I think it did deteriorate.

Even though he was bashed for keeping DMC longer than he had to that was the main reason he kept him around.

Having an alpha dog like Brady who reinforces Bill's message for almost 20 years is a big part of why we didn't have the issues for so long. Think about any job you have had. If the CEO's message about where the company is going, what it will take to get there, and where you fit into the picture is reinforced by a great boss and great co-workers, and you see the success year in year out, you believe in it. On the other hand, you have a CEO delivering a message, but it is reinforced by bosses and coworkers who aren't very good at their jobs then the company as a whole starts to fail, and you figure, “What am I doing here?”

There were a lot of rumors that the 2017 Super Bowl did a lot to kinda kill the lockerroom with some people. Most notably Brady and Gronk sort of checked out and weren't happy. The defensive guys sort of stayed in line, but they didn't have the same level of credibility as wen Tom Brady is your advocate.

When the head coach does not have key leadership qualities that inspire his players and no alpha dogs in the locker room willing to take charge, you have the 2024 Patriots team disaster. That is why I hope whoever the next coach is tries to bring in a few credible vets who can help set an example and take charge of the locker room.

I can tell you Jacoby Brissett is NOT one of those. He threw his entire offense under the bus to the media by saying "Look what I had to work with". I hope he is gone from this team along with Tavai and Keion White.

Early on, it was McGinest, Bruschi, Law, Vrabel... Later it was Brady, McCourty, and Slate. Brady didn't walk in here as the alpha.

I think it was more like a slow erosion. The old guard retired, Bill tried to keep the last vestiges of the culture in the locker room, but it seemed to me that the younger guys weren't listening to the old bucks (Slate, McCourty). All that's gone now. Gotta start all over.

To your point, the old guard never would have put up with Mac turning palms up to the coaching staff mid-game. Just as we see Tavai mouthing off, and White free lancing. That would have been reeled in quickly. I had hopes for a guy like Judon to pick up the mantle, but he didn't buy in, and shot his way out of town. Looking back, that was probably the first sign that Mayo wasn't garnering respect like he should.

I expect him to not show up the staff on TV and in front of 60k in the building. That's what meeting rooms are for and it's 100% unprofessional.
