I guess Tampa had nothing to play for. These last 2 weeks have moved us down. No way we will pick ahead of the Rats.
Maybe now that our pick is a bit further back BB will use it and not trade down.

Thanks Miguel. That's still a good spot, and I won't be shocked if we trade down either.

At least we don't have to hear any more fantasies about us getting Darren McFadden.

I would be happy with him too!
I'm not a betting man but I know somehow we won't take a LB with this pick.

Re: 49ers Won- What pick do we have now?

People are going to say I'm crazy - but I was never that keen on being stuck with a #2 pick that requires we pay a guy who hasn't played ONE down in the NFL the same amount of pay and salary cap as say, Richard Seymour.

For those who simply say - well, we'd just trade out of #2 - there's a lot of other teams who feel exactly the same way about the value that high, given the outrageous salaries those rookies at #2 command.

And ask the 49ers how happy they are to have committed so much salary to one of their recent top picks - namely their QB?

It's not a given we'd be able to trade out of #2. I feel much more comfortable at say, #5 (thinking we could trade down out of that easier than #2) and actually think that something around #8 could be optimum quality and value in the first round.

Yup, what he said.

There might be a LITTLE rationalization here--the #2 would be cool--but at the end of the day, lower down is almost certainly better.

I agree and I think that the market for trades is not what it once was. The other teams have figured this out too.

Re: 49ers Won- What pick do we have now?

As pointed out, we could always pass if we wanted to. So higher is better.

Anyhow, the Browns have to win next week to retain a chance at the playoffs. (The announcers on the Pats game said that the Titans control their own destiny, so I'll assume they got that right.) Let's just hope they can do it.

Re: 49ers Won- What pick do we have now?

Why trade down from 8? If there's an elite player remaining, you take him. If not, then you move down.

Re: 49ers Won- What pick do we have now?

In case everyone here has been asleep, we are *two* SF wins past when we looked like #2. We already lost #2 a while back, so who cares what we thought of it?

Today's win dropped us from #5 to #8, that's the real impact of today. And I would rather have had #5. Now trading down from #8 is easier but gets us much less in return.

Hopefully KC or Baltimore or Oakland lose next week, and that's quite possible. KC plays the Jets, Balt plays a Pittsburgh team I think is locked into their playoff spot, and Oakland faces San Diego who is also locked into their spot.

Edit: not certain, maybe PIT and SD could swap places, but maybe not enough to play full tilt.

The funny thing is ... let's look at how Belichick/Pioli draft.

We know they refuse to draft a player higher than what they believe that player is worth. So i could see them drafting a player ..say at #5 who they like and who is worth the pick. But then they fall to #8 and get a player they like better who is also worth the the #8 pick but not at the #5 pick. That's how they work .. it's messed up and brilliant at the same time.

Higher (ie 2) is always better...You can always trade down, though you might not be able to get what the point value chart says you should.

But as long as SF loses next week, the pick will be no worse than #8. And if you asked me at the beginning of the year if I could sign for 8, I would have.

Also, if the Chiefs beat the Jets (doubt it, but possible) the pick moves up to 7. I think they're the most likely of the current 4 win teams to get a 5th W.

Seems obvious to say, but may actually be false. Unless you are willing to swap, say #2 for #15, which puts you worse off than if you were at #5. The problem is that very high picks cost so much more cap room than just a few spots lower that it takes a team in love with a player available at that spot and with a GM/coach trying to save their job to make the trade up.

Re: 49ers Won- What pick do we have now?

So are we getting Kenny Phillips or Vernon Gholston? :D

If the 49ers win, our pick will be #8. If they lose, it could be #8, 7, 6, or 5. With a 49 loss, the pick will drop one for each team win:

Chiefs
Raiders
Ravens

No - you can't pass. The NFL is very clear on this. If you have #2 and no other team is interested in paying $25 million upfront to a guy with absolutely no NFL experience, you MUST take a player at #2.

As someone else pointed out, sure you can always probably find a taker for FAR less value than a fair trade - but that makes the point that in such a situation we'd be better off with something like 5-8.

Perhaps you have forgotten that the Pats once DID pass multiple times on a draft pick? (They wound up picking David Givens with it.)

Perhaps, separately, you have also forgotten that the NFL doesn't have any actual rules enforcing minimum contracts for players selected at specific points in the draft?
