To be fair, that's an understatement. How many starters did they have on IR?
Not sure if all were starters but they had 13 out for the season leading into week 18 on just the defense.

They weren't a juggernaut before the injuries either.

They played a lot of scrubs like the colts, bears, titans and jags.

They gave up a avg of 22 points for the year, 32 for the last 2 months if the season.

If you just look at their schedule, any reasonable offense they ran into they got destroyed on defense.

They gave up a avg of 12.2 points to the Cardinals, Titans, Jags, Colts, Cowboys and the Bears times 2.

So the injuries do matter as to why their PPG skyrocketed over the last two months. But also their pre injury defense was really low because they did their job against the scum of the league.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't think the Lions defense was anything special. Injury or not.

Barmore is done. The treatment for blood clots is blood thinners, which are dangerous for athletes, especially in a contact sport, because you can bleed to death. A deep bruise turns into life-threatening internal bleeding. That's what Barmore is weighing: retire now with my millions of dollars and enjoy life on the beach and whatever other pleasures I can pursue, or continue to play and risk death. I know which one I'd choose. It's not worth it.

How does this work when you're off thinners? I was under the impression that your blood returns to normal and his risk is removed.

Sounds like a good hire to me, they should have stability at both coordinator positions, and both have a ton of experience. Provided they are healthier the defensive unit should be significantly better than it was in 24’. That alone will lead to 2-3 more wins. If the offense can make a decent improvement then they should be in the hunt for a Wikdcard spot in December. What happens from there is anyone’s guess, but if Vrabel’s team is like Belichick’s were they should be peaking after Thanksgiving.

No they weren't special, average at best and that's all they really needed because that offense could drop 30+ on any team. But anyone who is saying the injuries didn't hurt them down the stretch needs to have their glasses checked out.

Well who said that. Certainly wasn't me.

Do we know he’s still on blood thinners?

Context matters but so do results. They ended the season giving up 32.3 points a game over their last 7 games.

I give Vrabel credit here for going outside the Patriots tree so I'll keep an open mind.
14 defensive players on the IR. Played a few weeks with our one single DL that was on the opening day roster. I know nothing about this guy. But that defense was basically other teams castaway's and practice squad players by the end of the season. Anzalone coming back was huge for them as he brought not just his talent but some stability to the defense.

Lacking details, I assume that he had a return to symptoms after getting off the thinners. Based on the assumption that he needs to remain on thinners for life to avoid clotting, he won't be able to play.

This is one of those, "In Vrabel we trust" hires. Hes been around a while. Never been a DC. In his stops in OAK and MIA before TN the run Ds were passable except for 2016 in MIA.

I'd be curious to hear what Godchaux has to say about him. He was his position coach back in 2017 w/ MIA.

Ok Dr Force we get it: but we are going wait on a Real Doctor's assessment. There is still an outside shot that he returns no Rush.

Yup, a little bit of IVWT thing here. Need a better acronym.

I like the fact that this is not a overly young guy. Experience matters.

It's different than the Vrabel/HC and McDaniels/OC hire in that there isn't an overall positive track record in the role to fall back on. This is more of a speculative hire. That being said, it's someone that Vrabel worked with before and targeted for the role. He's got the qualifications for it. If we didn't hire him, seems like he'd be promoted in DET to replace Glenn so it's not some buddy-buddy hire or anything like that.

If there's one risk that sticks out, he's never called plays on defense before. Vrabel only did that for one year himself as a DC (on a last-ranked defense too) and didn't do that as a head coach. So that's got to be the biggest cause for concern there. But again, Vrabel worked with him and trusts he's ready for that responsibility so it's not out of left field.
