2025 Draft: CBs

Jahdae Barron reminds of Brian Branch. I was hoping Belichick would draft him, and he may have, but Detroit got themselves a good and versatile DB.

I like Will Johnson probably more than most people but I wouldn't take him over Hunter or Carter and likely not over Graham either. That's not a knock on him. It's just that the other players are better fit right now, but Johnson will be a pro bowler. No doubt about it.

More Cobee

More Cobee

Thank you for my daily fix.
Cobee is so physical I think he could be right up Vrabel's street. The only downside is that he can be too handsy and physical and can give up penalties. Needs to find the right balance but he's the type of guy who, whilst only 180lbs, will try to layout Derrick Henry.

We have some guys on our Roster who needs some Coaching up ie...Austin - Dial - Pettus and James... we'll see who rise from the ashes.

Not an immediate need assuming Jones resigns but one that we will almost always look to add depth.

The obvious names at the top are a possibility at 4 but I'm more interested in discussing hidden gems that can be found on day 2 and 3.

With that in mind and knowing the new DC likes his players to play with violence. I present Upton Stout Western KY

You mean Jonathan Slow Poke Jones?? He was terrible last year and slow... time to move on from father time Jones. That said a Legitimate #2 CB is a Patriots NEED! Mike Vrabel is mot Fielding a Slow Team.

BJ Mayes can thank the drone operator for this great clip! Also posting this to show Campbell getting beat yet again lol granted the DB coverage allowed for that to unfold. Lastly I'm sharing because he was another Combine Invite snub!

@WaterfallJumper 's favourite Darien Porter is a strange eval. If you look at his stats, he's a potential shut down corner. Across the whole 2024 season he was only targeted 17 times and only gave up 5 receptions for 70 yards and has as many INTs/PBUs as receptions. He's 6'4", has 33" arms and runs in the 4.3s. Let's face it, he's the perfect Pete Carroll CB.

But here's why he's a difficult eval. Prior to 2024, he only had 269 defensive snaps so he's really raw but then comes along in '24 with the ultimate shutdown corner season. So is he the ultimate shut down corner or the guy Iowa State's coaches didn't trust prior to '24? I have two other 'orange' flags. Firstly he'll be 25 by the end of the first season so he's likely a one contract guy. Secondly, his run defense grades are the worst of all CBs.

But I can't get away from the fact that he's a long-armed 6'4" guy who runs in the 4.3s and just put up the best season amongst draft eligible corners in what was an almost literal shut-down role. I'm definitely intrigued at having him opposite Gonzalez. Perhaps not 38 intrigued, but I do think he has a case to be BPA at 69.

By the way, here's evidence of his speed.

And evidence of how he reads the game

I've pegged 1 of those 2 picks in round 3 for a landing spot for a DB whether it be Porter or Mukuba. Only way I'm taking one at 38 is if somehow Malaki Starks were to fall.

I think a lot of that will come down to FA. If they sign a starting LT, WR and EDGE I think we could go any direction at 38.

Also, consider Kevin Winston Jr at safety who might just be the best value prospect in this draft. He got injured two games into 2024 so his value is currently suppressed (3rd round) but in 2023 he had the best graded pass and run defence among draftable safeties. With good size too at 6-2, 205lbs, he could have been in the running for a first round pick. Of note, he only has 3 career missed tackles.

His injury was a partially torn ACL but that was back in September so he should be OK by season start.

There are a lot of quality DBs in free agency.

The entire Vikings secondary for example lol

Did they do surgery? Or only rest at first that led to surgery much later?

They did surgery. It was the Cowboys doctor who I believe has a good reputation.
Since it was partially torn maybe it is a faster time to heal than a full tear like Bourne had? Let's hope he shines in camp and challenges Boutte and Baker.

I was going to add Tre Amos to my round 2 target but after watching him more closely he does get a little too handsy for my liking.

Bad history of Uptons with the Pats.
Remember the WBZ “Calling All Sports” sports talk program with him and Bob Lobel? I was a faithful listener as a youngster nearly 45 years ago.
