Patriots Player Departure BREAKING: Joe Milton traded to Dallas

Rookie HC feeling the heat of a 4-game losing streak. It was easy to see a move coming. I figured he’d wait until November to make the switch. I doubt it that fan pressure was the main reason for it but if it was then that just goes to show Mayo wasn’t cut out for the job. Based on training camp and preseason Maye should’ve started since Week 1 but that’s another story, and I at least get why the Pats didn’t want to toss Maye into the fire right away.
I remember Jonathan Jones saying guys felt like they never had a real coaching advantage but how mayo was a great guy still. But yeah.. we have a great HC now and I applaud the organization for making a bold move on from mayo.

I agree and I only wish Kraft hadn’t committed to Mayo from the start. I wanted us to hire Vrabel last year. Better late than never.

Thing some people are overlooking with Milton is his age. This isn’t some really young developmental prospect with lots of projectable growth potential. This is a 6-year college QB going into his age 25 season, an age where many NFL QBs would be going into their 3rd-4th season in the league.

Milton was blocked by a better, more talented QB here in New England. He’ll be 28 by the time he hits free agency. There’s not much of a market for unproven 28-year-old QBs in the NFL. He went into business for himself and forced his way out and to the Cowboys, which could turn out to be the best thing for him.
You make perfect points. He is an older QB like penix coming out of college. I personally feel the team did the best thing for Joe and his career by trading him.... as I've mentioned here dak WILL go down again and that will be Milton time to shine.. he's actually from Texas also.

It likely had to go this way I ln order for there to be some significant organizational reaffirming on things. Vrabel is a mix of a hard nose coach who can relate and reach his players.

No. I disagree. As Tony Montana from Scarface would say....Revengay.....Front office and fans was pissed he won the game last year. Wrong guy to blame. All Mayo had to do was call all run plays, he didn't, he gone. My eyes don't lie. That kid showed promise and yes I admit it, it was fun to watch offense . I'm not mad they shipped him, it's the why that's bugging me. Front office, dead silent, Vrabel? Elliot, anything other than it's best for the team...yeah...run that up the flagpole...

There’s a reason Dobbs is in Foxboro backing up Maye in a McDaniels offense and Milton isn’t.

Interesting thing about Milton. He’s not from Texas and has no connection to it other than his mother. He was born and raised in Florida, but he grew up as a Patriots fan. His mother is a Cowboys fan, and that’s where there may be some confusion.

Your absolutely correct from Florida and born in 2000.. from the reporting msde it appear as if he was from Texas.

The team from the experience with Mac and Zappe more than likely wanting to avoid that type of situation... but the difference would be Drake and Milton are actually two good QBs..

I thought it was interesting that Haslem admitted it was a swing and a miss.
I agree 100%. In fact I think “interesting” is an understatement. Haslem’s statement was the sort of thing an owner says in retrospect. I found it amazing that he made the statement while Watson still has 2 full years left on his deal!

Granted we don’t expect him to play this year due to injury and quite honestly I wouldn’t hold my breath that he returns as the starter next year. But still…. it was unusual to see an owner so publicly throw in the towel in a deal which is only 60% completed.
Owners know that there is no way around QB contracts. For a mediocre QB like say Darnold is still going to get upwards of 35 to 40 million.. I believe they will hold onto Watson until they feel like they can get off the contract or find a team desperate enough to take him.
Watson is a hindrance because of his deal. You could offer him for free to anyone who wants him and you would get no takers.
Watson went from top 5 to not even mentioned at all. As a fan it would be nice to see this once great player find his way again.. but between the legal issues and injuries I think Watson is closer to the end of his career than a resurrection.
Agreed. This recent mess makes people forget that he had a couple extraordinary years in Houston.

What a waste.

Yeah, if only we know now who is going to be good in 2-3 years… the draft would be easy.
At the time of the draft pick almost everone on this board was saying pick Lamar and pick Mcconkey

You know that is true. It was true in real time.

But the football genuses say the fans know nothing

Absolutely!! It's very rare for for an owner to publicly state they miscalculated on a player still under contract..I'm sure Ownership likely has had heart to heart convers with Watson and where things stand. He pretty much is damaged goods.. if an athlete cannot properly prepare and train themselves in the offseason they are going to get injured as we've witnessed with him. To bad for him.. I thought for sure he would end up being of the all time great QBs.

Bledsoe was the highest paid QB in the NFL in 2001. That didn’t get him his job back. Bledsoe had already been declining performance wise, and the offense looked better under Brady. Bledsoe’s injury gave Belichick an opportunity to see what he had in Brady, and he saw enough to move forward with him when Bledsoe was healthy enough to return.

Also Brissett was paid $8 million and that’s because he’s an experienced veteran and someone Maye could learn from, but also because he was the meat shield for the beginning of the season. Brissett was here to take a beating while the oline got sorted out. But it never did get sorted and Maye eventually was put in anyway. If Milton showed enough in practice he’d have replaced Brissett at some point as the gameday active backup. It didn’t happen until Week 18, and only because it was the last chance of the season to see what they have in Milton.

I still remember a small number of Pats fans crying about Zappe getting cut because they wanted Maye to begin the season as the third string and have him redshirt the entire season. “He’s gonna get killed out there”. I’m grateful every day that this organization doesn’t react based on what our fans say on these forums because goodness gracious if they did. And I’m including myself because I wanted David Terrell over Richard Seymour like many other Pats fans did at the time. Collectively we know less about what’s right for this team than we want to believe.
Correct. If Bledsoe didn't get hurt he'd be the qb thru the season. It's hearsay to say coach Bill would have made the change midseason. Brady took his shot when he had a chance. Brady was given a second year because they saw some value in his first year. He sat behind All qbs. He got his real chance the next year. My dumb fan point is WHY wouldn't you give Milton a look in 2025? I believe he has matured.
Me personally after watching Brissett lay real eggs out there when Maye got hurt Milton should have gotten a shot in 2025 for the backup position just like Brady got.

Here's what I had hope from Vrabel that he learned from Bill....
  • Focus on Development:
Belichick is known for his ability to identify and develop talent, often bringing out the best in players regardless of where they were drafted.
  • Emphasis on Performance:
His coaching philosophy prioritizes players who perform well and contribute to the team's success, not just their draft position.
  • Value of Undervalued Assets:
Belichick has a reputation for finding and acquiring undervalued players, both through the draft and free agency, and developing them into key contributors.
  • Not Neglecting the Draft:
While he's not solely focused on draft position, he does understand the importance of the draft in building a team, and he has a history of making shrewd draft choices.
  • Training Camp as a Platform:
Training camp is a crucial period for Belichick to evaluate players and determine their potential, regardless of their draft status.

Facts! Imagine if the organization made moves off of us the fan reactions we would have never had the success we did that I'm so grateful for. Drake is important for so many reasons.. he was the only reason for us to watch patriots football on Sundays.. if not for Drake I don't even think the OL would even be ranked 32nd they would be lower if that's possible. He showed potential, promise, leadership and a hunger to want to win. Qualities that can't be coached.

If Drake did get redshirted we are likely still stuck with Mayo.

Bledsoe would've had to really struggle and throw multi pick games for Bill to pull him. And I think by the time Bill made the change, it would've been too late on the season. They wouldn't have made the playoffs had Bledsoe started the entire season.

Good points! I believe Vrabel as we all know loves and respects Bill as he said recently that spoke often. However the difference with Vrabel is he is accomplished and went beyond the BB tree to gain coaching experience.

I feel so confident in Vrabel and McDaniels as they both were HCs elsewhere with championship pedigree they bring to the organization.. unlike last season where AVP admitted he can't even call everything on his play sheet.

I personally think Milton is better than the bums that will be drafted earlier this year, so just a 5th, while having to give a 7th, looks like a large miss to me.
We'll see, Dak always seems to get hurt, so I wouldn't be surprised if he gets some work shortly.
