Player Signing Patriots sign Eagles DT Milton Williams

Felger punching air right now

It was hilarious listening to them start off the show yesterday saying that this was the same old Patriots and they aren't willing to extend themselves and be aggressive in order to land one of the top free agents and then watching them have to almost immediately eat crow when the breaking news about Williams signing with the Pat was announced.
By the end of the show they had twisted themselves into a pretzel to find another another way to put a negative spin on the day by saying that the signings didn't represent a true FA splurge but they met the criteria for a "Patriots splurge".

They are no-nothing clowns. When you're only job is to talk about sports and you have an event like the start of the legal tampering coming up, you would think that they would be professionals and actually do a minimal amount of research about the top guys available. Instead, they had to scramble into a quick web search, in order to be able to say something about him as a player. Of course, the main goal of that was defined something negative to say about the player. One of the things that they highlighted was that Williams was listed as only starting 7 games last year. That told me is that they, not suprisingly, have no clue that other than Carter, who plays about 80% of their defensive snaps, Philadelphia frequently rotates their DTs and that Williams and Davis where DTs 2A and 2B, with most Philly fans stating that Williams was their clear #2 DT last year. Before the Super Bowl, none of those three dotards had ever heard of Williams.

It will be the same situation with the draft. None of them will put any effort into learning about the prospect. They will be content to just have an extremely superficial knowledge of a handful of people that have been linked to the Patriots with their first pick.

Going back to our roots

We won our first Superbowl with an impact defense and a young offense. Trying to trigger the same magic again.

Milton is four and five years younger than each of those players. That certainly factors in. He’s actually 3 months younger than Keion White and just 3 months older than Barmore.

Damn, barmore is younger than white

He left school as a junior, loved the prospect leaving the draft and pounded the table for the Pat’s to draft him. 3rd round now looks like a steal.

See my Avatar.

I'll show myself out now

For as hard as they had to fight to sign him, it’s a win that the 2027 salary doesn’t become guaranteed until 2027. I would have expected it to be like many recent big deals where part of the third year salary becomes fully guaranteed during the second year.

The obvious example is last year’s top DT, Christian Wilkins, whose entire 2026 salary becomes guaranteed later this week.

Here’s the breakdown, per a source with knowledge of the terms:

1. Signing bonus: $24 million.

2. 2025 offseason workout bonus: $300,000.

3. 2025 base salary: $6 million, fully guaranteed.

4. 2025 per-game active roster bonus: up to $1.7 million; $100,000 per game.

5. 2026 offseason workout bonus: $300,000.

6. 2026 base salary: $21 million, fully guaranteed.

7. 2026 per-game active roster bonus: up to $1.7 million total; $100,00 per game.

8. 2027 offseason workout bonus: $450,000.

9. 2027 base salary: $21 million, $12 million of which is guaranteed for injury at signing and becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2027 league year.

10. 2027 per-game active roster bonus: up to $2.55 million total; $150,000 per game.

11. 2028 offseason workout bonus: $450,000.

12. 2028 base salary: $22 million.

13, 2028 per-game active roster bonus: up to $2.55 million total; $150,000 per game.

It works out to a full guarantee at signing of $51 million, with another $12 million in 2027 injury guarantees that flip to full guarantees in 2027.

That amounts to a two-year commitment by the Patriots, with $51 million plus another $3.4 million in per-game roster bonuses and $600,000 in workout bonuses. He can make up to $55 million through 2026.

After that, the Patriots have the option to continue the deal for 2027, and again for 2028. In reality, it’s a two-year deal with a pair of one-year team options.

Actually an exceptionally good contract here. The signing bonus is not that huge, and the 3rd year salary guarantee does not actually trigger until 2027, which means if he does not work out as planned then they can easily move on at the end of the 2026 season and incur just a ~$12M dead money hit. If he DOES work out, the contract is well built to create an extension towards the end.

Finally, if the Patriots want to create cap space in 2026 or 2027, they can easily do so by converting his high salaries into signing bonuses, and tack on a void year or two.

I have to commend Wolf and company for this one. Considering he was one of the top free agents on the market (THE top one depending on who you ask), that's a big win.

Smart for him too. If it's not working out, he's super tradeable in year two, and will be a FA at 27. And if it is, well, he got 55 million.

Boston Sports radio, and sports radio in general is as unprofessional as it gets. It’s all about pissing people off and getting people angry enough to waste their time calling in. They are all douchebags.

Although I would be really surprised to see them take him, I think Vrabel’s defensive philosophy is to put maximum pressure on the QB and get them to throw at their secondary and get as many turnovers as possible. Forgot to finish this. Vrabel could surprise everyone and take Carter if he’s there, to give them the nastiest pass rush they could get.
