How many of us agree with this plan?
1) Draft Hunter or Carter if he is available.
2) If not, trade down a few spots or more, once or twice.
3) Draft a LT in the first round, even it takes trading a couple of picks to move back into the first.

On the trade down part. It depends on how close the Patriots have the LT’s graded
If one is above the rest then pick him at 4
If 3 or 4 are closely graded. Then move down and get a LT

Depends on if they have another guy rated worthy of that pick. There may be. If they don't, then yeah, see about trading partners.
I do notice that the language we often use around here infers that the Pats can just choose to trade down if they wish. Tango alone is tough.

The question is and has always been what kind of trade down is available if Hunter and Carter are gone? There's a real chance that nobody values the QB's enough to spend enough to make a trade down worth it OR we have to trade pretty far down to get an extra 2nd to make the pick worth it which could put us at risk of missing out on guys we thought we would for sure have a chance at.

Right now it seems like the Saints at 9 are the favorites to land Sanders. That means you could be talking outside the top 15 to find someone who is willing to make a jump for Sanders and even then I can't see someone paying the traditional value of 15 to 4 for a QB like Sanders.

It's not just Sanders or a QB that a team might want to trade up for - e.g. is there someone the Bears want like Warren or maybe Membou? They're at 10 and have two 2nd rounders.

Is Carter a better OLB, or Hunter a better WR than Jeanty is a RB or Graham is a DT or Membou is an OT?

I don’t think so, people get infatuated with predraft rankings according to Kiper or media “experts” or think these are definitive.

Carter and Hunter aren’t definitively that much better than the players in that top 5 orbit.

This is like some other guy starting a thread stating there are only two blue chip players in this draft class…. garbage. Based on what?

Even if Carter and Hunter are there at 4, trading back or taking someone else entirely is reasonable. Carter might have a bum foot, Hunter looks like Devonta Smith, great player… but he’s not Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson.

Don’t believe the hype…

BB has left. They are not trading down.

The talent Floor of this team is so low, combined with the sucking chest wound they have at LT, taking Hunter/Carter is a luxury they can't afford. Use the value you have with the 4th pick to increase the talent level of the team.

Hope that one of H/C IS there so they can get some good value on a trade down or two, get extra picks in the second round. Draft the LT that you want in the middle of the first round before the run on tackles start.
Then follow your board and get more good player in the second and third rounds.
Moving up is not guaranteed, they can't f@#$ around hoping to move up, only to get shut out and miss on an OT. Or waste valuable picks moving up to get one.

The talent level is low so they can’t afford the luxury of taking one of the best talents? That makes no sense. You have it backwards. Their talent level is so low that they can’t afford to pass on best players available for the sake of filling a certain position.

After QB, WR and Pass Rushers are the highest paid positions in the NFL.

So it's not a matter of whether Membou is as talented at RT as Carter is at rushing the passer, it's the value of the position itself.

I've been advocating for a similar plan for a while now.

If we come out of the first round with 1 of Hunter/Carter and one of Simmons/Conerly Jr, I think that's a super solid start to the draft.

Team down all the way!

I think that's reasonable. There are other reasonable scenarios, of course - "Take the best potential LT at 4" would be another. Then there's "take the best player available," but that raises the question, "According to whom?" and ""What about the O-line?" because we know the best player available ain't gonna be an O-lineman. Maybe your suggestion is sort of a "take the best player available" move, which is fine.

I actually think it is more important that they get "solid contributor" types further down the draft. Our starters are poor at many positions, but our depth is also lacking. I suppose this might argie for the trade down scenario, which would net you more picks further down the draft, presumably. It doesn't help, of course, that they have foolishly created additional needs at (backup?) center and at backup QB for essentially negligible return, if - net - any return at all.

As long as the guy at 4 - and most of the draftees further down - aren't busts, I won't squawk too much. The draft is a crapshoot under the best of circumstance: when it's a strong draft and you have guys deciding what player to draft whom you know for sure to be competent at it. I don't think we can say that about Wolf, for example, and Wolf will definitely have a significant role on selecting draftees later in the draft. The other factor is that the roster is so bad that even the very best decisions at 4 and down the line are not going to transform the team into one genuinely competitive re the post season. Rebuilding this mess will take a couple of years anyway. I just want them to make progress, and I hope they ignore fanboy needs for shiny objects - "proven players" (i.e. players about to decline or already on the downslide) who won't be worth a damn when the team will finally be in a position to make effective use of them.
