Jonathan Allen was released by the Washington Commanders on Friday, ending the standout defensive tackle's time with the team that drafted him after eight seasons.

The move, which was not a surprise, comes less than two weeks since they gave Allen’s camp permission to talk to other teams around the NFL about a potential trade. There was no guaranteed money owed to the 30-year-old veteran going into the final season of his contract, which made him a candidate to be released to save the Commanders roughly $20 million against the salary cap.

Interesting Vet depth piece can't have all Rookies.

I'll take him

He's a mercenary and will go to the highest bidder.

He could be good Barmore insurance/management. Similar players.

What makes you say that?
It’s obvious. He’s played eight seasons, all with the same team that originally drafted him. The team that holds their training camp in his hometown. Sheesh, why can’t you see the obvious mercenary signs?

Two time Pro Bowler.

Durable. Last season he missed nine games with a torn pect but after surgery found it wasn’t as severe as originally thought he came back for the last two regular season games, and all three playoff games. In the six previous years he had missed three games.

I’d take him on a two or three year deal, structured to make it easy to walk away if his performance falls off.

It’s also worth noting what time of player and person Allen is.. By all accounts he was a locker room Ace and a 110% effort anytime he was in the building.

I was over at Reddit reading WAS post about him, and it was an overwhelming consensus that he’s still got gas left in the tank, but not quite enough to warrant the 24 million he was set to earn in 2025. They all want him back on a reduced salary.

From that I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up testing the market and then returning to WAS when they match or come close to matching his best offer. He is a hometown boy. And his hometown team is ascending.
