Belichick remarks on Mayo's "soft" comments on Pat McAfee Show - "They're not soft"

Does the fact that Ryland just won the "Special teams player of the month" honor help, hurt, or make no difference to your " BB wasted a 4th(+6th) on a kicker" argument? I can actually see why it wouldn't matter since Ryland is no longer on the Pats and good kickers can be acquired as free agents( see Slye, Joey). Just wondering if this almost meaningless award changes anything? I actually hope Ryland goes on to become the next Vinatieri, but I am not holding my breath
It means that Belichick and his staff were unable to coach Ryland into being a viable NFL kicker that he is showing he is.

I had less of an issue with the Ryland pick than Rohrwasser. That was just stupid.
Especially when Tyler Bass was still on the board. I know Bass has had issues. Wide right. but i thought he was the best prospect. I knew nothing about Rohrwsser until the Pats chose him.

Could be.
Not sure how much impact the coach has on a professional kicker. I think it is mostly on the kicker and his mental strength but I could be wrong. I was never a kicker. I do know that Rohrwasser and Ryland never developed in NE. And neither did Kai Forbath or Younghoe Koo et al when the Patriots signed them. Maybe Judge, Achford, Seely, Obrien, etc, weren't good coaches, but again, I don't know what you do to develop a kicker. I think you either have it or you don't. The coaches I mentions except for Achford all seemed to have good special teams over all. As I mentioned previously, I am glad Slye is the Pats kicker and I would not have wanted to go into this season with Ryland as their kicker, but maybe Ryland needed more time or more likely a new start in a new place.

Very underrated beautiful city. You're missing out.

Last night was glorious up here, 75 degree weather, streets loaded with trick r treaters, neighbors sharing drinks and talking on our front lawns. Beautiful.
Let’s talk weather in three months or so. Check back with thermometer reading, precip rates, and highway conditions in mid February?

The weather argument is overrated since the city is north of the lake. I have pictures of me sitting in dry clear sky sunshine at a table on the sidewalk while 5 feet of snow were dropping in the southtowns because of Lake Effect. Last year we had exactly one day of snow in the city, 4 inches. By comparison, New England has been getting bludgeoned.

Every 10 years the city gets hit. I've been living up here since 2002.

We were hit in October of 2006 and once again in December of 2022.

That's it.

Have a look at Gost and Vinatieri's rookie #s.

I don't think Ryland will ever become that, but...

Vinatieri: 8-14 from 40-49
Gost: 9-14 from 30-49
Ryland: 10-17 from 30-49

I think rookie kickers struggle with the new Pro Ball, the new uprights, etc.

It is all mental when it comes to NFL kickers. Ryland didn't figure things out quickly enough to beat out Slye. Who was awful in his previous attempts with other teams. At this point I wish Ryland good luck and hope that Slye continues to refine his skills.

Now do Mid Dec through Feb.

This is a thread about Bill publicly taking a shot at the Pats. He deserves criticism for that and a few other things. That isn't hate, it's an observation.

SB1 is secretly a Jets fan who has never gotten over the napkin Bill handed in and so he trolls this board hating Bill. So I don't care what the main topic of the thread is SB1 deserves to get called a hater at every turn.

Bill Belichick never started a season 1-6. Even his rookie season.
Since this is the first I heard of this he must have gone 1-5 at some point or you would have posted that already.

Here's something else. Bill had 8 losing seasons out of the 11 he didn't have Brady.

Let's see you put a spin on that.

You must be a Jets fan too

Seems that Team Bill is now trying to talk up their hoodied hero by comparing him with a rookie head coach with 8 games of experience. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

How about this comparison for them to spin: Todd Bowles. Bowles HC record is almost identical to Bill’s .426 record post Brady. Same number of playoff wins without Brady too (1).

Okie dokie. But that shouldn't be true for Pats fans who object to Bill talking **** about the Pats.

I don't participate in the discussion as much as I'd like because I think coaching is way overrated to begin with. But if I'm going to have to hear how great Bill is in every thread then maybe I'll join the fray.

Doesn't 6 Super Bowl wins make RKK the GOAT owner?
Yes, until Bob had the urge to make "The Dynasty" and confirm the long debated rumors that he was going to fire Bill after 2001 had they not made the playoffs. Bob didn't like what Bill was doing, but was willing to watch him potentially crash and burn for playing Brady over Bledsoe. He's that Boss that doubts you and says you're wrong, then tries to take all the credit for your success. He's a turd.

People seem to have forgotten how football teams are built. They are not packed with superstars. They are packed with players who play well and you need depth. Across the board. You can't have weaknesses because weaknesses will be exploited.

I'm saying this because back in 2001, the NFL smart guys (GMs, scouts, media) all declared that the Patriots were the team with the least talent out of anyone.

If you roll that back to 1999 and 2000, one of the refrains was that Pete Carroll was a really good coach who had been saddled with an untalented roster. Bobby Grier was to blame because he was a horrible drafter.

But then you look at that roster and what do you see?

1. A QB who went on to throw for another 15,000 yards in his career.
2. Troy Brown
3. Kevin Faulk
4. Ted Johnson
5. Greg Spires (went to the Pro Bowl with Tampa)
6. Adam Vinatieri
7. Terry Glenn who went on to make another 370 catches in his career, 1 Pro Bowl
8. Ben Coates, though he wasn't part of the Patriots later
9. Damien Woody, made the Pro Bowl with the Patriots
10. Brandon Mitchell, a solid but average player
11. Willie McGinest
12. Tedy Bruschi
13. Lawyer Milloy
14. Ty Law
15. David Givens
16. Roman Phifer
17. Mike Vrabel
18. Matt Light
19. David Patten
20. Richard Seymour
21. Antowain Smith

When this team was losing under Carroll and won only 5 games under Belichick, it was called the most talent deficient roster in football.

Look at all those players. None of them a standout or superstar except for, possibly, maybe, Ty Law.

The point is you can have successful teams when you have great depth, a lot of good players, and people willing to listen and work. You don't need a roster of All-Pros.
I see at least a dozen players on that list that are standouts. One or two might even be in the HOF.

Bill added quite a few FAs in 2001 that worked out great, like Vrabel and Phifer. The Pats also got lucky when Drew got hurt.

Unfortunately, this is two decades later and the rules have been set up to favor the QBs. It's almost to the point now where the best QB wins.
