Schefter on ESPN says Mayo “leaning towards” fired

Important point: It's not merely that the team is 3-13 for why Mayo should be fired after 1 year.
Many first year HC's lose badly.
But - it's the absolute regression in MANY areas on and off the field that shows that this was a mistake.
#1 on the list - the very good (not great) defense, that became a bad (not terrible) one overnight.
When your young inexperienced HC is supposed to be a defensive expert - that is an abject failure.

You can blame the position coaches (DC, WR, DL, OL) - but Mayo was hands off the whole year. He didn't know how to coach coaches.
And the ultimate fact is - he doesn't know how. Some corporate seminar in the off season won't teach that.

Schefter is right more times in a single day of reporting insider stuff than Mort was in his whole career.
Fake Schefter twitter accounts were more accurate the Mort. But ya usually when Schefter says something it's what he's heard and usually turns out true. But Schefter could have heard that and than the team beats the bildos backups today 21-0 or something who knows how the mood will shift with Kraft

If he's gone we better not just give Vrabel the job, i don't mean i'm against Vrabel being hired i'm meaning i want them to conduct an open and through interview process and if Vrabel is the best candidate after that then give it to him.

Someone could blow them away with his vision.

We need to get out of just constantly being obsessed with Patriot ties business.

I think it’s a culmination of several things.

1. tavai’s comments proving this culture needs to be flushed
2. Resulting fan anger which will be shown today (along with a lot of empty seats)
3. Vrabel interviewing with the Jets pushing Kraft
4. Reporting from Russini that the Pats job is actually most desired by candidates

Fortunately the Jets have that big old a-hole albatross Aaron Rodgers hanging over the head over any potential coaching hire. Their smartest move would be to release him today.

Somehow I doubt the booing and empty seats will help Mayo’s cause any. And if he gets fired I expect a lengthy press conference from Mayo explaining how it was everyones fault but his.

They have to do a search, since no succession clause in any contract. It's whether they do a serious search or do it to placate. I find it hard to believe that Kraft world fire Mayo for anyone other than Vrabel, he sems to like those he knows. I'm Ben Johnson all the way but Vrabel is better than Mayo, even if I don't love Vrabel, he's an upgrade for sure.

Exactly. I expected a ****ty year. Most of us did.

It's like you said. Players mouthing off. Brain fart coach saying dumb things. ****ty coaching. Lack of discipline. Zero improvement in multiple areas. Regression everywhere but Boutte, Gonzo, HH, Maye and a few others. Christ I could go on and on.

I think the fan base will accept being thrown under the bus by Mayo as his last great act of defiance,

If it means Mayo is gone.

I agree, Vrabel is not in my opinion the future.

This is Kraft still launching weather balloons. Hopefully, he gets an accurate read on which way the wind is blowing.

That's not a search though that's a sham to check boxes.

I mean a real search where you pick the best candidate and you'd be willing to let Vrabel go to the Jets if you think Ben Johnson is a better candidate and you have the courage of your convictions after speaking to everyone, not we're hiring Vrabel lets bring in a few rooney rule guys and some other random to tick boxes, that's just more of what's got the Patriots into trouble in the first place never hiring anyone without ties to the Patriots.

I want a proper interview process and the best candidate to get the job and if that turns out to be Vrabel then that's fine, i don't think we can stay in the insulated Patriots ties business and not looking outside any longer, it doesn't work.

Browns ownership was an issue with BB just as it was for Vrabel with the Titans. Remember that BB had a mediocre stint with the Browns, but managed to beat the Parcells-led Pats in the playoffs. Vrabel also beat the Pats in the playoffs and was ousted due to ownership issues in Tennessee.

There ARE parallels.

Agree they should interview at least 6 to 8 coaches and see if there is a young Belichick or Mcvay kind of mind there.

My dark horse is Joe Brady I love his offense.

Cheering for the opposition is blasphemy. Your team is your team through good and bad. Not a good suggestion.

I agree, that’s why fans rooting for the pick should stay in the parking lot and root for the Bills.
