The reality is that we need to see Polk and Baker get reps opposite real defenses. It is much more important for them to get reps than for us to come close a couple of times or even win one.
We just won't learn much in camps or the pre-season. We'll have another Thornton situation, wondering whether either could be a contributor in Year 2, 3 or even Year 4.

They have both been awful. That's the past. We need to evaluate their future, perhaps even as a #4 or #5 receiver.
In a vacuum I'd agree, it's time for the Pats to run Polk and Baker out there to sink or swim. As a team they have to know whether either of them has enough potential to keep them on the roster. Unfortunately the team doesn't exist in a vacuum and decisions get made for a variety of reasons that aren't neccessarily reasoned, objective or even in the best interests of the organization as a whole. We are in that part of the season where underperforming teams see their various parts making potentially conflicting 'business' decisions based on quite disparate factors and motivations. Can Mayo afford to take a long view and get Polk and Baker in there for some real evaluation or does he need this team to be competitive to save his own bacon? Are other players going to go full tilt and put their own asses at risk in order to help the team evaluate rookies? What about AVP? Is he calling plays with evaluating players in mind or is he thinking he may need to put something positive out there for his next potential gig since he fears he and Covington are toast? That's just casually scratching the surface.
There's a lot of thought processes at play in Foxborough and unlike yours not all of them are going to be objective and unselfish
