What are you expecting from Drake Maye in Y2?

Obviously, about 4-5 of his INT’s last season were flukes, but I would like to see him cut down on those. I’d also like to see if some of those decisions may have come from Maye thinking he had to play hero ball since the entire offense besides him was atrocious. He will have much better support this year, so I expect him to ball out. Hell, he was relatively amazing last season with garbage around him. I expect something along the lines of:

-4,100-4,600 Passing yards
-67-70% completion %
-8-8.6 YPA
-28-40 Total TDs
-400-750 Rush yards
-10-11 wins

That's a good point imagine a better Pop Douglas - Rham and H Henry add in Diggs - Henderson and Kyle Williams. Can we say options.

Yep. Also, the support/play-calling from McDaniels; particularly in critical moments (3rd down, RZ, 4th Q etc..). Maye was surprisingly efficient in the 2-minute drill last season, so he should theoretically be even better. Lastly, I hope he’s been working on his slide so he can avoid concussions. Best ability is availability.

I expect a lot more big plays, 28 + touchdowns maybe 10 interceptions with over 4000 yards passing.

With Henderson taking some of the load, I just want him to manage the game and take over when he needs to take over and seal some wins without throwing game ending interceptions. Gaining experience and a better o-line plus better receivers will help with that.

McDaniels scheme is predicated on Blocking to help the Protections...Rarely is anyone deficient left on an Island. We saw budding Hofer's Lowe and Jacobs left on a Island consistently last year. It's a miracle Maye wasn't carted off.

Marrone is going to have all of those guys ready to play, too. I haven't been this confident on the line since Scar was here.

Still no elite wr talent so i don’t expect anything bigger than modest #s. Similar to mac’s rookie year but hopefully better. Id Like to see the defense and run game with improved OL lessen the load on him and lead to less turnovers. A situation like last year is a breeding ground for qb turnovers, ESPECIALLY a rookie

Their defense on paper could be the best in the division. If they can duplicate the ground game of 2021, it will help Maye out tremendously. Diggs regaining prior form would be icing on the cake.

Less hero ball. Protecting the ball better to cut down on the strip sacks. I'd like to see a humming RPO offense with an improved team around him.

Also slide better to protect himself. The last thing we need is for him to get Tua'ed and last season was a step in the wrong direction.

Yeah, I think that sounds right. But work to Maye's strengths more than Mac's... um... you know.

For context Tom was like that early in his career as well. For a young QB, ball security (throwing and holding) takes a lot of work.

If he can make that once every 60 snaps that'll go a long way to winning a helluva lot more ballgames.

I think they have the defense to keep them in games even when they aren't scoring a ton of points. Maye doesn't need to take chances like last year. He needs to trust the defense and the coaches will do their jobs.

That might be the hardest part...trust his teammates.

With the new players around him and better coaching it still may be a tough year for him having to learn another offense early in his career, its almost like rookie year #2. I do think there will be some established comfort as he does have a season under his belt. My biggest hopes for him is to protect himself and the ball. He doesn't need to try to carry the team on his shoulders. He needs to take what the defense gives him and sometimes just throw the ball away instead of forcing a bad decision. His success this year will largely fall on Josh and how he teaches Drake and how much they put on his plate. This offense needs to be balanced and find success running early and often as well as having a decent amount of high percentage passing options. We dont have TB12 who could throw the ball 50 times a game because we cant get the run game going. Everyone needs to step up and give Drake the help and support he needs and when that happens I think he will evolve into our next long term QB.

The difference between year 1 and 2 is he knows what to expect in terms of work load and he has improved coaching support

The Eagles and Ravens laid the blueprint for teams. This era of NFL teams aren't built to stop the run like they were 20+ years ago. The Chiefs defense was so worried about the Eagles running game, they kept selling out leaving their WR's wide open all over the field. The problem was when teams put points on the Pats early and stopped their ground game. Mac and the Pats offense wasn't capable of getting into shootouts.

Good point about the turnovers... Josh will help with that... As for fumbles that's on Maye to improve upon

I would need to go back and confirm but of his 9 fumbles I think 7 of them came when he was running/scrambling. It's him no question but maybe Tony Dews can help him there.

The INTs should go down. Better protection. Better receivers. Better coaching. More patient and controlled in his reads. Better accuracy. Better decisions, etc.

The strip sacks/fumbles bothered me about Maye more than the INT's.

I still wonder if DC's noticed on game tape that Maye doesn't protect the ball well when he's running and they are attacking that weakness and creating fumbles. Hopefully with real NFL coaching for the first time in his career they can help him fix the cause.

i didn't look at the fumbles, so i will take your word on that...

as for the ints, even if he stays level on total ints, thats still a win when its spread across a 17 game stretch vs the ten he had last year...

@Ian think we could add fumbles to the stat sheet for the qbs, running backs and receivers? I didn't notice they were not there until @RobertWeathers pointed out the number of fumbles Maye had

Yep he had 9 fumbles and lost 5 so technically he had 15 turnovers last year in 680 or so snaps.

I'd like to see him be quicker to recognize something like this and go somewhere else with the ball. This was the lateral that Stevenson missed and caused a Bills TD recovery in the EZ. And the play was blown up even if it was caught.




That will come with time hopefully .
