The first time Kupp got free, I figured it was blown coverage. But that second time, single coverage overage over the top with no deep help? What were they thinking leaving the CB on an island like that?
Our residual Belichick is safeties coach. I wonder what he would have to say about this.

For Mayo it's damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Bill told us that exact same thing plenty of times in just his last few seasons here.

It's all coach speak.
The only difference is I think Bill knew how to go about getting better even if they did not. This group of coaches has no clue on how to get better.

Are the constant one score game losses a byproduct of bad coaching or a roster void of talent?
Lack of talent.

This season is almost identical to last year's when we had Bill coaching. The difference this year is that the O is a little better and the D is a little worse but we're still in a lot of close games.

He's here for 7 years even if they franchise him for 2 years, he won't do that to his own supporting cast detriment, the guy is here long term unless they totally destroy him physically with a terrible team for 7 years,
On the glide path he has shown so far; I don’t think you execute the 5th year option…..at that point you negotiate a 5-year FA deal that keeps him here [for the first 9 yrs of his career] & builds some Brady-like reciprocity for team-friendly long term deals in the career long timeframes.

Mayo just does not look the part and he doesn't act the part. Coaches scared. I find it obnoxious that the team is 3-8 and you don't kick the field goal in the 1st quarter yesterday.

Why is our OL Coach still in the Building?? That's on Him he should have told Mayo to call a TO to fix that **** amateur hour.

Of course, what you're really saying is that a coach needs the proper players to make things work.

Why didn't they call a time out when the Rams ran to the line and ran a quick play on 4 and 1 so they could get set?

We Need Better than Mayo at HC I'm convinced of that. Poor situational awareness: BB was the master of that: guess hands off Mayo wasn't paying attention all those years.

By following BB around like toilet paper stuck to his shoe, Mayo got the reputation as studious. He even imagined himself as such. He's not. He absorbed nothing from Bill. Mayo is an example of the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

@Ian Gonzo was asked to cover multiple WRs and not just stay on one guy. That was a big time coaching mistake by pelligrino and covington.. he should have been on cupp all game and nucua doubled. Embarrassing to give up 100 plus yards to 2 WRs. The secondary is sorely missing peppers

And yet they're on track for the same record or better than last year. Go figure.
I guess we are just earlier in the rebuild than we hoped to be. It sometimes seems we have had to start all over for several years running now. I wish I were more confident that we have a good base in place at this point, but aside from Maye and a couple other players, I'm not so sure that we do. The roster is still historically weak, the jury is very much out on the new coaching team, the GM shows little sign of competence, and ownership lacks, it seems to me, the requisite sense of urgency to get the offense squared away while the defense is still serviceable and while Drake Maye's services can be secured at a bargain basement cost.

Yes, Mayo seems to be indecisive or lost in some nuanced moments of game management. I tend to assume he has more info & experience than me and it just hasn't gone Pats way with a young team, etc... but as an intelligent & immersive football fan since '94, it seems I have more in-game decision logic than Mayo... and that's not good.
Now, can he improve, and grow with these experiences? Yes, and he better quickly.
Because you could easily chalk this loss up to coaching - again.

Mahomes started the game and ended the game yesterday with a pick. I guess by some peoples logic that means he sucks and is probably not ready to start in the NFL.
LOL. Yep. Mahomes is clearly a JAG. Perhaps the Chiefs can trade him straight up for Mac Jones, who seems likely soon to be available.

They reportedly assigned him to cover the perimeter, not a particular player. And that's more or less one side story getting a lot of attention given that they weren't using him to try and shut down guys who were giving them problems, especially after McVay caught on to what they were doing and worked to ensure the offense "stayed away" from him.

I was thinking this today, staying in the top 5 should get you TMac. Sign Higgins, draft TMAc and all set for Maye's rookie contract at wr.

I think you could use the 2nd, extra 3rd and maybe a later pick in 2026 to get back up in the first for a tackle or, if Jeanty falls because he's a rb, I'd do that. Now you have top QB, great receiving group, a top rb or young tackle. Then spend the rest of the draft and money on defense and line. But you are done with skill players for 5 years if you ended up with Jeanty. I doubt that would happen and I'd only do Jeanty if not lineman available and if the trade was not too steep because it is a VERY deep rb class.
20 guys at rb from 2025 draft might make a roster next year. Deepest position in draft, you can get a good one in the 3rd. Jeanty is a great one though.

Offense wins, the top 5 offenses almost always make the playoffs. Start there and "weaponize the offense" and then you have all the money left after Higgins all your picks from round 3 on and then 2026 and 2027 draft to build a better line and defense.

Sign WR Tee Higgins
Sign LT Stanley, Bolles or Jackson
Sign G Trey Smith - elite players rarely reach FA. Might as well take advantage and play him at LG.
Draft WR Tetairoa McMillan - on top of being an elite prospect he’s by all accounts a great teammate. Having Maye’s WR1 for the next decade be a team player would be helpful.

They spend money + draft the best player available in round 1 & they can have a top 5 offense next year.

Related to Wolf being incompetent... I have to wait on that.
It seems it is factual that in FA - no one wanted to come here. He tried with a lot of players, and was spurned.

But, this offseason should be better - all because of Maye... Which he didn't overthink and picked (BB would not have).
And because of that pick, skill players should be more interested in coming here. Even Defensive guys might want to sign on.
Everyone seems to like playing for Mayo.

But OL is 1st priority. And Defense already needs a re-tool, with a new DC too.

My brother I have given up on having hope for the 2024 version of the Patriots they suck everywhere except QB. They beat themselves that is what bad teams do.

Its not as simple as you put. Bill had the knowledge to fix things but it didn't always happen because of the owner, Bill's own stubbornness, the players and maybe other factors we just don't know about. What I can say is I never felt that Bill was deficient in his knowledge of the game and you knew there would be second half adjustments in every game.

Do you feel like this group of coaches and particularly the head coach are on par with most of the league? What have you seen them do in game on the fly that have improved the teams chances to win? They come in with a script and they stick to it no matter what.

They cant get time management right, they make decisions to go for it or kick a field goal that seem head scratching at times. This past week they poorly planned to try to shutdown Kupp/Nacua and the run defense was still poor with Barmore back. They never tried to punish the Rams that was continually blitzing by doing those little dump offs Brady use to do behind the line backers to have them back off. My opinion is this team has little talent on both sides of the ball and the coaching is no better, that's why they are 3-8.
