Belichick remarks on Mayo's "soft" comments on Pat McAfee Show - "They're not soft"

18 runs in a row. Maybe soft wasn’t the best word to use but there’s not much to compliment there either.

Last time something like that happened was 2002 and we all know how Bill felt about that run defense and rightfully so.
18 runs in a row is atrocious, no sugar coating that ! However, that is also due to terrible coaching . Once they had allowed 5or 6 runs, Covington and Mayo should have pulled them aside and coached them like Bill used to always do during games ! Maybe something might have changed and if not then I still blame the coaches. Gonzo was beaten so many times, during Bills tenure he would have changed the line up. Mayo does nothing but stand there !!

I felt like this deserved its own thread. However you might feel about Bill commenting on this, I think it will have repercussions in the locker room.

“I feel bad for those guys”. What a fraud. The Pats suck and Mayo has been a failure thus far but Bill doesn’t give a **** about those guys, hes just pulling on

BB on Maye "He has done some good things: we'll see when things get a little more competitive." BB would have Never Drafted Maye @ #3. Stay on TV Bill it fits you perfectly.

Says the guy who declared Wolf the GM of the year for 2024. LOL. Dude, you are a really nice guy but you know nothing about football.

It’s about time someone said something about the horrible coaching . And whom better than the GOAT coach himself. He is not wrong and Mayo and Kraft started slinging mud at him first. He took the high road which I respected so much. This little dig at Mayo is priceless and I love it. He is right about the facts, some people don’t want to hear it because right now they have to hate Bill. Maybe in a couple of years they will really appreciate him and what he did for this organization for 20 plus years.
Back to the point, the defence is not soft. They are not playing well as a unit and that starts at the top!! Mayo better do something soon, otherwise he will lose the entire locker room and Kraft will have to make a tough decision!
Let’s be clear. This issue isn’t whether the defense is soft, who believe it or doesn’t. The issue in this case isn’t performance.

The issue is their HC got in front of a camera after his team got ***** slapped and said the Xs and Os are fine, those players are soft.
No man who has ever played on a front 7 wouldn’t take being called soft as an insult of his manhood.

Of course he feels bad for them. Belichick is widely known for caring about and being protective of his players.
He isn’t piling on, he’s sticking up for them.

Wow. threw Mayo under the bus.
I think Mayo deserved it. Should not publicly criticize your players
So now Mayo should man up and prove BB wrong. If he doesn’t well . . .

Of course, it’s a bit of BB covering for his . . . mistakes too.

Sure get us that coach back instead of the guy who is .426 post Brady and hired his two buddies out of their element to coach his offense and develop his young QB…
Same guy, everyone is judged in totality.

I expect his assistants like AVP will be sent packing before he is if things don’t get better.
So you think AVP will be sent packing next week?

So you think AVP will be sent packing next week?
The only reason to do that mid-season is if you think you have a better guy in house. If not, may as well let the season play out and look for a new OC in the offseason.

People seem to have forgotten how football teams are built. They are not packed with superstars. They are packed with players who play well and you need depth. Across the board. You can't have weaknesses because weaknesses will be exploited.

I'm saying this because back in 2001, the NFL smart guys (GMs, scouts, media) all declared that the Patriots were the team with the least talent out of anyone.

If you roll that back to 1999 and 2000, one of the refrains was that Pete Carroll was a really good coach who had been saddled with an untalented roster. Bobby Grier was to blame because he was a horrible drafter.

But then you look at that roster and what do you see?

1. A QB who went on to throw for another 15,000 yards in his career.
2. Troy Brown
3. Kevin Faulk
4. Ted Johnson
5. Greg Spires (went to the Pro Bowl with Tampa)
6. Adam Vinatieri
7. Terry Glenn who went on to make another 370 catches in his career, 1 Pro Bowl
8. Ben Coates, though he wasn't part of the Patriots later
9. Damien Woody, made the Pro Bowl with the Patriots
10. Brandon Mitchell, a solid but average player
11. Willie McGinest
12. Tedy Bruschi
13. Lawyer Milloy
14. Ty Law
15. David Givens
16. Roman Phifer
17. Mike Vrabel
18. Matt Light
19. David Patten
20. Richard Seymour
21. Antowain Smith

When this team was losing under Carroll and won only 5 games under Belichick, it was called the most talent deficient roster in football.

Look at all those players. None of them a standout or superstar except for, possibly, maybe, Ty Law.

The point is you can have successful teams when you have great depth, a lot of good players, and people willing to listen and work. You don't need a roster of All-Pros.

Kraft set Mayo up by opening his mouth last week. Bill swatted that thing right back over the net and Mayo took it off the chin.

I wish Bill would have still stayed relatively quiet like he has most of the season with the Pats but something was bound to be said.

I don't like it but it is kind of entertaining in a Felger kind of way.
This is a bad look for Belichick but it's clear by now that he thinks of Mayo the way he thinks of Mangini.

Your right. However still had Willie, teddy b. Ted Washington, Vrabel, Seymour, colvin, phifer, warren, green, Rodney, Eugene Wilson, assante
But this is the thing, none of the players you listed were considered good by anyone except Belichick. Do you not remember what the GMs and scouts said about all these players you listed above (granted Rodney and big Ted were not on the team yet). They called them a roster that is the most lacking in talent in the NFL. We're looking at these guys now for how good they were, but back then, before they became a great team, they were thought of as being horrible.

There are people still commenting on the Patriots who thought Seymour was a horrible pick that year.

Too bad Tommy Devito and Minshew aren't on the schedule this year.... then again the Dolphins who just beat the Pats are worse than both those teams so maybe those aren't guaranteed wins either.
This year's schedule has been so much easier.

Ron Borges posts here?

I wonder if the 47-17 no punt game was soft defense..
I'm not sure why you're bringing that up.

All those guys were old. They are gone. That was the entire point of the rebuild.

I don't think think they were soft so much as they were slow. You can't help being old and slow. They were thrown on.

They lost in the playoffs.

Then they were off the team. All the guys who comprised last year's team were brought in here for the rebuild. Young and fast guys who played last year.

Every time (5 times) he had a pick in the top of the first round, he didn't trade down. Seymour, Warren, Mayo, mac Jones, heck even Solder at 17.

Belichick always traded back why? Because we were picking at the end of the 1st round and all of the first round values were gone.
