This was never going to be a great season

The Covid opt outs really hurt us
It sucks because even without the opt outs we were still probably a good team. Imagine a good QB on that team. Same can be probably said with Mac Jones rookie year.

The 2020 team wasn’t winning a SB no matter who was at QB. The salary cap had caught up and they needed a reset. Kinda like 2009, 2013.

There was something else that happened before the season that hurt us a lot more…and we all know what it was even if we don’t want to admit it.

I think everyone understood that this team was going to be 0-4 or 1-4 to start the season. But per usual a group wants instant gratification and when they don't get it they come on here wanting to fire the coach, and gm, put a raw but talented qb in behind an abysmal o line, that could get him injured. If they don't get it.

My opinions have little to do with how they gave started the season and everything to do with how they screwed up the off season.
Had they tried to field the best team they could and it started slowly, I would understand that. The product in the field now is the result of the worst off season I’ve ever seen.

Football players get injured. Football players also need to play to develop.

I get needing to sit maye till he gets it/the line gets better (lol). What I’m worried about is this….will we be doing the same thing next year? If the lines absolute ****, does he sit and whomever else play or what? I’d hope/think not…can’t keep hiding/protecting him.

You must have missed the spring of 2020

If we were sitting him because of the OL and think we need to protect him from his own OL, why did we put him in when the game was decided to take a beating?
They literally sent make into preserve brissett.

I wasn't thinking of you when i posted that, i wasn't thinking of anyone in particular

Do the Patriots have a top 100 offensive player on their roster? I guess Stevenson could be like in the 70-80 range maybe. But this offense is an absolute embarrassment worthy of ridicule

I think the investment in your own players is what smart franchises do. Bill was able to get away with doing that because of stability at the QB position for so long that simply can't be overlooked. We don't have that right now until Drake takes over. So the FA dollars was spent on identifying guys that were part of the present and future. This likely the last long term contracts for dugger or ownenu.. if they end up really fading then they will get veteran minimums from a team. Furthermore dugger and owenu were top 10 players at thier positions. Those contracts aren't hurting the team. I agree 1-2 it's not the worse place to be. For example the Ravens and Bengals are winless both are elite teams in the NFL.
A large part of the stability Brady brought was accountability in the locker room. He learned from McGintest and others and became the sheriff in the locker room. There were others who stepped up and were sheriffs on their own right, like Bruschi and Hightower. The team sucks right now because there are no sheriffs in the locker room. A wild eyed menace of a LT would be a great place to find a leader.

Losing didn't bother me last season, in fact I was all for it. I saw the writing on the wall and wanted the Pats to have their pick of the QB litter. Then the following season grab the line guys etc. I also though the QB would play week 1 and that the offense would be much, much better.

Instead, Brissett is playing, the line is complete crap due to injury, it's borderline ok when all whole. Because of that I have zero feeling they will win many if any more games even IF Maye plays. Team is so beat up and in transition that it's gonna be a hard road.
Even if Maye starts going forward the team will struggle because of the horrific Offensive Line…..he’s better riding the pine and learning the offense and hopefully next season we will have improved OL and O weapons and Maye will be really ready to go then

Losing doesn’t really bother me this season and I think we should still start JB for the 49ers. This season has always been about development of Maye and yeah, you could argue that it would have been a good idea to throw him out game 1, but maybe the coaching staff has decided for whatever reason that starting JB is a better decision? We won’t win many games this year but it’s about next year. If JB continues to struggle, start Maye by game 5-7, but not against SF. It won’t be pretty.

Let’s hope next season is better and I think it will be as long as Maye can play at least average.
If things do work out, it'll be cool to refer to this as the Mayo and Maye era.

Has a nice ring to it.

......see what I did there?

They do need a real OC. Matty P is better than OB or Van Pelt.

...latter now just makes me think of

I decided well before the first game that I would pay little attention to wins and losses and would value the team's performance based on what progress they are making in developing and evaluating the roster and on how the development of the new team leadership is going.

On that basis, to this point this is a losing team. I suppose the grade would have to be Incomplete, but it's not looking good. If the team were a student, there would be a note going home to the parents.
I haven't looked this up, but I think we may be in the midst of the worst losing stretch in the history of the Boston/New England Patriots.

Yeah this year and next, and it'll be close to the post-Parilli doldrums and the Flutieless 90's.

Odds would have been in their favor with Tom Brady at QB I know that.
No. They were worse than the 2019 team and had no $ to do anything about it even without Brady’s contract.
