They reportedly assigned him to cover the perimeter, not a particular player. And that's more or less one side story getting a lot of attention given that they weren't using him to try and shut down guys who were giving them problems, especially after McVay caught on to what they were doing and worked to ensure the offense "stayed away" from him.
I was wondering where Gonzo was on those Kupp and the other WR who's name escapes me plays. Turns out he just wasn't assigned to cover them. That's just bad coaching. No adjustments. Just "the gameplan is the gameplan".

Right. But the whole premise is to take away or limit a teams biggest threat and that is nucua. Double him and lock up cupp with gonzo that would have forced Stafford to 3rd and 4th options.. BB did this all the time especially with ty law and gilly. Guess that aspect didn't translate to covington.

Related to Wolf being incompetent... I have to wait on that.
It seems it is factual that in FA - no one wanted to come here. He tried with a lot of players, and was spurned.

But, this offseason should be better - all because of Maye... Which he & ownership didn't overthink (like BB would have).
And because of that pick, skill players should be more interested in coming here.

But OL is 1st priority. And Defense already needs a re-tool, with a new DC too.
Maye's proving to be a smart, competent player who will absolutely change the landscape this offseason, especially when it comes to attracting skill players. You'll have guys feeling like they can be the one to put him over the top and get this team back to becoming a contender, which was a component lacking last offseason.

Like I've said before, guys want to play where they can put up numbers and have a shot at postseason incentives. Getting paid is great, but they want to have fun and be productive while they're doing it. Moving up to New England is a big ask for most guys, but I think Maye is going to absolutely be the reason why they're able to be much more successful this offseason.

And once they land that first domino, more will follow. They just need to continue to at least have games like yesterday where they were productive and showed signs of life. If they can do that and keep themselves on a slow, upward trajectory, they'll be in good shape.

And where is the HC in this? Why no "Hey, Cov. That's not gonna work." Is Mayo so locked into being the anti-BB that he's willing to do stupid stuff just because BB did smart stuff?

Agreed 100%.. it's inexcusable.. nucua and cupp are good WRs but they aren't on the level of say a Jefferson, hill or chase they are big possession WR'S. Miami limited them last week to 15 points.. 100 plus yards to both players is just piss poor coaching. I'm really disappointed in the defensive coaching week 2 and beyond. I get it we are down some key players but still the guys up front have all been playing enough now to be able to stop the run as well.

The Rams averaged over 4 yards a carry on the ground yesterday.

Seems like Mayo's just going to keep playing that get out of jail free card. The gameplan just arrives as deus ex machina and must be obeyed.

Everyone seems to like playing for Mayo.

OL prospects in the draft are apparently not great. I agree that OL is the #1 problems, but it might prove wisest to take a WR first. Believe me, like any other Pats fan, I am painfully aware of our lousy record in drafting WR's, so I'm not all that committed to taking one, but you have to do something! The draft is such a crap shoot generally, almost weirdly so, given the roomsfull of "experts" who try each year to suss it all out.

My worry for some tme has been that just as the team finally gets the offense sqaured away, the defense will sort of age out to mediocrity. And yep, the DC isn't looking great.

It was more fun rooting for a dynasty featuring two GOATs, but this is interesting too in slightly sick way.

This. Just like brady did for so long he was the allure. Drake has brought this allure back to the NEP.. although I criticized mayo on everything else with the team especially the defense he deserves credit for Maye's development. Higgins is absolutely attainable as Boomer reported today that chase is the high priority in Cincy not Higgins. I've also thrown out ideas of possibilities of trades. We need another veteran all pro level CB as well.

Not yet he isn't.

Thornton is though.
Historically, each new Patriots WR is placed on his own individualized bust schedule. We must be patient. They will all be gone in due time.

There's a Plan, you see.

I supported Mayo and Covington and had high hopes for the defense precisely because they were carryovers from the best defensive football staff in NFL history.

In retrospect, it looks like that defense did well despite them.

And don't tell me it was all Belichick and his acolytes can't carry the same defensive principles and coaching forward, because we have seen people like Saban, Schwartz, Crennel, Flores, etc. have success with it. Patricia was never really a DC anywhere else and he failed as an HC but others have had success.

I think alot of it too is actually drafting these guys thinking they can be game Changers.. I think polk and baker will eventually be contributing players in the offense but it's just not going to happen this season.. get the " guy" at WR and every one else falls in pecking order.

Back in the day players wanted to come to NE to play with Brady and be part of a winning organization that had the reputation of putting players in a position to be successful. Even though players are going to want to play with Maye, the organization needs to improve for the Pats to re-established as a destination.

This.

Polk has had repeated chances and failed plus his athleticism is very disappointing. Wallace never shined and looked overwhelmed. Robinson started multiple times and was repeatedly benched. Baker can't get on the field. Maye and Pettus look great. This looks like another lousy draft.

Okorafor, Takitaki, Hawkins, and Watts are all lousy 2024 FA signings by Wolf.

I am not sure what you see when you say "not a poor job at all". Wolf's 2024 FA signings and draft picks are weak at best.

This draft could be lousy, but it may be due to bad coaching. I always want to give people benefit of the doubt and so far, the bad coaching has outweighed bad plays by players by a severe margin. Yes our OL has looked outmatched a lot but we had Dante for a long time and saw him take late pick OLs and turn them into serviceable OLs. I think our OLs are not getting the coaching that they desperately need.

The worst thing the organization can do is to pour a ton of resources to get players and then give this staff 3 years to figure it out. We could be wasting years of Maye and the other foundation players that we have.

We need to retool the trenches in the offseason, period. Both lines, and even LB's on D.
Guys to keep:
OL - Brown, Onwenu, (backups - Wallace, Robinson, Sow [Andrews likely done])
NEED - LT, LG, C, RT (assume Strange is gone)
DL - White, Barmore, Jennings, Ximines (backups - Ngakoue, Roy, Pharms)
NEED - DE, DT (replace Wise & Godchaux, ADD rookie blue-chip pass rusher DE)
LB - Bentley, Elliss, (backups - Tavai, Mathis)
NEED - WLB (purge all the Taki's, Wilsons, Jacobs, get a game-changing cover LB - turn Dugger + 20lbs into this)
