What’s our plan at Wide Receiver?

One of the National guys made an interesting point yesterday that the are likely only 5 or 6 guys in the league who fit the definition of what most think of as a “#1 WR”.

So basically, there just aren’t many of those dudes on the planet and you CAN win with a group of solid 2’s/3.

I’ll add a specific player for analysis…MOST NFL people do NOT view DK Metcalf as a true #1.

Let that sink in.
I always felt that terminology was over used and overrated.

Yeah I don’t see him taking what Hopkins did from Baltimore, but I sincerely doubt anyone pays him more than 2/22. I’d do it. Especially if the cap hit in year two is manageable.
He is like having another coach in the room. Dude is very smart and can hopefully help guide the kids aside from weekday he can give on the field.

Playing Hunter at WR and occasionally at FS might be what the Pats are thinking. I had not thought of that. Thanks for mentioning it. Why do I think that?
It just kinda popped in there. 1st thing I thought of are players like DMC and Rod Woodson. If you are smart, cover ground, and can play zone as a CB then you can play zone as a FS.

1. The Pats signed Carlton but passed on the available FSs.
2. It has been suggested that Mapu could play FS, but he has not been great at that.
3. Hunter is great with the ball in front of him, very good at zone coverage which is similar to FS.
4. For running downs Mapu might be better at FS because he is better at tackling.
5. On passing downs Hunter might be a better choice at FS because of his instincts, quickness, speed, and veratility (like you noted).
6. Only playing FS on passing downs would limit Hunter's snaps on defense when he is playing WR on offense.
7. Hunter can play single high FS with Carlton and Gonzo as the outside corners working on islands, or drop into 2-high, or 3-high. Hunter can also drop down to cover the slot or a TE on Zero blitzes.

If the Pats signed a FS in FA, I would doubt they are considering Hunter at safety, but since they didn't I doubt Mapu is our FS on passing downs. Hunter would be a logical choice at FS if the Pats draft him.

The Pats did try to sign Godwin as a WR, so maybe they are not thinking about drafting Hunter and will pick a LT candidate and I am completely wrong - LOL.
My understanding is the NEPs draft philosophy is to take the best player available no matter what. While they were extremely interested in Godwin, I don't think that would have deterred them from drafting Hunter.

I see Mapu as another Chung type that can play CF as long as the play is in front of him. Good vs the run but when he is in man beyond 10yards is an adventure. He has a decent eye for the ball. Hope Vrabel likes him. He did well last year in limited time.

You don’t need a number 1, but you can’t roll with four number 4s, especially with a bad offensive line. Feel bad for Maye if they don’t come up with something.

Call it a WR1, elite WR, deep threat/alpha... it doesnt matter. People are being pedantic with the namings.. we just need a top wideout that can fill the WR1 position on our depth chart and not be out of their.. well.. depth!

Important thread to read. Kupp can help. I'm not saying don't sign him. I'm not saying he wouldn't be best on our team. But in the big picture, he's more of the same of what we have. He isn't really even a quality #2 anymore, he's a #3 type now.

At this point I'll take Cooper, cooks, kupp of course.. just SOMEONE!!
Looked pretty open against us..

This site has different numbers but no question he is not as good at gaining separation from the DB

2024- 1.53 yards (57th amongst WRs)
2023- 1.96
2022- 2.15

Yeah, he had a really great game against us. Now think about how much worse had to be in his other 11 games played for his averages and overall numbers to suck as much as they did with that game vs. us propping them up...
The only knock on Cooper has been health and availability.. his last game played in the divisional he had a solid game. Made clutch plays.. I agree that we sucked on D last season.. the idiotic thinking not to put Gonzo on him was just that.

Now imagine him here under Josh playing with Drake. Even with all you're saying he's a top option in this offense as currently constructed.

Yes your right RW.. he would be a number 1 option here right.. sad state of affairs..

You can point to good games and bright spots but at the end of the day none of the raw numbers or underlying metrics paint that highly of a picture of him anymore as a top threat. You can tout McDaniels and Maye but at the end of the day, he posted those terrible underlying metrics playing under McVay with a good QB in Stafford so, not to slight McDaniels/Maye, most would consider him coming here a DOWNGRADE in offensive coaching and QB play (and that's not to say Maye can't end up better than Stafford, but talking right now). And in LA he had the benefit of slotting behind Puka compared to no such threat here.

In no way shape or form should this team be presented as an upgrade in situation for him, talking about "now imagine him here". It's a step down in situation by pretty much any measure so any weaknesses he had in LA would be exasperated here, not mitigated.

I’m torn on one hand I trust the Rams evaluations.
On the other hand It’s Cooper Kupp.
On the other hand We have Jalyn Polk.

Kupp will not make a material difference in W-L
But he is a “name”
Fans like “names”
We have none on O

It's a question of $$$. I'm guessing we don't sign him.
right, perhaps Kupp wants $5M more from an eastern team.

My guess is that he is talking to teams in the east primarily to drive his ultimate contract value with the west coast team he signs with.
