Maye has stronger arm, is physically bigger has one year as an NFL starter under his belt and perhaps tougher
JJ Mcarthy is more accurate, perhaps more mobile, less prone to turnovers and faced tougher competition in college and has more talent surrounding him

It should be interesting. This year I think JJ Mccarthy will have better stats due to better talent, but if Maye can improve accuracy, decision making and cut down on turnovers I think he will be the better qb over their career.

McCarthy is very good also.

How can anyone know at this point? McCarthy is an unknown...

He played 2 quarters (2nd/3rd) in the first preseason game last year before being IRed.

How do you make an assessment off of such a small sample size?

Too soon to tell.

McCarthy is probably closer to being a finished product than Maye. McCarthy is also effectively in his rookie season and maybe so is Maye now that he’s coached by NFL caliber coaches.

The one thing I was consistently high on about McCarthy were just the intangibles. Seems like one of those guys that just 'finds a way' to get the job done. Beyond that, the only real question as far as 'ability' goes for McCarthy is just 'availability'. Hard to do the job from the little blue tent.

Maye was picked higher and more agreeably so from draftnicks than where JJ went.

Since then JJ missed a season with injury.

Unless you think last year hurt Maye's development more than injury to JJ did then I don't understand any logic in picking JJ over Maye.

If we consider the source of the question it suddenly becomes easier to understand my friend. We're talking an OP that already has Josh Simmons in Canton.
Just sayin'

If last year Drake Maye had Kevin O’Connell as a head coach, the OL protection that the Vikings provide, and Jefferson, Addison and Hockenson to throw to, Maye would have been in the MVP conversation. Instead he showed promise with our ****show of a team.

Coaching and roster construction will determine this. Not so much how much talent, drive, intangibles etc each guy has. Because if it was just about talent and upside, the answer is Maye.

McCarthy has a much better offense to work with. Top two receiver in the league. Arguably the best #2 WR in the league. A better OL. I think Vrabel is a better HC overall. But Minnesota has an offensive first HC that is McCarthy's OC. Minnesota really doesn't have many weaknesses that McCarthy has to deal with.

The Patriots had a luxury for many many years. One they no longer will have (likely). That luxury was having a QB who could make average players look much better than they were. I do believe they are doing everything possible to fix the offense for Maye.

We shall see.
However much O'Connell is raved as being an offensive genius, JMD has a lot of hardware and proved his consistency for 2 decades. Yes, I know it was mostly with Brady, but he got successful seasons with Kyle Orton & rookie Mac Jones too.
JJ has also had a "Bama-like" experience being on a super team at Michigan. While Maye had to struggle through the mediocre and down-right awful last 2 years.

JJ Stidham looked great for Denver yesterday,
I was livid when we traded Stiddy,

He’s a better number 2 than Dobbs or the other guy.

Back to the subject I felt JJs winning pedigree and accuracy was better.
Remained me some of Rodgers, Maye has the higher ceiling but I would be lying if I wasn’t concerned with the erratic accuracy which was the one red flag coming out the draft.

McDaniels, Henderson and Diggs should only see Maye evolve but the careless ball protection and the decision maker and release needs to be quicker and sharper.

Obviously having Jefferson is a plus. Not sure why JJ didn’t play yesterday as you would think he would need the reps? Seems to have got a good connection with his TE.

Drake has just about a whole year of game day experience behind him and better skills as far as I’m concerned. I’ll just let it play out and go with our guy.

I was and still am apart of the vocal minority here that doesn't really see much in McCarthy. Was glad we didn't draft him. Willing to eat crow if I'm wrong, but I just don't see anything to write home about.

And, all things considered, I look at this year as being Maye's Rookie Season.

Yes what a very fair comparison given the disparity in talent between the Pats and Viking. Clearly if JJ does well it’s because he’s a HoFer who’d succeed anywhere like a certain other recent Vikings QB.

Oh wait

Here's hoping Maye sharpens his game going forward because he has been sub-pedestrian in his 2 brief preseason appearances.
Less hospital balls would help.

We won't have a solid read on Maye until he's had a few real games under McD. If he can operate McD's system he'll go far.
My only significant complaint about Maye is the turnovers. He can be a very good NFL QB if he just cleans up some of the boneheaded plays like the one he had in the first preseason game.

He also throws high. Stop throwing high goddamnit.

Maye reminds more and more of Drew Bledsoe.
