Some thoughts:
- I think Mayo was thrusted into the position too soon. Unfortunately, Belichick imploding sped up the process. I assume the Kraft were expecting this transition several years down the road so Mayo would be more prepared for the challenges of a head coach with a coaching staff already in place with Belichick retiring.
- Not crazy about hiring Vrabel. It seems like a forgone conclusion. Don't hate it, but would rather have an offensive coach.
- Vrabel will need to hire an innovative OC who he can trust, but can transform this offense. I love Josh McDaniels, but he ain't that guy. I do not want to go backwards. Vrabel did favor the Shanahan offense in Tennessee over the Patriots' offense. So that is a plus. Maybe Nick Caley now that he has had several years coaching under McVay. Not sure how good he is at this point.
- The Krafts need to allow Vrabel to have his own GM. Someone who Vrabel can work with. Wolf doesn't have to be fired, but someone needs to be above him. The GM and head coach need to be of one mind.
- If they fire Wolf, it won't be until after the draft. They may hire someone above him before that, but they need someone in house to run things.
- The Patriots lack of spending on new talent in free agency (they spent a lot on their own talent) might have been because they weren't 100% sold on Mayo and they wanted to not build a team in Mayo's vision only to have a bunch of high price free agents who do not fit the new scheme.
- I know people hate Mayo, but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for him and what he did as a player. I wish him the best and hope becomes a good head coach some day.
