Now that I've had time away from the game i can give a bit more perspective. You are never as good as your best game or as bad as your worst. The Patriots just played their worst game of the year BY FAR! Let's keep that in mind. It isn't like they are always this bad. If they were we'd be on our way to 0-17. No one in this game played all that well really and lets give the Chargers come credit. They were on their game that day (outside of a few mistakes).
So no, we are not as bad as we looked that game. Just a bad team that has a lot of work to do that look REALLY bad that day. Nothing about this game changes how i feel about this team anymore than a surprise upset win would have. They need help everywhere. Maye is still the way and overall has been very a very solid 2nd half of his campaign outside of this game.
It will take a very good draft a good FA period and that same thing repeated for them to turn this around at the earliest. We also need to get some bad contracts off our books. We can over spend for some spots. And not for others. The main thing is let's not get desperate in FA and overspend for the wrong players in the wrong spots. That will only make things worse and it is clear this will not be turned around fast anyway.
As for the coaching, no one believes Mayo is the long term answer. Not me, not you, not the Krafts, probably not even Mayo himself. He probably knows he isn't long for this job and his performance hasn't done himself any favors. Not just the on the field stuff, he's made many preventable mistakes with the media and in the locker room. This doesn't mean he's off the team next year though. We can fire mayo and hire another transition guy who won't be much better. Or we can hire a higher potential coach who will want certain promises made who may not be the coach we want during our rebuild. I doubt we get a premier guy to coach this team right now. They know they will be in for a hard year next year and even if they believe in Maye, that won't be enough to get them here very likely. And by believe in Maye i mean believe he can be good. No one has any reason to believe he's the next Mahomes right now. Not a knock on him. Just there isn't proof at this moment, nor should anyone expect there to be given how raw he is and the situation he's in.
To me this game tells me a few things. In FA we need to invest in the OL. Also considering the bad drafts we've had a new GM regime wouldn't be out of line. And as far as coaching, a new OC at the least seems very reasonable, someone whose philosophy matches up with what Maye can do. And also we need to emphasis to coach Maye to get down. He did better after getting his bell rung a bit, but he needs to play like that all the time from now on.
