Pats should hire Steve Spagnuolo as next Head Coach

I used to shop there in Leominster.

Great DC for chiefs for 6 years
Prior NFL head coaching experience with St. Louis
From Massachusetts
Lots of connections with players and coaches throughout league
Makes great in game adjustments
Comes with instant credibility and respect
Wants to be head coach again
Signed an extension after the SB last year so he couldn’t have wanted to be a HC that badly. But I’m sure the Pats could get him if they wanted to trade for him with multiple first round picks including 2025’s to the Chiefs. Not sure if that’s a wise way to use our picks…

He can leave for a promotion without compensation

Meeehh

If we are to change HCs, can we please get an offensive-minded guy? Just to try it once?

He would certainly be an interesting candidate. We'd need a couple pass rushers for his blitz schemes but we need that anyway.

Seems like he's similar to JMcD in that crossing the line from coordinator to HC has been a bridge too far.
Possibly….. but didn’t they say that about Belichick after he got fired in Cleveland & came to the Pats under Bill Parcells ?

Yup. Either we dip into the pool of head coaches with experience but questions as to why it didn't work or we go after another new first time head coach.

I think I'd prefer to try one with previous experience.

If we do go with another first time HC let's make sure he at least has several years of experience at multiple levels (maybe in college or at least multiple years as a position coach followed by multiple as a coordinator).

He's 65 years old and never had a winning season whenever he tried to be a HC. He's a Wade Phillips type. Great coordinator who should just finish out his career putting out killer defenses instead of having everyone remember he can't take the next step.

He's also a guy that is probably closer to retiring than being the coach to lead the next era of the Pats.

I don't think it really matters. People are just snakebitten on Mayo and think his lack of experience is the problem.

The truth is just as many first time HC's work out as guys getting their second chance if not more. The majority of the playoff field this year will be coaches on their first run as a HC. Granted some are guys like Tomlin who got their first chance as HC and have had it for over a decade. But that just goes to show it can work out.

Interesting points.

Given what we just went through with Mayo and looking at Tomlins resume when he got hired I probably would pass on him for us and I'd probably do the same with Ben Johnson so maybe I'm being a little blinded.

I think maybe I'd just prefer someone with a ring or 2.

This is how I would approach this. First I would blow up everything. Wolf is a disaster, the coaching staff may be the worst in the NFL.
The reality is no one knows who the next great HC is because there is no data based formula. The right guy is the right guy because he possesses the skill, commitment, knowledge and temperament to lead a football team. He has to do that in conjunction with a GM who can evaluate talent, and run an operation.
It’s rare that you find both in one person. So they must be compatible and complementary.
Hire the GM first. It should probably be a former player, maybe a former coach. He must have a vision, strong player evaluation skills and the ability to sell free agents on coming here.
Then he should carry out an exhaustive search of HC candidates, mostly coordinators who have done well at their job. Offensive minded college HCs should be included. Find the right man not the right resume.
