Even if miscommunication the pass was too high for Pop
I slowed this down from multiple angles, was not too high. He stops, he probably catches it.
Douglas was at the 50 when he turned, the ball was caught at the 49. He was throwing it over the linebacker to a spot, if Douglas stops at the 50 and between defenders and turns, the ball is just above his head.
The DB that picked it would have had to go over his back to make a play.
It was not a perfectly placed 25 yard pass but it was not too high to be caught.

I think you have to pick your poison bc you only have Maye for 3 more years - Kraft May be too ****ing cheap to pick up Mayes 5th year and extend him...so I say all the rules favor the offense so what's your quickest way to 9 wins and playoff contention in the next 3 years? Offense, because you have the QB. I know the defense ****ing sucks, but the experts here have been saying they're elite. All assets and capital should be spent on wide receiver and offensive line.
They are picking up Maye's 5th year and they are signing him long term after that. The take that Kraft is cheap and won't do that is so detached from any reality.

Yes. So he will be very expensive when his rookie deal runs out. If the FO doesn’t put together an adequate supporting cast in the next couple of years he will probably be looking for greener fields elsewhere. They need to turn the corner within the next year, or maybe at the most two years. Can this staff do it?
He's here for 7 years even if they franchise him for 2 years, he won't do that to his own supporting cast detriment, the guy is here long term unless they totally destroy him physically with a terrible team for 7 years,

I do not think Wolf is doing a poor job at all by the way. The rookies look good (I trust Polk will improve) and the in-season moves look fine to me given that this team has so little to deal. (The Peppers, Bentley, Wallace, Strange, Andrews etc absence are not his fault.)

Polk has had repeated chances and failed plus his athleticism is very disappointing. Wallace never shined and looked overwhelmed. Robinson started multiple times and was repeatedly benched. Baker can't get on the field. Maye and Pettus look great. This looks like another lousy draft.

Okorafor, Takitaki, Hawkins, and Watts are all lousy 2024 FA signings by Wolf.

I am not sure what you see when you say "not a poor job at all". Wolf's 2024 FA signings and draft picks are weak at best.

The offensive coaching staff aren’t world beaters but they are fine. Maye is getting better every game and i think AVP is getting better at calling plays. He called a good game yesterday. First time in a while that it looked like a normal offense.

They need playmakers at the skill positions. Right now it’s hard to tell if AVP scheme is really meh or if it’s simply limited by our personnel.

I am much more concerned by Covington. Covington should get fired at the end of the year. Like I said in the game thread, either Mayo takes control of the defense full time or if he wants to keep his CEO role then they need to have an experienced DC in there.
The offense would look much better if the WR would stop dropping passes. Boutte especially was a human drive killer at the start of the game. Maye does seem to get better every game. It is nice to see that Maye has really cut down on running, even if it is because the opposition has made an adjustment.

The defense on the other hand is very concerning. Saw that the Rams adjusted to go away from Gonzo and the Pats did nothing to counter which allowed Krupp and Akue to have big games. That seems so basic that it really casts doubt on the coaching.

This sounds about right to me, though I don't think it really matters precisely how we parse the "blame." Maye said it's something they have to talk about so that in the next similar situation, they will be more likely to be on the same page. That's exactly right, I would say, exactly what you would hope a rookie QB would say.

I don't see any reason to regard this as anything but a learning experience for a rookie qb who has shown every willingness and ability to learn from his playing experience, particularly from his mistakes. Will he eliminate all such mishaps going forward? I doubt it: no QB has yet managed to achieve perfection, and to some extent Drake's willingness to push the envelope on occasion is part of the reason his potential is as great as it so far seems to be. He just needs to refine his judgment as to when such occasions legitimately present themselves, and I see no reason to assume he cannot do so.

It is not surprising that this draft looks and feels like what has happened the last few years. Many of the same people, using the same evaluation criteria, executed this draft. Supposedly Wolf has spent the time since the draft rewriting the draft criteria using new 'language'. I hope it is more than language. Wolf needs to improve the quality of draft picks and learn how to address areas of need to become competitive with good teams.

My concern is that top players over the past several years are gaining more and more leverage over where they end up playing. I see no reason not to assume this trend - in the direction of an NBA-style relationship between teams and players - will continue. If it does so, Maye might choose to resist the Pats' effort to retain him, and such resistance might be much more the norm at that point even than it is now. If this team does not demonstrate a more effective determination to surround him with at least a serviceable set of teammates, I for one won't blame him a bit. I'll blame ownership.

Douglas ran the route but wasn't looking for the ball as he crossed the middle which he should have been doing knowing the Rams were going to blitz. That's both on him and the coaching. Situational football 101.
Thanks.

I don't normally blame coaching for those kind of mistakes. That's on the player. I'm sure that he was taught what to do. And I saw the Lowe penalty the same way. He was warned by the ref multiple times but still went stupid at a crucial time.

That penalty was more on Jordan to me than Lowe. Lowe is aligned fine with Jordan the problem was that Jordan was aligned too far back from Brown.

Yesterday's interception is not an indication of a major flaw in Maye's game. By definition QB's need to take more chances when leading comeback drives, late in the fourth quarter. Sadly, TB12's Patriots career ended on an interception under similar circumstances. In this case communication with the WR was the root cause of the issue, the ball went where he intended it to go. Connecting with the WR's is something that all rookie QB's need to work on. I would be much more concerned if Maye panicked, closed his eyes and tossed the ball up for grabs.

I understand this take is likely to be seen as extreme, but this really is a historically bad roster, led by an incompetent head coach. Extraordinary times, extraordinary measures? I get what you are saying
And yet they're on track for the same record or better than last year. Go figure.

I am at a loss. He absolutely should know that game plans will evolve as the game is played to not make adjustments is very neglectful.
That's the problem. His inexperience only allows him to play checkers when the other coaches are playing chess. I'm no coach but I would have thought they would put Gonzo on Kupp or Nacua and put double coverage on whomever Gonzo wasn't on. Instead they did some entirely different and both receivers had over 100 yards each. This is clearly a coaching failure.

Mahomes started the game and ended the game yesterday with a pick. I guess by some peoples logic that means he sucks and is probably not ready to start in the NFL.

I mostly don't credit coaches when players make plays and I don't criticize coaches when the players screw up. It's on the players.

While watching the Steelers I saw Fields slide too early on a wide-open run that would have ended the game. They ended up making it on the next play but that was incredibly stupid. That's on the player, not the coach.

Now, there are occasions when it's on the coaching. The best example here was when Bill decided that Miami was going to go for a hail mary so he took his fastest player off the field and replaced him with Gronk. Miami instead ran a lateral play and Gronk was the last guy but had no chance.

Football is really a stressful sports I'm 16 years older than Mayo, you wouldn't know it by looking at us. Mayo will look like Father Time at the end of the season: when the Loses pile up poor guy.

Not having gonzo on man coverage on kupp/ puka reeks of intentional sabotage.

Even the one with most common sense would adjust to it. Were we intentionally trying to lose ?

Same old same.....have to do better crap and never does.
For Mayo it's damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Bill told us that exact same thing plenty of times in just his last few seasons here.

It's all coach speak.
