Would really help this team... Playing from a short field vs being pinned deep on nearly every drive...

Right now I believe we are -1 in turnover differential... Just 3 ints, 4 forced fumbles... So what's with the non-opportunistic defense?
Is it a lack of pass rush / pressure? Not being able to force QB into making risky throws?

Is it using the zone defense as lot? Don't know the percentage breakdown... If you do, let me know in case I'm wr-wr-wr incorrect ... Is it the defensive scheme? The cushions the dbs are giving up? Letting the wrs climb the route tree before engaging the wideouts? Seems to me it's a fairly talented bunch of Reubens in the backfield... We should have more than 3 ints at this point...

We do know the run defense is broken, so was kinda surprised at the four ff... Not expecting too much here... Barmore being out hurts the pass rush... But it's like white is mia lately... Can losing Bentley really have made that much of a difference? He is a good steady player, productive as a tackling machine... but is he really that much of a game changer? We really need to concentrate on stopping the run first...

Anyone have any answers? Seems like the Defense has the talent to turn things around but there's always one or two issues that are grinding the d down... We should be performing better than we are at this point of the year...

It's basic. The pass rush is not good. Secondly, the team is getting run on. Once a D gets run on, they are way way way more easy to pass on and the opponent won't turn the ball over. Turnovers are often the result of offenses getting pressured and one-dimensional. One-dimensional, meaning they aren't able to run the ball, and are under pressure to convert 3rd and long.... that's when your liklihood of an interception or strip sack of the QB happens.

Didn't the Jags run like 18 times in a row on us from the Third Quarter onward?? Unheard of in Todays NFL are we in the Pros or Highschool??

So it's just pressure related?

Could be... So we need to take more risks? Bring the blitz more than once in a blue moon? Ramp up the aggression?

Mayo called the team soft... I'm not so sure that the players are the ones who are soft... Covington should know how to generate pressure... It's one thing he's was able to do moderately successfully over the last few years...

Yes. Embarrassing

I don't think anyone could have seen the defense being this bad. Have to try playing more aggressive

They blitz but they get burned when they do so because it doesn't get home most of the time.

Not just pressure... right now it's more a run D issue as root cause. Hard to fix that short term as it's personnel.

I don’t see any deflections, soft spots in coverage, no pressure, gaps in the run game.

Here's a suggestion tell Mayo to put Fat @ss Onwenu at DT run D solved.

The rumblings from players accusing teammates of "freelancing" and "taking theirs" is getting louder.

That might be a big reason they aren't making plays.

When BB had players doing their own thing he reduced their snaps or traded them.

Let's see what Mayo does.

No playmakers up front besides white. The writing was on the wall when judon was traded after barmore came down with blood clots. In addition to getting barmore back they need to add an impact edge guy next year and upgrade depth over wise/uche who have been nonexistent. It’s possible with the cap space and picking at the top of each round, but the front office has to be very aggressive this time, maybe even sacrificing a 3rd or 4th to trade back into rd 1 with the second pick(really was advocating that this year to get a better wr than polk).

The backend of the defense (other than gonzo and dugger) is full of ‘solid’ guys who will hopefully look better when you have 3 legit disruptors up front. But without a pass rush they won’t hold up or make the play themselves.

What did the defensive players always say when the NEP had a reputation for solid D?

"The coaches put us in situations where we can succeed." For over 20 years you heard that. The defensive players knew what would likely happen before it did.

I haven't seen the coverage being in position very often. Hard to get a turnover when the receivers have separation.

They are NOT doing their jobs.

That's why.

I think Godchaux is right.

People need to really consider the fact that the Patriots did NOT have Judon, Marcus Jones and Gonzalez out there last season, and they looked much better than this, and they caused turnovers.

So you add Marcus Jones and Gonzalez, but you lose Barmore, Peppers and Bentley (and let's face it, we were this bad with Peppers out there), and my conclusion is that the players are not disciplined and not listening to the game plan and what they should be doing.

"Do your job!" sounds like stupid coachspeak, but it really means something other than a simple platitude. It's really about scheming. When Patriot players didn't do their jobs in the past (Adalius Thomas, Jamie Collins, Lawyer Milloy) Belichick sent them away.

Unless you go to an entirely different kind of defense that will make you look like everyone else in the NFL, you need buy-in. And when I look at Dallas with its superstars Parsons, Kendrick, Lawrence, Diggs and Bland, that's not a guaranteed recipe for success either.

the cushions they give up are huge... seems like they are starting 10 yards off the ball... that might be a bit of hyperbole, but its almost like we are in a prevent defense at all times, not focused on stopping the offense, just containing it from getting huge chunk plays... it ain't working.

Free safety weakness? Jaylinn Hawkins problem? We dont trust our safeties.

Kyle Dugger is a strong safety, should be up closer to the line. Not sure about Hawkins.

I think they have been gutted. Barmore, Bentley and Peppers are on the list of best players on the defense. Judon was shipped out. They don't have the depth to replace the top end of the defensive roster. Add to that, we've had multiple players talk about selfish play, assuming that it comes from that side of the ball at this point. Someone or multiple someones is freelancing on D, and it's creating a problem for the other 10 guys on the field. That to me shows a lack of respect of the coaches and the game plan. It's a mess, to your point, none of us saw this level of poor play coming.
