The Bill megathread (HC at UNC, girlfriend, etc.)

The answer to the question, "Was Bill a great head coach?" depends simply on what year you are talking about. For a while he was, then he wasn't. This is a classic case in which a simple clarification of the question makes the answer - answers - clear.

As for the Tom-vs-Bill controversy - "Which guy is really responsible for the dynasty?" - this is akin to asking, "Which is more essential if you want to make salt, sodium or chlorine?" Both are ill-formed questions to which any answer is incomplete, erroneous. To return to our evaluation of Bill, the manner is which he was able to coach was dependent on Tom's remarkable skills and character. Because he was a great coach - for a time - Bill took advantage of Tom's skills and approach to the game. That is precisely what a wise coach would do. Then he stopped doing so, seemingly motivated more by an increasingly childish, even pathological need to retain his standing as the alpha in the relationship than by any commitment to "what is best for the team." He brought the same irresponsibly emotional and personal and ultimately petty motivation to the several bonehead moves with which we are all too familiar - from his ill-use of Mac, to his delusion that Tom was unnecessary to the manner in which he had such great success, to indulging in a Superbowl -losing snit with a DB who had dissed his fat Pal (or some such transgression), to assuming that his ass-kissing acolytes were so brilliant that he could dispense with simple diligence in building a coaching staff, and so on.

I taught a philosophy class for 25 years. Most of the useful work in that discipline is the yield of the simple practice of defining your terms and clarifiying the questions to which you are seeking answers. If you don't do that work, every argument is mere posturing, and every discussion just becomes a pissing contest.

As for for the present state of affairs, it's just very sad and embarrassing. Because death is literally inconceivable, it tends to remain abstract for we human beings, which a little paradoxically makes its inevitability comparatively painless to acknowledge because its reality is unavailable to thought. Not so with with the decline which precedes it with equal inevitability. A man's decline is protracted, generally ugly in various manners, painful, and plain for all to see. It is discouraging and relentless. How much worse it must be for a man with Bill's celebrity, where that decline becomes fodder for essentially idle banter and such pontification as this post might be. For celebrities, the private becomes public. How painful that must be.
Philosophy is about as useful as this hate filled diatribe.

I regard it ultimately as a compassionate post, frankly. There is nothing I have said about Bill that does not - or will not at some point - apply to all of us; but those who are shy about facing the realities of life will of course fail to see this. So it goes.

I am not religious, but I have studied the Bible to a degree. I reread Ecclesiastes this morning. Perhaps that experience informs my post. Perhaps you should reread it as well.

This is false, the fanboys here diminish the “team” aspect of football regularly. Moreover my annoyance with this take has less to do with Bill and more to do with the countless other players who contributed to this run.

Ty Law, Seymour, Adam V and on and on… these guys were studs. They weren’t good because Tom made them good. Tom was a snot nosed kid in 2001 and so were most of these fanboys recalling how it supposedly was. SB1 was clearly ten years old and only remembers a superhero appeared and saved the day. It’s hero worship… pure foolishness. Tom needed Seymour, Mankins and Wilfork as much they needed him.

And most importantly… where did Brady come from? Did he appear from the mist like Excalibur, did he land on the lawn of Foxboro like Superman? No, he was a developmental QB who needed a lot of work to become who he was. If he landed in Arizona instead of New England, anyone outside of a Michigan fan would not even know his name.

^ This from the same poster who tries to gaslight everyone that Bill Belichick wasn't the GM of the Patriots and had absolutely no say in drafting Mac Jones. Riiiight. Be serious your take has everything to do with your hoodied hero. Team Bill actually believes talking up the greatest quarterback of all time logically diminishes their hoodied hero and that makes them triggered. Lmao.

BRADY made Bill successful. By Bill's own admission. Bill needed Tom far more than vice versa. If not for Brady your hero far more likely than not would be a 2 time failed coach and forgotten by now. But look on the bright side there would be no Jordon so at least he wouldn't be a national laughingstock like he is today.

Also @ me if you're gonna call me out.

No it’s because there is none.

Gaslight? Bob announced “collaboration” back in 2021 after he just hired Wolf. A month ago BB gave an interview where he said personnel, ownership and coaching was a clusterfck his last three years.

But you think this ^ was my imagination, and why? Because Bob said Bill had total control after collaboration crashed and burned. Bob.. the same guy who created an entire documentary how his head coach and person most responsible for it had nothing to do with it… he was just a passenger.

Bill drafted and developed Brady chuckles. Sucks for you.

You pretending you’re not a hater is a joke.

Just admit it, it is freeing. A weight will be lifted.

Also admit you know nothing about football, you’re embarrassing yourself.

After I call you out for gaslighting you respond with more. Lol

Personnel and coaching was a clusterfk.. sure sounds like the GM's fault to me. And that's one reason why he's no longer here.

I love this team Bill line. Funny how they're always stumped trying to figure out why Bill couldn't do this with any other QB just Brady. Huh. Go figure.

^ Says the poster who wants us to think his hoodied hero wasn't the GM of the team when the results aren't good... only when they are good he gets all the credit. Lolol

Bill Belichick was the #1 guy in terms of players and personnel from the day he got here to the day he left.

Anyone suggesting the past few years weren't his fault is, as you noted above, just gaslighting.

During this time he drafted and developed the greatest player of all time and lead him to win so many championships that people lose count.

My favorite one is that 47-17 playoff demolition in Buffalo was all Mac Jones's fault. Not Bill's defense who literally had zero drive stops for the first time in NFL playoff history. TD, TD, TD, TD, TD, TD, TD, victory formation. That's all the QB's fault and the defense just "gave up" or something after he threw a pick. Can't blame that on the coach whose defense got their asses handed to them just because.
