He knows that this is likely the only contract he will ever have based on the average career length of a NFL RB. I applaud him for holding out but this is a reminder that the Pats should have never selected a RB that high to begin with IMO.

Is it too early to assume that he is "holding out"?? He might just be watching how other 2nd round picks are handling their negotiations, even though the salary is alloted.

The second round has long been the biggest battleground in rookie negotiations, particularly over salary guarantees. IIRC picks 33 and 34 got their entire deals guaranteed, which has thrown another wrench into the negotiations for everyone.

I believe that the other 2nd rounders that have signed in front of him have received unprecedented guaranteed contracts.

I hope Kraft handles this like Carnegie handled the Homeland Stiike.

The Texans fully guaranteed Jayden higgins contract so I imagine all the other second round picks are looking for the same .
It still hurts me that the Texans got Higgins, I’m pretty sure that’s who the Pats would’ve taken if he was available. Hopefully it doesn’t turn into another Justin Jefferson situation. In 2020, the Pats had the 23rd pick, and the Vikings drafted Jefferson at 22. If you watch the post 2020 draft Patriots video, you can see and hear someone say “Vikings picked Jefferson.” Don’t remember if it were Belichick or someone else, it was a Covid draft, so Belichick was home. But that’s when they traded down and out of the 1st round. I always hated that about Belichick, if he’s on the top of your board, try to trade up and get him, he never did that except for Gronk.

That being said, I love Henderson, I think he’s gonna be a major weapon for the Pats and Maye, he’ll sign before training camp, he’d be stupid not to.

I am not a fan of taking RBs high. And have always said that when you do take an RB high he needs to also be able to be a pass catching threat. Not just able to have soft hands, but almost be another WR threat on the field. And not only a threat, but actually deliver on that threat with high levels of production in the pass catching game year after year.

Faulk is in the Patriots HOF. Why? Cause he was a really good pass catching threat. He didn't have many 100 yard games. But he had huge catches, usually when needed the most. 3rd down and on keys plays. That is why Faulk was so valuable here. More valuable than his production on the stat sheet would suggest.

Henderson hopefully can give you those kind of plays. Yes, I hope he turns into a 1000K rusher and all that stuff... That's great and everything.. But if you don't ALSO have the catches usually isn't particularly meaningful production when it comes to effecting the win or loss column. So IMO if Henderson wants to earn his selection, that is where it has to happen. I think there is a good chance he can.

I've been over the draft a bit, and even in hindesight there isn't a clear better option to take for the Patriots at that point outside of a trade down or out. I will say I would have been perfectly happy with Skattebo in round 4 or the bottom of the 3rd. I think he will out play and out value many of the RBs taken above him. If we ended up with him instead of Henderson and used this pick on different spots, I would have been okay with it.

But looking at the board, who was there who would have been a day 1 starter for our team at 38 if we stand pat? I don't see anyone i feel confident in as a starting guard and WR was so deep at that point. Tre Harris, Williams, Beck... I think all 3 were similar value probably. Maybe even Noel is in that group. And while i wouldn't hate 2 rookie WRs on the second day I am happy with what we have now in Williams and Chism.

TE had some value. Particularly Fannin who i loved and still think is one of the steals of this draft. And I think may well be the best TE in this class. But he wouldn't have started this year... Probably would have been 3rd on our depth chart.

So while i am not a fan of taking RBs that high, I don't think there was another spot they could have got a guy and have him maybe be the best player at his spot on our team. Personally I have and will never be a fan of Stevenson. I don't think he does much for us.

He actually did that a lot in the second round, more recently with DBs that accomplished next to nothing (e.g., Duke Dawson and Joejuan Williams).

There is nothing to sweat about, these deals always get done.

I don't believe the problem is the position drafted. Rather as some others have mentioned some of the 2nd round rookies have gotten their entire salaries guaranteed. So his agent will want to get that for his client too. That will cause some extra negotiations to happen. I'm not worried. We will sign him eventually.

We already have a starting RB in place, so this won't affect us that much if he gets a late start in camp. Rookie RBs are the position that most easily make an impact their rookie year. Running the ball is instinctive. All he will have to learn are the plays and his blocking assignments. And by all reports he is the best blocking RB in the draft class so that should come easily.

If the Patriots missed out on some other position of need because they selected Henderson it might annoy me. They needed a change of pace back, a speed back, a receiving back… it doesn’t bother me they selected him. He was one of the best players available at a position of need, and really at any position.

They filled every need this offseason, doesn’t mean it will all work out, but they made the attempt and signed legit players and drafted quality prospects. Last year they signed some free agents who simply stunk.. terrible signings. They also reached in the draft.

Make an effort, acquire some quality players… if it doesn’t work at least they made a good effort and failed. I’ll take a good effort over a crappy effort all day. Pay the kid, the salaries are slotted based on draft position. Let’s go…

I disagree Bakes. We desperately needed a speed back and we got a good one.

Good point about the contract. Makes sense.

I heard very good things about Henderson from my good buddy the OSU fan. But then, my buddy's an OSU fan.

It’s probably language on how his money is guaranteed. Check out Julian Edelman’s channel as he talks about how teams get creative to take back money from players.

FWIW, the question has historically been over how much is guaranteed, and/or under what circumstances (e.g., guaranteed for injury vs. fully guaranteed).

That said, the Bengals are playing with fire with their first-round pick, Shemar Stewart, over clauses on forfeiting guarantees.
