Kraft allegedly seeking outside QB guru.

This season the Jest's D went from a top five in points (per drive) and lowest scoring percentage when Saleh was there... now they're ranked 18th and 14th in both. The mostly same defense ended last season 4th in PPD allowed, 2nd in yards, and 8th in forced turnovers.
"Last season"
You don't think coaching or anything matters except who your QB is, it's like talking to a young girl at a Taylor Swift concert with tears in her eyes. Hero worship...

I'm actually a big fan of a talented defense so where's the talent you speak of and why do they suck?

I think TC McCartny has done a fantastic job with Maye.

Maye came out of college with some major flaws. Primarily with his sloppy footwork that led to accuracy issues. AVP, McAdoo & TC McCartny have made big strides in fixing those in the space of a few months. Flaws that his college coaches didn't fix. If we want to can AVP I think McCartney should be high on the list to replace him.

We've seen flashes of acceptable from both coordinators all season. Van Pelt seems to be improving, I liked some plays and series in today's game. He just seemed to run out of plays, and of course blocking broke down.

Covington is just a young coach learning on the fly. We saw this in the past with coordinators Bill hired, even if they didn't hold the title "coordinator." They improved over time. Brian Flores improved quickly, Patricia took longer to improve. But these guys also had Bill standing over them, he could circumnavigate a lot of growing pains... Mayo doesn't have the kind of juice.

It's ridiculous to have drafted the youngest QB in the draft and have three new coaches running the entire thing. Mayo and crew are a concern, Wolf is my biggest. If the coaching is adequate, great talent could make them look better, but great coaching can't make bad talent look good. They could hire their hundredth coach... or hire some offensive linemen.

I agree that Wolf and player selection are the biggest concern, and that we can get by with Covington/Mayo, if they actually learn.

But Van Pelt just doesn't seem to have "it" as an OC, despite any minor improvements.

The Giants are likely going to fire Brian Daboll. He loves Drake, and has a history here.

Would you want to keep improving Van Pelt over him?

Talk about no-brainers.

Coaching matters but not as much as having talented players. Coaches can't win games, only players can do that.

Great coaches get the most out of what they have on their team more often than not and clearly Bill did more often than not. They can only go so far with an untalented team. They can't turn chicken crap into chicken salad. Only getting great players can do that.

The Brady/BB partnership was also unique. Bill was a defensive savant. Brady was one of those once-in-a-lifetime great players who was also an offensive savant. That's why it worked so well.

Maye doesn't need another coach, he needs an offensive line, blocking and a power run game... he has none of those.
He also needs like 3-4 brand spanking new WRs... and a new grocery shopper to find them... and a new position coach to teach them.

He also needs a defense that's smart as it is talented... ours is only talented.
And it's not even that talented either.

The offensive line is abysmal, Rhamondre runs directly into a stone wall and any gain he makes usually an Olympian effort on his part. The pass rush only works occasionally because of play action, which becomes toothless when runs go nowhere because nobody upfront wins matchups. It also fails miserably when they're behind and opponents know they have to pass.

We've become that dumb franchise that can't evaluate their own team, or diagnose real problems.

Agreed.

And I'm afraid Maye is so good, he saves everyone's job.

Yep... That's the exact reason why, as long as Maye finishes each game un-injured, I wouldn't be upset - at all - if they proceeded to lose the rest of their games this season. Perhaps then Thunderdick & Son will be moved to make the truly significant changes this franchise needs, starting with the immediate removal of Ron Wolf's & Al Groh's children from the premises; followed by the former 1-AA wide receiver pretending to be a DEFENSIVE Coordinator; with last and certainly least being the two incompetent buffoons under whom BoneyT once had a great week of practice.

He wasn't an offensive savant until Bill taught him everything he knows.

… And I remind you that the MOST important things a coach has to accomplish is to 1. have the ability to lead your team during adversity. 2 get them to play hard for 4 quarters even through adversity. And 3. produce a competitive team most weeks. and I would content that the Pats have been a LOT more competitive each game than, say, the Cowboys or the Jags. Both of whom had better rosters than the Pats going into the season. I contend Mayo had achieved ALL those things and more, despite mistakes being made that you would expect to see in a very young and inexperienced coaching staff

But there are STILL 7 more games to be played. This is a team that been competitive for vast majority of this season. But it is a team that has not yet "learned" how to win those very close games or not to lose those games at the end. We saw that in most of the 20 years starting in 2001. Lots of close games that we won a great many of when WE made the great play or the OTHER team made the mistakes at the end that we didn't. And while I don't expect this team to suddenly do what the Chiefs have done all season, I DO expect them to show incremental improvement each game. I expect them continue to pl.ay hard even though they know right now they are not making it to the playoffs. And this is going to be very hard when your team is playing out the string when you still have 7 more games to play. THAT will be the mark of good coaching. This season is to grow and develop and wins or loses matter less. BTW I am a charter member of the club that will find us with a high enough draft pick to be able to trade down and still get on of the top 2 OTs, or DE's

Ken, I have tremendous respect for your knowledge and the way you’ve expressed it as perhaps the best contributor on here over the years. But, that said, I disagree with your list of the most important things a coach must do.

Your third point should be first, I would remove “most weeks”, and I think you left out the biggest part of the job: preparing players to play, so they are in the best position to succeed, do their jobs, and win the game.

Coaches need to teach players how to improve, how to develop their individual skills and to meld into a cohesive team. They have to dive into the details of how to play each position, fix and improve technique for each and every player on the roster. Then they need to game plan, get every player on the same page, and then make adjustments on the fly as needed.

To me that’s the biggest part of the coaches’ job. It’s the nuts and bolts of their profession. How they do all that is going to be what gets the team to buy in to their leadership. A coach that’s good at fluffing might get to lead through adversity and get players to play hard at first, but they won’t be able to sustain delivering competitive results and pretty soon the players will see through the superficial image and realize there’s no substance. I’m expecting that will happen soon with Mayo btw.

I’m convinced that what makes coaches like Scarnecchia and Belichick successful isn’t so much their ability to motivate or lead, it’s their ability to teach and make players better. That is the foundation that lets them motivate and lead. Good players recognize it, and want to play for coaches that bring out the best in them. That is the essence of coaching to me: bringing out the best in those you’re coaching. That subsumes the points you listed and encompasses my point about teaching and developing skills.

This is a fantasy football take. How is Tyreek Hill doing with a terrible team around him this season? They had good WR’s to start the season, have two very good TE’s now and RB’s who can catch and run.

They can’t block… it starts there. Without that first and foremost you have nothing.
And it's not even that talented either.
You have trouble differentiating between “talent” and “execution.”

WEEI's morning team completely in the bag for MayoNays, who still denies any such conversations took place... Like how the **** would he know if they did or didn't... Breer meanwhile, to his credit, stands by his story... Wonder if Thunderdick, when asked by him, lied to MayoNays about it, and that's why he's in such strong denial... Oh my...

Nobody knows what this ^ is except you.

Currently Jonnu Smith is a top ten TE in the NFL, remember when you told us he had no talent?

That's because you think the defense was elite.

No I don't remember saying any such thing but I do remember you telling me to show up here after the game when Zappe destroys the Chargers... he got shut out by the worst defense in the league and you were nowhere to be found postgame. Funny how that works eh?

Although to be fair both were Mac Jones fault.... the shutout and you going into hiding. That guy is the worst!

Mac is currently the worst starting QB in football… and you argued he was only bad because of Bill.

Funny what happens when two bozos out of their element are inexplicably put in charge of the most critical year of his development... the result is not so good. Shocker, I know.

Funny what happens when your young owner decides to get into personnel and coaching decisions how quickly things go downhill.

Oh so it was Kraft's fault that Bill brought in his two buddies for no other reason than "FU I'm Bill"

Looks like it's getting desperate out there defending that wall.

It was the wrong choice but saying he did it just an FU is ridiculous. He hired 2 guys that had previously been so good working for him that they were hired to be HCs.
