This is a hypothetical.

Imagine Kraft hired a coach who in his 5th year won a Super Bowl for the Patriots.

After that, the team futzed around a little bit before they went into a big swoon about 5 years later. In this period, over 3 years that team won as many games as the Patriots won under Belichick in his last 3 years (22).

Also during this period, the coach went 10 years while winning only 1 playoff game.

Does this coach survive the post Super Bowl winning decade if Robert Kraft is the owner?

SB win, but then 1 playoff win over 10 years, a 3 year period w/ 22 wins.

If you say YES, Kraft keeps the coach on, then would you say Belichick was treated differently than this hypothetical coach?
If you say NO, does that mean Kraft is a different kind of owner than several (or many) other NFL owners who stay the course with such coaches?
Or do you believe all owners would fire this coach?

Gee, I wonder who is the real world example being described above….

Is this coach the highest paid coach in the league, 72 years old, and also GM who built the worst roster in the league with a rebuild that will take him into his late 70’s?

I'm a fan. It's not my money, so I don't care.

If Kraft spent more money on Kingsbury, we wouldn't be in this position.

But obviously, no, I'm not talking about the coach who took us to 9 Super Bowls, won 6 of them, and was the DC for us on another SB team in the 90s.

I'm talking about a much much lesser coach.

With players getting sick and blaming the food is it fair to ask if Kraft started serving those Bologna sandwiches again?

It's Tomlin? Or Harbaugh maybe but I think it's Tomlin.

Bill was not the DC in 96.

Bill was not the DC in 96.
He was the assistant head coach who took over the D because of the DCs abysmal performance the prior year. We know very well who controlled that defense because Parcells made Belichick the DC at the Jets when all of them left together and the former DC once again was behind Belichick.

This is why Kraft tried to hire him right after the season.

It is Harbaugh. But Tomlin's tenure is similar.

However Tomlin never suffered a 3 year drought like Harbaugh.

Harbaugh has had more lows than Tomlin, but Tomlin has had 8 seasons winning less than 10 games. Tomlin has had many average seasons, Harbaugh has had better ones. Tomlin hasn't had a losing season, Harbaugh has had a few, including a really putrid one.

If Bill was younger he probably gets a few more years. Which probably goes to show he should have got those years anyway.

Yes, this is what I was thinking. Highly successful, goes through a lull. Same as other coaches around the league that were given leeway. The fact he has such longevity with you would make it seem MORE likely you'd retain him.

Anyway, my early theory sticks, and it's that Kraft hates Belichick because Belichick doesn't kowtow to him and he isn't a nice person.

When you see billionaires react to being mistreated, pay attention.

I've seen Bloomberg, Musk, Kraft and many others react in ways no normal person should to small slights. They exist in a bubble. I think the media is right to highlight Belichick giving the trophy away as soon as Jonathan hands it to him. People will argue that Bill deserves it for treating the Krafts in some way that wasn't totally reverential, or maybe even with disdain. I'm not even going to argue that. But I'm a fan and don't really care that Kraft's feelings were hurt.

And yet they just spent the offseason resigning guys from that terrible roster. Shame on Belichick for not having all-pro 4th stringers!

Doubtful. After a 4-13 season and steady decline in all areas since Brady's departure there's no good reason not to move on no matter his age. A HC job is not a lifetime achievement award.

His age probably has more to do with why he's still unemployed.

So you think our roster last year was good?

Your opinion on all things Belichick is useless anyway as we all know you hate him

So you think our roster last year was good?
It lacked a tackle, a #1 WR and a QB.

But otherwise yes that roster had many of the required parts.

In the NFL, if you have a crap QB, that's worth 5 losses or more right there.

Could Belichick have won with Maye, Marcus Jones and Gonzalez added to last year's group? I believe he'd finish with 9 or 10 wins. The #1 WR and the tackle would take them over the top.

Not really, but for such a **** roster, quite a few of ‘em were re-signed, no? What constitutes a good roster vs a good team? The Cowboys have had one of the better rosters in the league for two decades. How’s that working out for them? The Patriots were starting 4th stringers last year because of all the injuries. Bill had some **** drafts and didn’t replace his coaching staff fast enough after losing so many of them. Who was left after McDaniels left that even knew the system?

That joke of an offensive with Patricia everyone likes to talk about was still middle of the pack in scoring. They missed the playoffs on a botched lateral. They would have made the playoffs if Newton didn’t blow games fumbling the ball in 2020. You guys act like the Pats have been a 2-14 team every year without Brady and that there was no talent on the team. Bill fills his team with guys he thinks he can win with, not with superstars. That’s how he ended up with guys like Welker, Edelman, James White, Thuney, Mason, Andrews, Volmer, etc…

None of this matters as there’s no pleasing some of you people. Even when we had Brady and we’re going to the Conference Championship’s and Super Bowl every other year, you were complaining. You killjoys have been chasing people off this forum for years.
