October 5, 2014: "We're on to Cincinnati"
Patriots silence their doubters, crush Bengals 43-17
Pats rush for 220 yards; Brady surpasses 50,000 yard mark

Sunday October 5, 2014 at 8:30
Week 5, Game 5 at Gillette Stadium
New England Patriots 43, Cincinnati Bengals 17
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Marvin Lewis
QBs: Tom Brady, Andy Dalton
Odds: Even pick'em
TV: NBC; Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth
Patriots improve to 3-2, Bengals drop to 3-1

What a difference a week makes. The Patriots were back to their ruthless best on Sunday Night Football, blowing out previously unbeaten Cincinnati 43-17. Six days after getting whacked by Kansas City in primetime, the Pats ignored the noise and rallied for their best performance of the year, racking up 505 yards of offense, running 82 plays from scrimmage and controlling the ball for more than plus-17 minutes, 38:56 to 21:04.

After the two teams exchanged punts to begin the second half, the Bengals looked like they might make this a close game. Adam Jones returned the punt 47 yards, and on the next play Andy Dalton threw a 37-yards touchdown pass to Mohamed Sanu, closing the gap to 20-10. The Patriots responded with a 10-play, 86-yard drive highlighted by runs of 14 and 19 yards by Shane Vereen, culminating in a 16-yard TD pass to Gronk. On the ensuing kickoff Brandon Bolden hit former Patriot Brandon Tate, jarring the ball loose. Kyle Arrington scooped up the ball at the nine yard line and ran it in for another touchdown.

With that the Patriots had scored two touchdowns in a matter of six seconds and blown the game wide open, taking a 34-10 lead. From there the Pats played keep-away, grinding out nine, nine, and eight-play scoring drives to wind down the clock. Stephen Gostkowski kicked a career-high five field goals, Stevan Ridley rushed for 113 yards and a TD, Vereen added 108 yards from scrimmage, Gronk had six catches for 100 yards and a TD, and Tim Wright had five receptions for 85 yards and a TD.

With the victory the Patriots owned an NFL best 38-9 record in the month of October since 2003, and a league best 23-1 record in October over that same span.

Tom Brady and the Patriots routed the Bengals and quieted the doubters.

The three-time Super Bowl winner finally looked like a quarterback who has thrown for 50,000 yards in his career, as New England dominated the NFL's last unbeaten team and beat Cincinnati 43-17 Sunday night.

Just six days earlier, the Patriots lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 41-14, which unleashed criticism that Brady had regressed and lacked talented teammates to help him.

Gronk's first half reception put Brady over 50,000 yards passing in Tom's career.
His 27-yard catch and run was followed by a 17-yard TD pass to the other tight end, Tim Wright.

I want to say there was a kickoff return or pint return where... Collins just absolutely laid out a Bengal. It was awesome. He got flagged but the whole team was LIT up from it.

If you go to about the 46:20 mark of that first half video you will see that play. Brandon Tate was the return man. He's on his left sideline, upper part of the screen. Jamie Collins demolishes him.

After a pair of field goals Collins recovered an AJ Green fumble on a hit by Revis, late in the half to set up another FG to make it 20-3.

The Patriots were super agressive from start to finish. While it did result in a lot of flags (12 penalties, -114 yards), it was obvious that the entire team was extremely motivated for this game.

October 5, 2017: Pats win sloppy TNF game in Tampa
Gostkowski kicks 4 field goals while Bucs' Nick Folk goes 0-3
Brady ties NFL record for most regular season wins

Thursday October 5, 2017 at 8:25
Week 5, Game 5 at Raymond James Stadium
New England Patriots 19, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 14
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Dirk Koetter
QBs: Tom Brady, Jameis Winston
Odds: New England favored by 3½
TV: CBS/NFLN/Amazon Prime; Jim Nantz, Tony Romo
Patriots improve to 3-2, Bucs drop to 2-2

Stephen Gostkowski kicked four field goals and the Patriots overcame two turnovers to win a close TNF game in Tampa. Brandin Cooks had five catches for 85 yards, Danny Amendola caught all eight passes thrown his way for 77 yards, and Chris Hogan had eight receptions for 74 yards and the Pats only touchdown. The Patriots were aided by Tampa kicker Nick Folk going 0-3 on his field goal attempts.

For Patriot fans living on the gulf coast of Florida, this was the one and only time that Tom Brady played a regular season game in Tampa as a member of the New England Patriots. As part of the NFL schedule rotation, the two clubs should have played in Tampa in 2009 - but due to poor attendance issues, the Bucs volunteered to move that 'home' game to Wembley Stadium. The current scheduling system did not come into play until the league expanded to 32 teams in 2002, so the last time the Patriots played at Tampa Bay prior was back in 1997.

Tom Brady tied the NFL record for regular season wins with some timely help from a porous New England defense showing signs of improvement.

Brady threw for 303 yards and one touchdown, and the Patriots held off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19-14 to rebound from a last-second loss that left them searching for answers to defensive woes.

The Super Bowl champions rebounded from a 33-30 loss to Carolina, despite Brady turning the ball over twice -- on his first interception in eight regular-season games and a fumble on one of Tampa Bay's three sacks.

Neither of Brady's turnovers led to points for the Bucs (2-2), who were was unable to do much offensively until the fourth quarter, when their comeback bid was hindered by two missed field goals.

Brady threw a 5-yard TD pass to Chris Hogan in the second quarter, and Stephen Gostkowski kicked field goals of 27, 23, 45 and 48 yards for the Patriots (3-2).

Jameis Winston rallied Tampa Bay late with an 18-yard TD pass to Cameron Brate that trimmed New England's lead to 16-14 with 2:09 remaining.

With his 186th career regular-season win as a starter, Brady tied Brett Favre and Peyton Manning for the most by a quarterback in NFL history. He also has 25 postseason victories, including five Super Bowls.

Playing without injured star tight end Rob Gronkowski (thigh), Brady was 30 of 40 passing with one interception. Danny Amendola had eight catches for 77 yards and Hogan had eight for 74 yards.

Repeated undisciplined play and mental errors hindered the Patriots and gave the Buccaneers new life, but Tampa Bay simply did not capitalize on the mistakes.

For the first time in more than a season, a defense forced Brady to commit two turnovers. But the Buccaneers scored no points off of them.

**Stephon Gilmore followed Tampa Bay star receiver Mike Evans for most of the night, limiting him to five catches for 49 yards. Big rebound game from Gilmore.

**The Pats got back to the short passing game on offense. Tampa Bay had no answers for Danny Amendola, who caught eight passes for 77 yards and would have had more if not for penalties.

**New England also ran the ball effectively. Dion Lewis broke a 31-yarder on his first carry. Mike Gillislee kept the chains moving and finished with 12 rushing attempts for 52 yards. The trio of Gillislee, Lewis, and James White combined for 177 yards from scrimmage.

**Even though the Pats worked the quick passing game to Amendola, and even though they ran the ball efficiently, Tom Brady still got whacked throughout the game. He has absorbed a high number of hits this season, and Thursday night was much of the same.

**Strong game from Patriots safety Patrick Chung, who recorded multiple pass breakups.

**The Patriots were whistled for costly penalties throughout the night.

The Bucs didn’t have a third-down conversion until late in the third quarter, and Doug Martin’s 1-yard TD came on a drive the Patriots kept alive with a hands-to-the-face penalty on third down.

Winston finished 26 of 45 with 334 yards and zero interceptions. DeSean Jackson had five receptions for 106 yards.

Playing without injured tight end Rob Gronkowski (thigh), Brady finished 30 of 40 with one interception.

Streak ends
Brady opened the game with four straight completions before throwing his first interception of the season, overthrowing a wide-open Hogan in the middle of the field to end a streak of 264 pass attempts without an interception.

Bouncing back
Since 2003, New England is 44-6 in regular-season games following a loss. The Patriots have dropped back-to-back games only six times during that time span – in 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012 and twice in 2015. As a starter, Brady is 44-10 in games following a loss.

CB Vernon Hargreaves was unable to stop Chris Hogan from reaching the end zone in the first quarter.

To me those Bucs 'Color Rush' uniforms looked more like pajamas than pro football unis.

Dwayne Allen was on the field for 50 snaps, in place of injure Rob Gronkowski (thigh injury).

Dion Lewis had 53 yards rushing on just seven carries, and another ten yards receiving.

Brady went 30-40 for 303 yards, with one TD and one pick.

Danny Amendola had eight receptions for 77 yards.

Jameis Winston was under constant pressure, sacked twice while throwing 20 incomplete passes.

Jonathan Jones broke up a pass intended for TE OJ Howard on the final, would-have-been-game-winning play of the game.

October 5, 2008: Pats win at SF, 30-21
Pats defense dominates; offense controls the clock
Randy Moss makes Matt Cassel look like Tom Brady

Sunday October 5, 2008 at 4:15
Week 5, Game 4 at Candlestick Park
New England Patriots 30, San Francisco 49ers 21
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Mike Nolan
QBs: Matt Cassel, J.T. O'Sullivan
Odds: New England favored by 3
TV: CBS; **** Enberg, Randy Cross, Dan Fouts
Patriots improve to 3-1, 49ers drop to 2-3

After a bye week to think about the Wildcat Game, the Patriots bounced back with a win at San Francisco. Matt Cassel had a beautiful first quarter 66-yard touchdown pass to Randy Moss (111 yards receiving), Wes Welker had eight catches for 73 yards, and Jabar Gaffney made three clutch catches for 35 yards. Sammy Morris (16 carries, 63 yards) led a rushing attack that gained 144 yards with two touchdowns.

The defense held San Fran to 1-9 on third down, which in turn led to the Patriots controlling the ball by a two-to-one margin (39:52-20:08) and running 32 more offensive plays (80 to 48). On occasion the Pats went with a speed dime defensive package consisting of one defensive lineman, four linebackers and six defensive backs. Rodney Harrison, Brandon Meriweather and Deltha O'Neal each had a pick.

Special teams was mostly a positive. Stephen Gostkowski connected on field goals of 35, 40 and 49 yards, plus three touchbacks on his kickoffs. Ellis Hobbs averaged 28 yards on three kickoff returns, and Kevin Faulk averaged 9.5 yards on two punt returns. But Chris Hanson had a rough day, with punts of 35 and 32 yards, a 50 yarder going into the end zone for a touchback, and in the fourth quarter shanking one out of bounds for just 25 yards.

This game was supposed to be a homecoming for Tom Brady, who grew up in the area and had never played at Candlestick Park, but Bernard Pollard prevented that from happening.

From Randy Moss’ dynamic 66-yard touchdown catch to Kevin Faulk’s score on a direct snap, the New England Patriots returned to their usual regular-season form in an unusual place.

Faulk rushed for two scores, Matt Cassel had 259 yards passing and the Patriots won in San Francisco for the first time in franchise history, beating the 49ers 30-21 Sunday.

Moss had five catches for 111 yards for the Patriots (3-1), who returned from their bye week with an effort that should erase the bad taste of the defending AFC champions’ stunning loss to Miami last month, which ended their 21-game regular-season winning streak.

Although the first quarter was filled with impressive throws and big interceptions by both teams, New England turned down the drama with a ball-control offense that largely kept San Francisco (2-3) off the field in the middle two quarters.

Kevin Faulk, just one part of New England’s multiplayer rushing attack, got his second TD on a direct snap near the goal line in the third quarter, echoing the Dolphins’ infamous series of snaps to Ronnie Brown two weeks ago. With a week off to recover from that debacle, coach Bill Belichick revived a play he’s used many times in the past for Faulk – and he even threw in a handful of unusual defenses to remain unbeaten in the Pats’ past six games following byes.

New England kept the ball for more than 32 minutes in the first three quarters, while Mike Martz’s Niners offense couldn’t get a first down during a 36-minute stretch spanning the middle two periods.

Isaac Bruce caught two TD passes from J.T. O’Sullivan, while Frank Gore rushed for 54 yards and caught an early scoring pass in San Francisco’s second straight loss. After a strong start, the 49ers managed just 23 yards in the middle two quarters, and O’Sullivan misfired regularly in a 14-of-29 effort for 130 yards with three interceptions.

Stephen Gostkowski kicked three field goals, including a 49-yarder with 4:42 to play. Cassel was a solid 22-of-32 despite taking five sacks, but New England relied on its run game and defense.

After the clubs traded early interceptions, Gore lined up as a wide receiver and beat Ellis Hobbs down the middle for a 16-yard TD catch. Cassel replied with his perfect strike to Moss, who caught it in full stride behind Nate Clements and Walt Harris, San Francisco’s top two defensive backs — but the Niners went 64 yards on their next four plays, culminating in Bruce’s first TD catch.

Then the Patriots settled down to the grind. LaMont Jordan hobbled off the field in the second quarter with a leg injury, but New England’s committee of rushers had no trouble during an 80-yard drive ending in Faulk’s first TD dive 6 seconds before halftime.

Four players had at least four carries in the first half as New England took a 17-14 lead.

J.T. O’Sullivan threw a terrible interception to Rodney Harrison on San Francisco’s second play of the second half, and the Patriots scored moments later on a direct snap to Faulk for a 2-yard run.

Both teams used unorthodox defensive alignments in the first half. New England sometimes went to a speed-based scheme that featured just one lineman and six defensive backs on a few occasions, while San Francisco again employed its Big Sub package — featuring four linemen and five defensive backs — to guard against big plays, though it didn’t help on Moss’ long catch.

Patriots drop to 2-2, Chiefs improve to 4-0

It's hard enough to slow down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs under the best of circumstances.

Try doing it with your star quarterback shelved by COVID-19, a 34-year-old journeyman taking his place, your top running back headed to injured reserve and a flight that didn't land in Kansas City until shortly before kickoff.

Yet the New England Patriots still managed to give the Chiefs fits for most of the way Monday night, hanging within a field goal of the Super Bowl champs until late in the third quarter. It wasn't until Tyrann Mathieu took an interception back for a touchdown in the fourth that Kansas City clinched its 26-10 victory at Arrowhead Stadium.

It was a defensive battle for much of the contest, with the Chiefs holding a 6-3 lead entering halftime. The Patriots had an opportunity to kick a field goal just before the conclusion of the second quarter, but Brian Hoyer took an untimely and unnecessary sack from Frank Clark with no timeouts remaining.

To say that New England badly missed QB Cam Newton would be an understatement. Veteran signal-caller Brian Hoyer received the start in Newton's stead, but he was benched in the third quarter due to his horrendous play. Hoyer completed 15-of-24 passes for a measly 130 yards and one interception, and he even lost the ball on a strip-sack, capping off a performance that he'll want to forget in a hurry.

In came Jarrett Stidham, who drove his Patriots for a touchdown on his first drive, but things quickly fell apart shortly after. He finished the game with five completions from 13 attempts for one score and two interceptions, with one pick going back the other way for a Kansas City score.

One bright spot on the New England offense was Damien Harris, who saw his first game action of the season. He took his 17 handoffs for 100 yards, gashing the Chiefs defense on seemingly every carry. In the passing game, Damiere Byrd was the only player to top 40 receiving yards, hauling in five of his 10 targets for 80 yards and three first downs.

Odds: New York favored by 7½

Patriots drop to 0-2, Jets improve to 2-1

Jim Plunkett returned to the starting lineup after missing two games while recuperating from shoulder surgery. It didn't go well, as he threw three picks before being replaced by this new guy, Steve Grogan, who had entered the season as the Pats third string quarterback.

Coolly, with the arrogance of a card player who knows everyone's hand, Joe Namath directed the Jets' offense to a crushing 36?7 victory over the New England Patriots yesterday.

It was one of the neatest games he has fashioned, helped by the threat of the New Yorkers' running attack that kept the Patriots off balance.

Meanwhile, not even the dramatic appearance of Jim Plunkett as the visitors' quarterback, fewer than four weeks after surgery for a separated left shoulder, could deflate the Jets' defense.
The Jets' defense had been scolded and prodded all week after yielding 66 points in its first two games.
But before the Emperor of Japan and 57,365 paying fans at Shea Stadium, the New York defense closed off the Patriots' running game (72 yards) and simply laid back and waited for Plunkett and his replacements to throw.
“I felt accurate,” said Namath later.
And he was. Before J.J. Jones became the first black quarterback to appear in a regular?season game for the Jets, Namath had tossed for four touchdowns and completed 15 of 21 passes.
The first half was one of the most efficient 30 minutes he has had. Of 16 passes, 13 were on target and one was intercepted. The club traveled 201 yards on his arm.
“I was honored to have the Emperor of Japan see our game,” said Namath, who was also fortunate to have Richard Caster and Jerome Barkum.
Caster has become so good these days that the first time he failed to hold onto a pass, after diving for it, the crowd cheered him for his effort.

Barkum and Caster each scored twice after Carl Garrett opened the New York scoring in the second quarter on a 6?yard run. The Caster and Barkum scores were the first the Pats had yielded by air this season.
Plunkett played remarkably considering his condition. Throwing into a wall of Jets who virtually rubbed their hands with anticipation, he completed 8 of 18 firsthalf attempts. His first three of the second half were incomplete and he went to the sidelines. Did he ask to come out?
“No,” he replied. “I never ask to come out.”

Until Namath was intercepted by Ron Bolton before the half (the seventh time this young campaign) he had completed nine straight passes. Often, he looked as if he were a seaman scanning the horizon as he stayed in his pocket and stayed and stayed, protected by his offensive line.

Leading by 13?0, the Jets' Phil Wise snared a Plunkett pass late in the second quarter. Two plays later the Jets scored. On the next New England series, Roscoe Word intercepted a Plunkett pass in the end tone. So the Pats were down by 19?0 at intermission.

On consecutive series in the third period, Turk recovered a Mack Herron fumble to position a field goal by Pat Leahy and then intercepted a Plunkett pass.

The last time the Pats were beaten so decisively was in 1972 when the Baltimore Colts stopped them, 32?0. The last time Namath threw four or more touchdown passes came that same year against the Colts in the memorable one?on?one game with Johnny Unitas, when he threw six.

Be careful what you wish for. After firing Mike Holovak, things got worse rather than better with Clive Rush as the head coach.

For the first time all season the Patriots held an opponent to uner 30 points. Unfortunately the Pats turned the ball over three times, bringing their season total up to 11 after four games. The Patriots also had their worst rushing game of the year, managing to run for just 35 yards on 16 carries - while the Jete rushed for 164 yards.

The Patriots led briefly in the second quarter on a 14-yard pass from Mike Taliaferro to Ron Sellers. But the Jets controlled the game after that, finishing with 66 offensive plays to the Pats 43. The game did get interesting when Jim Nance scored on a 4-yard run with 6:40 to play. That made the score 23-14, but the Patriots could not find the end zone again after that.

After two consecutive losses, the New York Jets displayed more efficiency but not any particular flair today in defusing Clive Rush's booby traps for a 23-14 victory over the Boston Patriots.

Please don't shoot the messenger. Yes, the Jete defeated the Patriots three times on this date.

Thankfully all those games were a long time ago.

1963 Patriots: "Diary of a Winner" - Fenway Park Diaries
The New York Jets fight off a threat and beat the Patriots, 31-24
A weak defensive backfield played like All Stars and carried the Jets to a 31-24 victory over the Patriots. The New York defense came up with five interceptions that the offense turned into 24 points.
The Jets jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead. Trouble for the Patriots started with a high fourth down snap from center to Tom Yewcic who was back to punt. This gave them the ball on the Patriots’ three and an eventual score.
A minute later, Babe Parilli had his first pass play intercepted by Jets’ linebacker Larry Grantham, who raced to the Patriots’ two, leading to the Jets’ second score.
When the Patriots got the ball back they orchestrated a 47 yard drive. Tom Yewcic came in for Parilli and tossed a nine yard swing pass to Larry Garron and then hit Art Graham down the middle at the five, who ran it in for the score, making it 14 to 7.

New York bounced right back however, as **** Wood connecting with Bake Turner for a 53 yard strike. Just before the half, the Patriots came back with a 70 yard march that resulted in three points by Gino Cappelletti from 22 yards making the score 21-10 at the half.
In the third quarter after **** Guessman hit a field goal for the Jets, d-back, Tony Stricker latched on to the Jets’ fifth interception and took it down to the Boston 15. Wood combined with Maynard to make it 31-10.

Now the Patriots put on a fantastic finish that just fell short. Trailing 31-10 in the fourth quarter, they came across with two touchdowns and came within 10 yards of tying the score. They first scored in the fourth with Jimmy Colclough grabbing a touchdown pass from the 15. When they got the ball back, Tom Yewcic hit Art Graham with a 57 yard long bomb for another touchdown.
Down by only seven points now, Yewcic, who played almost the entire game for Parilli, then hit Larry Garron and Jim Colclough with successive passes, that brought the ball down to the New York 10 yard line, when time ran out.
**** Wood was the sharpshooter for the Jets, pitching three touchdowns. Two were to Don Maynard and one to Bake Turner. Tom Yewcic fired three touchdown passes to Art Graham twice and to Jim Colclough once.

Interesting choice of words in the article below, as six years later it was the baseball team from Queens rather than the football team that they shared Shea Stadium with that would famously be referred to as 'the Amazing Mets'.

The amazing New York Jets, not to be confused with the hapless Mets, stood off a late challenge to defeat the Boston Patriots, 31--24, last night in an American Football League game at the Polo Grounds.

AFL Media Game Summary
Note that on the final drive, a 39-yard screen pass to Larry Garron is referred to as a "safety-valve" pass.
