What’s our plan at Wide Receiver?

After the 2023 season the cupboards were bare.

After the 2024 season the cupboards themselves had been burnt in the fireplace to provide a few minutes of heat, and the copper piping for warm water had been sold to a scrap dealer in order to pay the note due on the lighthouse.

At least now there is a plan that does not resemble scenes from Dr. Zhivago.

I would be super pumped if we got Jakobi back. He may not be a "#1 WR" whatever the hell that is. You can have a great offense with 3-4 good WRs. Is Jerry Jeudy a 1 or Courtland Sutton or JSN? For real I don't know what a #1 WR is because it seems that offenses don't work without having 1 based on all of the #1 talk.

I saw people say that Tee Higgins never had over 75 catches in a season so he is not a number 1. JSN and Amon ra had 100 or more receptions, so they are number 1's? DJ Moore had 98 rec but less than 1K yards so what is he.

all that talk sounds over rated to me.
We just need a guy in here that's going to dictitate coverage. Then that allows for everyone else to have favorable match ups. Look a Buffalo last season.. Coleman was a rookie but Cooper was still a guy that had to be accounted for.

However Buffalo used the RBs primarily cooks in the passing game. Rham and Gibson could really thrive under McDaniels.

Let's be honest AVP knew the OL sucked and the WRs were limited he barely could call plays last season. To your point adding kupp or Nick Westbrook-ikinene allows everyone else to thrive.

There is no big name to be had in FA currently and the draft has a handful of good receivers and Hunter is probably the best of the bunch. There is a good chance you don't get him at #4, so you continue to fill other needs. You bring a guy in like Kupp on a one year deal to have a good possession/leader type receiver. You look to see if you can draft a guy or two that possibly can be developed into something while you continue to try and plug holes all across the roster. You don't get your stud WR#1 (because there is no road leading to one) they become the priority next year when you have an overall better roster than the 2024 team. This rebuild simply cannot be done in one year, just too much needing fixing. You take the best options you can get for overall improvement but there just simply isn't any options right now to go get a #1. If Hunter is at #4 you grab him. I am not a fan of trading draft capital to move up to get him as we need that capital and your selling the farm to get a guy who is better defensive player than an offensive player to potentially fill a need on offense. I would rather pick up guys like Egbuka or Golden further down in the draft.

Hard to go into the draft thinking he will be there at 4..
It’s very possible actually. I think all this speculation of Shedeur Sanders dropping in the first round is a smokescreen. The Browns are absolutely going QB so it comes down to the Titans and Giants, Callahan is coaching for his job and I find it hard to believe he is going to take another year of Will Levis as his starter. Dropping $82 million on LT Dan Moore tells me he wants to protect his rookie QB, and that’s Ward. It’s sounding more and more like Rodgers is going to the Steelers so that just leaves Wilson who even if he goes to the Giants isn’t a long term solution at QB. So if the Titans somehow pass on Ward and take Carter instead, then I can see a world where Sanders falls to them at 3 and they take him. Daboll is also coaching for his job and having a Wilson/Sanders duo at QB insulates him with options for 2025. I have this feeling Carter is getting drafted before Hunter does, so it comes down to whether or not we see 2 out of 3 QB needy teams pass on a QB and I just don’t buy it.

There is no plan.
Waiting for a one to fall from sky into their lap.
There definitely is a plan. Signing secondary players early like Hollins and Spillane, who no-one had on their radar, shows they have been scouting and know the players they want on offense and defense. Again signing Dobbs at QB, who everyone had to look up because they didn't know who he was, shows they have thought through what they wanted to do. Last year there was literally no plan as they signed very few trash FA players and then signed their own in-house free agents.

You are a smart guy so you might try to decipher the plan. That would be helpful and advance the discussions on PatsFans, and would be appreciated by all.

Your very logical. I just don't want us to head into the draft thinking he's going to be there at 4.. is such a gamble.

Vrabel is a smart calculated guy I'm sure he's done his homework. We still need a LT.

I kind of wonder if we have an agreement in principle with 49ers for Aiyuk but we won't pull the trigger until the draft to see if we can come away with Hunter instead.
They are thinking Hunter or LT in the draft. It is not clear which one because we still have huge holes at WR1 and LT.

Agreed. We need a balanced offense. My question is who in FA would you think is better than Lowe at LT.. ??

Could be the pick at #4.

I think a couple veterans will brought in.
If we had a LT, we could expect Hunter at #4. Without signing a FA LT it is hard to decipher their intention.

Hunter would be a great match with Maye, both are super athletic and super smart, and could grow up together in the McD's offense. Kupp, who is super smart and experienced, teaching Hunter and Maye would be ideal.

Yup, that is the unknown. You nailed it. Also they might have a 2 year plan so we can not see clearly yet. Marrone was working with the BC guys all year so he knows what is out there and what to do.

Robinson is not a big enough upgrade to Lowe. They are waiting on T Smith as a stopgap, or J Wills? Maybe a 2nd tier guy as a stopgap but I don't know who, and there would no reason to delay in signing a 2nd tier guy. Still a mystery.

They might know the Giants are taking Sanders. That is all they need to know Hunter is dropping to us.
I think that would be the best case scenario.

The reality is the current options at WR (Kupp, Diggs, etc) are not needle-movers nor long-term solutions.

Getting a rookie WR gives the coach the opportunity to get his head on right from the start of his career.

While the need for LT is critical, if Hunter falls to us and we take him, so be it.

I agree with all that. I also think Kupp might be a great player-coach for Maye and Hunter, all 3 are really smart, to help teach McD's system with on-field translation instructions. Also Kupp is only available later today, so that would explain the wait.

The LT situation is still very curious.

Getting Kupp and drafting Hunter would be awesome.

Yea I think they wanted Staley but when that fell through they went in another direction. Now they just don't want to overpay for average OTs when they already have Lowe. They'll draft a LT for sure.

Breer, who I think has very few sources, is reporting that they want Robinson on a heavily incentive based deal because Robinson is talented but his attitude is like Trent Brown. That would explain why Robinson has not signed. Marrone knows Robinson.

Stanley would have been ideal.

Right. But get Robinson and hope to keep his head on straight long enough to find/develop the LT either this season or the next. Robinson's not the long-term answer.
