I'm firmly in the Will Campbell Camp. He's a consensus top player in the draft. The draft experts I trust project him as a plug and play OT, the only one in the draft. The times he's been beat on inside moves is more an issue with footwork than arm length.

Feel free to roll the dice on on Simmons knee if you want.

Oh boy! this thread is going to trigger some folks. Evan Lazar did a mock which had Campbell at 4 which I posted on the main board and it was called "horrific". By no reasonable argument can a virtually consensus top 10 prospect and consensus best OT prospect on a team whose biggest need is an OT be considered a horrific pick.

I voted yes a little reluctantly because I have Graham and Warren ahead of him, but if we don't sign a LT in FA all bets are off. Campbell would be a leader of our OL for years to come. He might never be an elite LT but he could comfortably be at the Solder/Light level and they didn't exactly hinder us now did they?

As for Simmons, I'm out on him now. He's my favourite LT in this draft but I don't want a redshirt guy in the first round.

i a trade down yes but not at 4

I think I’m in the same situation as most everyone else where I expect the 4th pick to produce a transcendent and elite talent. That probably doesn’t exist in this draft, nor is a trade down for a ransom probably going to happen.

With that in mind, I’m ok if they take Cambell at 4 given the huge need on the line, the dearth of true talent there in the draft, and that trading back in to the first to get a later round prospect will take capital that desperately is needed to stock a barren roster.

My hope is for Mason Graham but I see why they’d take Cambell there and would be happy enough with the pick.

I would only want to consider Campbell at #4 if the Patriots failed to sign either Alaric Jackson or Ronnie Stanley 2½ weeks from now.

I'll refrain from comment lol

The Rams have 44 mil in cap space. They need Alaric Jackson. How much do you offer to pry him away in FA based on a limited body of work?

Stanley would be a stop gap. Then what?

Get Alaric Jackson as LT by any means required, then take any other player that can start and make a difference on Day 1. Or, trade down and still get another player that can be a key player for us while we acquire additional picks with the trade down (and still get Alaric Jackson before the draft).

That’s another valid point on that free agency is going to greatly affect needs. With the cap increase, I’m not holding my breath on Stanley or Jackson being available.

Even with the cap increase, the Rams cannot afford to tag Jackson. Their own beat reporters have verified this. And Stanley would only be a 2 to 3 year rental, which is why I'd prefer Jackson. Jackson would solve out LT position for several years.

Is that still true if they trade Kupp and/or Stafford? I’m all for adding Jackson if he’s available and would prefer that over Cambell.

As for the time frame, I’d be ok with Stanley solidifying the immediate need to protect Maye and allowing a developmental draft pick this year to come along.

If the knee is good to go, its Josh Simmons.

If not, I'm fine with Campbell, even if its in the 4 spot. Not concerned with "over drafting" or whatever.

Left tackle is absolutely the biggest need of this team.

Kupp is going anyway. And, if you're Jackson, who will you be protecting? Protecting Maye and getting paid is better than the unknown. And yes, Stanley in the short term (hoping he can stay healthy) but only if they draft his replacement within the next 2 years is not a bad scenario.

My assumption is that we will throw a bag at and overpay one of these FA tackles. If we get Stanley or Jackson I think that might take Campbell off the board. Conversely if we just find a sticking plaster in FA again, Campbell becomes the odds on favourite for our pick at 4. I’m just not convinced we can risk trying to trade up from the early 2nd again

I guess I’m saying we will probably have a good idea of what direction we are going by mid March. This all assumes Campbell measures in with 33 inch arms.

For me the math is simple, at 4 i value carter or Graham more then Campbell. Now say you trade down to 6, 8, or 9 getting campbell and a 2nd round pick? Thats worth more then 1 top player.

We should not draft at #4 based on "the biggest need on this team". We should draft BPA who projects to be an All Pro independent of need.
I think I've been one of the biggest supporters of Campbell on this forum, I followed him closely all year live, have seen every snap he played in his 3 years, and like him a lot as a prospect ... but I totally agree with your point here. They need to use the #4 pick to get the player that will have the biggest possible impact on their performance. As of right now I am not convinced that Will Campbell is that player at #4. I'd prefer a guy who can get to the QB and will require a double team, or a guy that can score TDs from anywhere on the field catching and/or running the ball, or a guy no one wants to throw the ball near for fear of their exceptional interception skills.

Here's a fun thought: what if Hunter, Carter, and Graham go 1-2-3? Then who is likely to be thought of as BPA at 4?

We will know so much more this time next week when the mysterious arm length number figures to be revealed. That goes for all of the prospects of course for all their crucial measurements, but since this thread is about Campbell, that arm length thing will be huge either way. I'm guessing it will be above 33" but not by more than a few fractions - Murphy's Law will apply since at that level there will continue to be a lot of debate I think about him in relation to other prospects.

Phil Perry made note recently that Mykel Williams has a lot of support in the league.

In this scenario where Hunter, Cater, and Graham are gone, I believe the Pats would get a very fair offer for the chance at the first QB off the board.
