I wish I had the article cached because it was outstanding but years ago the folks at Pats Pulpit did some analysis over the 2013 and 2014 season which basically showed every time Develin was in the formation JE and Gronk averaged more yards per catch and had a better catch % than when he was not on the field. Brady's #s were also better across the board.

The conclusion was selling the PA was easier and even with Dev going out as a decoy receiver, he needed to be covered thus leaving other receiving targets open.

To your point, if he does make the team and sees regular time, just by being out there opens things up for everyone else on the offense.

Thats really the main reason why JMD loves the FB
I also like what a FB brings.
Dev was able to gain that yard for the 1st. he was able to open a hole straight ahead. he was able to get wide on a sweep. he was able to bleed out into a lane for a (infrequent) pass. keeps the D guessing and on their heels.

I just got to thinking about guys like Develin and Alstott and how they played. I just keep seeing Hannah pulling to block and cant help but think he would have been an absolute stud as a FB.

FBs are fun. I want to see Rham behind a FB I think that could really help him.

you're like dog poop on the bottom of a shoe that won't scrape off, aren't you?
Not so clever way to avoid you having no evidence to assert Bell is a poor blocker.

I think Lampe might be like Devlin (played DL at Brown)
I would assume Lampe at most, gets 2-3 passes thrown his way in a season. He gets maybe 5-7 carries in a season. but he blocks like an OG out of the backfield with a running start, with a RB behind him
In 2010 at the Texas Pro Day, James Develin got on the bench and pressed it 39 times. That is why Develin at 6'3" 255 pounds could wham block a DT who outweighs him by 70 pounds.

Lampe is nothing like Develin, because despite being a lesser athlete James was strong.

Wolf gets all the **** for the rest of the draft so he really should get the credit for Maye. People want it both ways, good pick-Not Wolf, Bad Pick-Definitely Wolf.
He gets **** for the '24 draft, but it's possible Maye, Polk, Wallace, Robinson, Dial and Bell are still on the roster this year. Not predicting it, just saying it's possible.

It’s possible, but the competition for spots is going to be much tougher than last year. Other than Maye all of them will be in the fight of their life for a spot on the final 53.

I think that says more about the current state of roster depth than anything else. I find it concerning. Oh well. You can only fill so many holes in one offseason I guess.

Based on college reports he improved as a blocker from his time in the SEC to ACC.

He also blocked well as a Patriot. I work under the assumption there is no perfect college prospect and players can improve.
I don't disagree that he can improve and maybe he has to a degree but it was noted as a weakness for him coming out of college.

And I think Mcdaniels wants a guy that can catch and run and not just lead block.

And now he has two years of practice doing that, one at Florida State and last year with the Pats. The guy was a 7th rd pick due to his lack of exp at any one position. Devlin was converted to a FB in the damm arena league and bounced around a couple of PS years before he even go to the pats. My kid was also at brown at that time so we were kind of interested in his career.

Edit. As far as the poll goes, Yeah, I dont think he makes the 53 cut down, but makes the team after 2 or 3 guys get the foxboro flu before the 1st game.

it could also be Lampe or Dippre. only 1 makes the roster.
Dippre surprised me catching the ball
Lampe has almost zero offensive contributions, aside from blocking
they will be fun to watch over the summer.
I usually get out there 2 or 3 times most years
We need a fullback in a Josh Offense, full stop. We could certainly sign a veteran free agent during camp or even later. Or, one of the UDFA's could win the spot. And, yes, the FB needs to be able to play ST's, presumably being the protector for the punt returner.
=========
I'm not at all sure that we need a 3rd TE on the 53. But, for me, that is a different issue from the need for a fullback. One our OT's can be an extra blocker in our jumbo set. The FB might able to be a backup blocking TE. I certainly expect that we would have a TE on the Practice Squad.

I expect that having a 3rd TE on the 53 might be competing with having a 6th WR.

Which people want it both ways? Most posts I have seen say that Maye was an obvious pick, but give credit to Wolf for the pick.

Similarly I have seen Wolf credited for signing Hooper and Gibson.

Saying that, most people I see agree that overall the 2024 draft and FA signings by Wolf were poor, to put it nicely.

With how much we use Hooper and Henry I think you have to have a 3rd TE. I suppose that can be a game day PS squad call up to help us through the initial roster crunch. But 3rd TE is definitely used more than a 6th WR.

but you are under the assumption Lampe can't get stronger?

it's definitely possible, but that's also the advent of the very poor roster Bill left behind, specifically on the OL and QB

Gee Scott is better than J Bell as a back up to Henry/Hooper
