On the first play of the game, they ran for 7 yards, then passed twice and punted. That told you all you needed to know. If you can't pass but you can run, then you run until you can't anymore. That was a continuous theme right to the very end.

you are running at 8, 9, 10 yards a pop... nearly 8 yards for an average... we were on the 12... threatening to score... what do we do? run? **** no... we pass...

that's part of the in game adjustments, part of situational awareness, right? or am I crazy?

well i suppose both could be true...

We have some of the worst offensive talent in the L. Defense is missing some key pieces. We are in a rebuild. I think Mayo gets the benefit of the doubt for a few years.

I was on board with this hire in the beginning, though I had reservations...

The biggest reservation was Mayos lack of experience... He was literally Coaching for 6 seasons before being hired as the Head Coach... Until this year, never called a game, Steve was making the defensive calls... Never coordinated a game... he worked as part of a group who did, but never had that responsibility... He doesn't have the knowledge base to draw a lot from to build a base to work from...

He is too effusive in his dealings with the media... he has continually said things that have been walked back, the two most glaring are "buring some cash" and "Maye out played Brissett"... He has diarrhea of the mouth... tries to hard it seems... It is okay to not answer every single question thrown his way...

The product on the field has been less than stellar... A lot of this is attributed to the talent level of the roster ( thanks Bill {sarcasm Bill let us down in the last 5 (or more?} years} ) ... At the same time, he was anointed early on... even if he wasn't officially appointed immediately, we all knew he was going to be the new Head Coach... Wolf was already there... Work and moves should have begun much sooner than it did... Not enough was done with the roster in the off season... He knew the roster had limitations.... He knew where the Large holes were... Nothing was done about them... "Trying" isn't doing...

And part two of the "product on the field" has been less than stellar is not on Bill... This team has been just plain bad a fundamental football... The offensive line has been atrocious... Like holy **** we are bad atrocious... this extends to other areas like assignments and basics like tackling... This might not be true, but at times it feels like they miss more tackles than a pee wee football team... Maybe thats just me... Probably thats just me... But eh, maybe someone else sees this... Is it on his staff? most assuredly... If there is a deficiency, its on the coaches to fix it...

The adage "Players win games coaches lose them" is coming to fruition in new england... Maybe it will turn around... maybe it starts with the benching of Stevenson, with the coaching staff finally bring some accountability to bear... we'll see...

there are more things to say... kinda need to take a minute or ten or more to think them thru before writing them down... At this point I am seriously questioning if Jerod Mayo is up to the task, is capable of rebuilding the Patriots.
I too was happy with the hire, all you heard was how "belichickian" he was in the locker room/meeting room/ prep time etc. this defense doesn't deserve that offense. Poor tackling is result of less practice time( shows across the league). His lack of experience was Exposed with the short week against the Jets. The OL can run block, but cant pass block to save their lives. But the rebuild is gonna take time. It is hard being the "get right" game again but football is cyclical. We will be back, just gonna take some time.

Was BB the right coach to leads the Pats after starting 1-4 in his Pats HC career, too?

yes he was.

Think Mayo & Wolf have pulled off the draft steal of the century in year 1?

Not sure of anything right now, "We're a running team until you stop us", yet they had the worst starting QB in the league chucking it almost 2:1, against a team that couldn't stop the run.

Maybe they wanted to see if Brissett could do it?
Maybe it was a test to see if they want to replace him with Maye?

They are playing Brissett and the youngsters. That was the plan, still is the plan for 2024. Mayo is doing exactly what he said he was going to do. The record is what we thought it would be.

Can’t fault the guy for injuries.
This is an oversimplification. Even if Mayo is on auto-pilot, as you suggest, that in itself is irresponsible. Things change, plans do not always work out, and a manager who cannot adapt to such circumstances is worthless. I'd give him to the end of the year, certainly, but if I HAD to make a judgment at this point, I'd fire him. The fact that the geriatric owner finds him a congenial travel companion turns out not to have been a valid criterion for hiring the guy, to the surprise of no rational observer whatever.

There was a big difference between to the two though. Bill earned the job from his defensive background and accomplishments as one of the best in the NFL. The team was deteriorating with aging veterans, bad contracts and lack of juice on both sides of the ball. With that said, I didn't expect a 5-11 season, was really disappointed in the defense and second guessed Bill's hire. I wasn't alone as the long debated rumors were true that Bob was going to fire Bill had the team not made the playoffs in 2001.

Mayo, on the hand, was only known as Bill's assistant coach who coached a mediocre LB group.

Any final evaluation must await at least the full season. That said, there is nothing invalid about offering a preliminary evaluation when that is in keeping with the discussion. If I had to make the binary determination fire-or-extend at this point, I'd fire him. His opportunity to redeem himself over the remainder of the season must be genuine, but I doubt he'll be able to do much with that opportunity, given the record to this point.

A "few years"!!!!! I hope for your employers's sake that you do not have anything to do with staff evaluation. Or maybe you work for the government, where every job is a sinecure irrespective of merit or accomplishment.

I think we should send Lisa Olson into the locker room to interview some of the players and find out what they think.

Yes. Typically rebuilds take a few years.

Dont let the historical success of BB and Brady cloud your opinions. This is a new regime with their own direction. Give them time.

Sorry. Far too soft a take for me. I'd rather have my opinions "clouded" by facts and sound expectations than by delusions and excuse-making.

dude, she old now... might need sometin' better than that...

How much time? Kraft's time left is at the Hour Glass stage (like many of us). How patient can he be?

A reasonable amount. Hard to quantify. As long as the team is learning, working hard and responding to coaching, then indefinite might be the best answer.

I find it hard to believe that some folks on here are ready for a change 5 games in to a rebuild.
