OT: Brock Purdy gets paid

Actually, the talk in SF is that York is getting annoyed with shelling out so much money and nothing to show for it. The 49ers are the biggest underachievers in a very long time. Aiyuk was the latest disaster. They paid Kittle earlier. The pressure is now on Shanahan and Lynch.

The 49ers roster is declining and Purdy had a pretty bad year in tight moments when the offense needed a play to be made. He choked away 5-6 games when he didn't have his full entourage of All Pro players. That should've been a red flag for the organization. I would've waited and see how Purdy does this season before paying him. I'd rather pay more for a sure thing than saving a few bucks on a question mark.
I will raise you. The Cowboys are the biggest underachievers in the last 30 years. America's team. What a joke.

And the real sad part about that is, Jerruh has no SB's to show for it!

okay... but... it is a funny kind of sad
Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy really

Cowboys only Super Bowl contending team was 2007 and maybe 2014. Dak's teams were never contenders. The 49ers had no business losing in 2019 and 2023.

What a country!
Even noodle arms can get obscenely rich.

There's hope for you yet, Mac 'N Cheese.
Greg Maddux proved that a loooong time ago.

People always **** on these QB deals and 99% of the time they end up working out in the end because the cap goes up. Also newsflash, if Maye actually is what we all hope he will be, when his contract is up he's going to demand an insane amount of money.

The Purdy deal isn't even outragous he could of quite easily asked for more, 7th highest paid annually and 2m a year less than Trevor Lawrence won't even look that bad in 12 months likely won't even be in the top 10.

Most people would have Purdy in the 10-15 range of QBs and that's right where he's gonna be 12-24 months into his deal.

There is legit question marks on Purdy, I think the better deal would be something like 3 years, obviously the player wants the long term deal and financial security but even this kid might agree that is better than nothing specially for a Mr irrelevant who lucked out in a stacked roster.

Is there a market for Purdy out of SF? I don't think so.

So I get the 49ers were in a difficult position, they probably can get out of this deal after 3 years but it seems like they are headed nowhere and Purdy reached his peak getting close to win a SB, just like JimmyG in the same organization.
No the problem is that there absolutely will be a team that's desperate enough for a QB to give Purdy what he wants. There's teams like the Saints, Raiders, Jets that all are sort of in no man's land and getting a QB like Purdy solves the most glaring hole they have and then they can sell that they have a guy to build around now.

Watson had a million problems, was not much better than Purdy at the time (if he even was better) and still had a bidding war.

Someone would give Purdy the bag and Purdy is a young dude who hasn't really cashed out in the NFL. He has no incentive to play nice and be team friendly when he can make generational wealth and no matter what happens going forward he is set.

Purdy is a fraud.

He has one of the best RBs in the NFL. A stud TE. 2 good WRs. Great defense and cutting edge OC/HC. Purdy is just good enough to not let go. Like a Romo or Andy Dalton.
If the 49ers win the Super Bowl this season (unlikely) or go far into the playoffs, then they got a great deal. If they miss the playoffs again, this contract will be talked about. Purdy is a fine QB, but he benefits from arguably the best offense mind in the NFL, All Pro RB, All Pro, LT, All Pro TE and good WR's. The defense was also stacked. The roster is slowly deteriorating and Purdy couldn't make plays in crunch times without his All Stars making it easy for him last season.

Yeah it's non factor. The 49'ers were either going to have to pay him or see if they could keep going to the well and finding value on cheap deal QB's which is the least likely option. It's 2025, you can't cheap out on QB's anymore and expect to just have things fall in place.

Look how quickly we went from the class of the NFL to a bottomfeeder without a QB. Look how quickly our divisional rival the Bills went from a joke to the class of the division after getting one.

Purdy's not a world beater, but he's someone who isn't going to cost you games and can be dynamic when he needs to be. You at least need a guy at his level for your team to even have something of a chance.

The biggest key people aren't putting enough stock into is most of the people against it say "wait a year" but the 49ers have the weakest schedule in the NFL and one of the weakest in 10 years, that 53m a year turns into 60m+ a year with a 12 win season and another year of QB/cap inflation.

The Cowboys did that with Dak and probably ended up paying 10m a year more.

No, Trevor Lawernce and Jordan Love forced the Dak deal. Those were market wreckers. Deshaun Watson's guarantees was a market wrecker.

We are lucky Tom Brady didn't play in this era or he'd command $70M per year right now.

We are lucky that Tom Brady won 3 Super Bowls VERY early in his career and was playing more for legacy and was in a position where taking team friendly deals to see how high he could raise his SB total count was more beneficial to his longterm earning potential than taking the biggest deal.

It was a unique situation. If Vinatieri misses two kicks and we are in 2009/10 etc with Brady only having 1 ring a decade into his career and no real prospects of passing Montana and becoming the GOAT, he's playing for max value contracts to set his life up the same way Manning did.

Right now Mahomes is the only QB who is really in a position where he can really even chase something like that. And it's obvious because he let the Chiefs sign a 10 year deal with him that everyone knew was going to be a huge bargain longterm. Purdy certainly isn't in that position. He's like Tatum with the Celtics. You are hoping he's going to put it all together and have the right breaks to get you a ring once or if you are fortunate twice so everyone in the org can get paid and have a big victory. So he's going to need to be compensated for that.

the 49'ers just paid the Homeless Man's Joe Montana about twice what they should have

I think they paid too much and for too long. He really came back to earth when they lost a few of their dominating weapons on O last year (especially McCaffrey) and he became pretty average. A guy like Mahomes or Brady could take average talent on O and make it work and win championships….and Brady was always underpaid! Oh well, good for Brock!

I did the math on his guaranteed money and it's 36 million over 5 years. Don't know the terms but it seems very reasonable.
