Excuse? I’m talking about last year. That defense is overrated by a lot of Pats fans, like the boogeymen defense was
Embarrassing

So the excuse is not injuries? Now the excuse is pivoting to "the schedule"?

Real men don't make excuses.
While I agree with your premise and I’m not in the crybaby camp, I’ll have you know many of us NEVER professed to be real men !

I’m a pencil pusher at BEST, not a real man !

I’m not really sure what patsfans expected here.
I expected the choices of:
Hire a complete coaching staff
$100,000,000 of cap space
3rd pick in every round of the draft

To result in improvement. I don’t see any aspect of the team that improved.

Or the defense wasn’t nearly as good last year as people think they were. I can’t take a “top 10” ranking seriously when there’s a 72-3 annihilation over 2 games in there plus a schedule featuring Trevor Siemian, Zach Wilson, Minshew, Devito at QB for the other team.

I think they were a product of schedule more than anything else.
I love these comments. So where are the defenses that weren’t top 10 and never had a bad game of faced a bad qb?

Arch Stanton laughs at expecting improvement, I guess we were supposed to make decisions that make the team worse. Are we tanking?

?

I don’t understand your question.

Do you think 72-3 comes from a good defense? Too bad we can’t play Tommy Devito every week maybe the defense would be better.

Mayos year 1 will be a free pass and will not count towards the 3 year window that new NFL HCs typically receive.

Wolfe will be gone before Mayo and there is no way to evaluate his 2024 draft this season. Perhaps this team shows signs of improvement in the latter part of the schedule, but the original Band is back for 2025.

At some point, Kraft will address how disappointed everyone is and that the Pats were dealt bad cards - Barmore and Andrews out, etc. Also, BK will pledge his confidence and support for Mayo as the right call to lead his team. Throwing BB under the bus how he left the team would not hurt either. Thats how they Pros do it in politics. Blame the last guy.

Wolf. No "e".

I expected better.

That we would at least be competitive.
We are different. The roster is bare. The coaches are inexperienced. I expected uncompetitive.

They are playing Brissett and the youngsters. That was the plan, still is the plan for 2024. Mayo is doing exactly what he said he was going to do. The record is what we thought it would be.

Can’t fault the guy for injuries.
What youngsters? Polk the second round pick. Every team plays their second round pick.

Qb - refuse to play the youngster
Rb. No youngsters
Te. Signed old free agents.
OL. Wallace sat until they were injuries with chunks and Lowe playing ahead of him. Robinson only playing due to injury will he play ahead of Jordan when Jordan is healthy?
WR. Baker and Boutte nowhere to be seen behind Osborne, Thornton and now Bourne.

DL. White is one of their best players not a “playing a youngster” plan.
There are no other young developmental guys on the DL that are playing to give a young guy a chance.
LB. No young guys on this unit. Oldsters McMillan and Uche getting plenty of time and playing poorly.
S. No youngsters except last guy off the bench
Cb. No youngster except Austin who was behind Marcus Wilson.

It is 100% incorrect and in fact backwards to say the Patriots decided to use this year to let young guys play and see what they have. They are actually holding back young guys more than playing them.

We are different. I did not expect success nor improvement. I was hoping for it - as I still do. But I definitely don’t expect it.

So why did we choose inexperienced coaches and a bare roster?

I was on board with this hire in the beginning, though I had reservations...

The biggest reservation was Mayos lack of experience... He was literally Coaching for 6 seasons before being hired as the Head Coach... Until this year, never called a game, Steve was making the defensive calls... Never coordinated a game... he worked as part of a group who did, but never had that responsibility... He doesn't have the knowledge base to draw a lot from to build a base to work from...

He is too effusive in his dealings with the media... he has continually said things that have been walked back, the two most glaring are "buring some cash" and "Maye out played Brissett"... He has diarrhea of the mouth... tries to hard it seems... It is okay to not answer every single question thrown his way...

The product on the field has been less than stellar... A lot of this is attributed to the talent level of the roster ( thanks Bill {sarcasm Bill let us down in the last 5 (or more?} years} ) ... At the same time, he was anointed early on... even if he wasn't officially appointed immediately, we all knew he was going to be the new Head Coach... Wolf was already there... Work and moves should have begun much sooner than it did... Not enough was done with the roster in the off season... He knew the roster had limitations.... He knew where the Large holes were... Nothing was done about them... "Trying" isn't doing...

And part two of the "product on the field" has been less than stellar is not on Bill... This team has been just plain bad a fundamental football... The offensive line has been atrocious... Like holy **** we are bad atrocious... this extends to other areas like assignments and basics like tackling... This might not be true, but at times it feels like they miss more tackles than a pee wee football team... Maybe thats just me... Probably thats just me... But eh, maybe someone else sees this... Is it on his staff? most assuredly... If there is a deficiency, its on the coaches to fix it...

The adage "Players win games coaches lose them" is coming to fruition in new england... Maybe it will turn around... maybe it starts with the benching of Stevenson, with the coaching staff finally bring some accountability to bear... we'll see...

there are more things to say... kinda need to take a minute or ten or more to think them thru before writing them down... At this point I am seriously questioning if Jerod Mayo is up to the task, is capable of rebuilding the Patriots.
Pape is my guy and he makes a valid case. I will just say this. Let me judge mayo from the time Drake starts and then on.. I don't believe for the life of me it's his personal choice to play Brissett.

I believe wolf has final say on the roster like the organizaional heichary list, and Groh as well as mayo.

If they can string some wins together and look more like a competent team then the narrative will change.

We are different. I did not expect success nor improvement. I was hoping for it - as I still do. But I definitely don’t expect it.
Why would they make decisions with hiring a staff making draft picks and spending $100,000,000 without the goal of improving?

if you expected them to take all of those opportunities and not improve in any way, wouldn’t you want the guy who made those decisions fired?

Perhaps we have different amounts of patience on this matter. Perhaps I can take a wait and see approach and reassess if year 2 goes south.

I’m not married to this staff. So, if mayo/avp/wolfe fail - yes I’d be fine if they leave. I loved BB. But it was time to go and I didn’t take an Atavan over it.

Let’s be real about the Pats defense.

They haven’t had a great defense since Super Bowl 53. Since then they’ve steadily declined and the trend is still going into this season.

So why did we choose inexperienced coaches and a bare roster?
Sometimes - when you’re ugly - you don’t get to CHOOSE your gf. You can either stay single or settle. NE did the latter.
