like how no one has given you a like or agree.

Had Belichick treated him like the first ballot HOF player he was there wouldn’t have been an issue, unfortunately the only person Belichick believed should be paid as the best was Belichick, and rather than give guys like Seymour, Brady, Gronk, Mankins, Wilfork and Edelman their due he belittled their contributions and made them fight him for every penny. The only person I blame for the difficulties these guys faced in negotiations is Belichick, although Kraft seemed to play a role in the Mankins issue.

You can blame Gronk all you want, but he wasn’t the problem.

Rosenhaus was the person advising him on how to deal with the Patriots negotiations, and he has always used whatever leverage he can find to maximize their end of the bargain. All Gronk did was to follow his agents advice.

Gronk’s Dad said the relationship with Bill ended during the 2012 season. Putting Gronk out on the field goal unit late in the 4th quarter in a blowout win vs Indy was one of Bill’s worst coaching decisions. He ended up breaking his forearm.

I’m not sure what signing him to a one day contract accomplishes, maybe it makes some fans feel better, to me Gronk is a Patriot and always will be, every time he comes to Foxboro or attends a game fans will give him a standing ovation, the Krafts will always love him. He’ll wear a red jacket and a gold jacket some day. I’m not sure what signing a fake one day contract does, it’s not like they choose a helmet for their HOF bust.

Rosenhaus had nothing to do with Gronk's first retirement. There was no financial benefit to his retirement. And specifically, Rosenhaus had nothing to do with the timing of Gronk's first retirement. In fact, I would bet that any agent who is continuing to make deals for his clients with the NFL, would advise his clients to not screw over his team like this. There nothing good that can come out of that.

Look at it from Rosenhaus' view - Gronk's retirement was his worst outcome, as his client would stop generating revenue for him. Don't fool yourself into thinking that Rosenhaus isn't it for the money too.

I don’t think it does anything other than give the Pats an opportunity to do an event with Gronk. It’s a feel-good bit of showmanship.

We disagree. I think Rosenhaus counseled Gronkowski and all his clients on all of their career moves, and didn’t just stand idly by while they make big career decisions. I also think that players have every right to play hardball as hard as they like with multi billion dollar organizations that don’t give one **** about them, only about their bottom line. Belichick was a total bastard in his contract negotiations with all of their greatest players, and they all resented the **** out of him and the organization for it, and I’m fine with them giving it back as hard as he gave it.

Have you ever listened to the players describe what dealing with Belichick on a contract was like? He was a total *******. He would bring them in and go on and on about all the things they “ couldn’t do,” and how much they sucked. He didn’t give them their due, he just ran them down. And one after another, guys like Seymour, Milloy, Law, Mankins, Gronk, Wilfork, Edelman, and Brady got sick and tired of being told they were dogshit and wanted out. And those are just the biggest names, he was even worse with the next tier down from them. Belichick was the GOAT coach, but he was also the GOAT ******* when it came to how he treated the players, and how he handled contract negotiations. And he created far more problems for the Patriots by being such an ******* than they ever did by playing hardball back and wanting out of town.

Ok. To each his own. Perspective has many influences and benefits. For most of us it takes a personal or particular event in order to change. The older I get the more and more I try move forward and get over myself (DWF’s, This is Water helped). Hopefully BB has changed at UNC
