Wide receivers mental cases ???!!! Hold the phone …
AKA Diggs.....people mentioning him as an option, I wouldn't take him for free. Look at how miserable Allen was with him around screaming that he needed the ball. The guy is a selfish diva and a cancer.......no thanks.

Last time we signed an under the radar niner receiver it was Kendrick Bourne. That did not work out so well.

How about an on the radar top tier WR

There are no tier 1 receivers available that aren’t hitting the 30 wall. I would stay away from guys like Cooper and Diggs, and Godwin and Higgins are 2’s. I think trading for Deebo is the best idea, you could get him for a 3rd or 4th, he still has tread on the tires, and he is getting #2 money and his deal will run out and free up 25 million in two years. In the meantime they can continue to draft receivers and hopefully hit on one to replace him that they would have on a 4 year rookie deal.

I wouldn't be so quick to pass on A Cooper he wouldn't break the bank. A nice Three year deal with a Fourth year option. Cooper is very durable unlike Mash unit Deebo Samuel.

Did you see what he did with Josh Allen? He was horrible. I wouldn’t give him a one year deal.

If this is the list of FA based on contract status, it is not quite as bad as it looks. The biggest thing is that the team would not need to give up resources beyond money to bring them onto the team. One teams broken down player can be another teams role player and veteran leader. The other factor is that there will be more players that become available due to salary cap considerations. With shrewd talent evaluation there will be opportunities to fill out roster depth. The disappointing part of this offseason is that the team will have to trade for or draft their elite players because there are not many options in FA.

Agree with you Ivan. I was being tongue in cheek. Teams do not usually fail to resign top tier receivers under 30 which is why the really need to be drafted.
I would take a chance with Elijah Moore or Godwin as a UFA if they could sign either one

its a list of unrestricted, restricted rights and exclusive rights free agents... slowly going down the list, starting with mid tier guys, seeing if there are any which "popped" this past year, that we might be able to target... for guys like that, I am looking for players coming off their first contracts first... anyone over the age of 30 who is not a "1" (think amari cooper type player) is given short shrift for now...

The Playoffs ain't over and I have the Bills going to the SB. Also he had Pat Surtain on him all Game the Best CB in the AFC: yeah way better than Gonzo.

I agree Sam. There are two problems with Godwin. The first is injury, where he’s had an ACL two seasons ago, and was hurt again this season. The second is that he’s another slot receiver, and they are set there. They need guys who can stretch the field wide and deep, and open up everything underneath. Higgins fits that bill, but 30 million plus is too much for him.

Playoffs or not PF2 Cooper hit the wall this season. He’s the right type of receiver, just not the right guy.

No its not. Its the reality of the modern day NFL. That's what top talent receivers are making... Higgins was tagged last season, made $21,816,000... the second go round on the tag, hes entitled to a 120% raise... his starting point will be $26,179,200... add to that the "tax" for playing on a ****ty team, then you are looking at 30m a season

If we want to bring in a big ticket free agent, that's the going price...

Pape, we are going to have to agree to disagree on this. 30 million plus is what you pay Lamb, Jefferson, and Chase, not what you pay Higgins. He’s never had more than 76 receptions in a season, despite playing with a great QB and never facing double coverage.

I would rather trade for Deebo and Draft Egbuka.

It comes down to whether or not they want to pay top of market price for anyone at any position. Under Bill, they didn't. My guess is that they (Vrabel) won't for Higgins, either. Bill paid top of market for corners to take away teams #1 WR, but he never paid top of market for wideouts, and when they wanted more money they were either shipped out or not signed.

Vrabel outlines what type of player he wants at that position:
“Receivers that have great catch radius, that can create separation, that are good against contested catches,” Vrabel said. “Because when you’re contested and PBUs go up in the air, then they get intercepted, right? And then that now that leads to turnovers, which then changes field position and all these things.”
So, who is that? Who is going to fit that mold, be team first, and be mature enough to be held accountable? Not many guys will fit that right out of college, and not many will fit that who are at that position who play in the league currently.

No one wanted to play for the Pats last year, I don't think the team need to pay the **** tax this year. With Maye the Pats were considered to be a desirable destination for the HC search. Adding a coach players want to play for puts the team in position for players looking to be part of building something.

the reek of desperate wafts out of the receivers room at Gillette, much like the smell of sausage & peppers permeates Lansdowne Street during the baseball season... we will be paying the "tax" if our goal is to land one premium wr free agent that is Tee Higgins...

im taking a wait and see on this... I think we need to upgrade to position... the quickest way is thru free agency... but im not sold on the idea that Mr Kraft will fork over a huge signing bonus for that honor

Ivan, i'm not dying on the "We Must Sign Tee Higgins Hill" ... just pointing out that big time receivers do in fact get 30m a year... and It will not shock me if he does get that much, or at least very close to it, this year...

You're not going to be able to sign too many high impact free agents with this attitude. I've seen your posts across threads and you're looking at "overpaying" as a roster-wide concept but each free agent is a one-off. You're correct that if you just overpay across the whole roster you'll eventually be mired in mediocrity. But each individual free agent will have their own market. Teams who are making up for lost value at other positions and/or have a specific weakness they need addressed will be willing to overpay for a player in an isolated situation. So if you want to land any of the higher impact free agents you're going to need to step up to the plate at that contract level. The key is to be selective and only do it on a limited basis where it makes sense.

IMO, I'd limit myself to paying top of the market prices for two situations:

1) when the player is worth it, obviously
2) isolated cases where having a higher end (even if not true tier 1) player at a spot has a positive effect on the rest of the roster

I believe Higgins would fall into #2 category there. Is he a true top tier #1 receiver? Probably not. But I believe he's GOOD ENOUGH that he will add a respectable top threat so the #2s can be the #2s and the #3s be the #3s and so on. It will help keep coverages more honest which can help reduce pressure on the OL because defenses can't be as free up front and it make the reads easier for Maye and help his development. Right now we lack any semblance of a #1 WR but even a lower end #1 WR would have a positive pervasive impact on the development of the rest of the offensive unit.

Because of how much teams prioritize the WR unit now, even a player of Higgins' caliber is rare to hit the open market without age or injury concerns. In the rare event they ever do come available, it's usually via trade for significant draft capital. IMO it would be worth it because of how it jump starts the development of the rest of the offense.

That is the scent of opportunity that you are enjoying, LOL.

I bet he's going to break the record for WR if he hits the open market. I don't think he's better than Jefferson or CeeDee, but the market will dictate what he gets, and someone will overpay. The only way he doesn't get north of 30m per year is if he decides to stay in Cincy.
