Defensive Snap Counts 9/8 vs Bengals.

The only real bad quarter we played offensively was q3. 3 straight 3 and outs. No suprise thats when cincy’s td finally came. After our ensuing long fg drive which included the end of quarter timeout, booth review on rhams fumble, and i think a bengals defender injury timeout, we buckled down again to give up 3 points their final 2 drives.

As long as we maintained drives fairly regularly the d was lights out

ROFL

Hill deserves to play in front of players that beat him out for the roster? NOT

If anything, Pharms should get more reps to keep Godchaux fresher.
That's not what the poster was asking me. Play Pharms or play Hill, I don't care. They held the Bengals to 70 yards rushing and sacked Burrow 3 times. There is no massive need for a DT upgrade, they have good DT's.

CORNERS
We have our three top corners: Gonzo, Jones and Jones.
Marco Wilson was the 4th in the 20's, filling in some for the Jones boys who were at 80% and 71%.
So, almost always had 5 corners out there.
Jon Jones moonlighted some at FS, they seemed to have been playing matchups. The Bengals were missing some big tall WR's to injury, I doubt the snap counts will look the same from week to week.
SAFETY
We must have played a lot of dime. Dugger and Peppers were always out there and Hawkins logged 47%.
The three safety defense has been a thing since Chung/Harmon/DMC. It's a passing league now, this is more of a base defense in the modern NFL. A safety has replaced the weak side LB on most downs.

I would think if the team can bring in a big body to their PS they would do so. maybe even this week.

They played so few defensive snaps that percentage is going to be misleading. Godchaux’s 33/51 (65%) is an easier workload than last year’s average of 40/67 (60%).

Harder to make a direct comparison with Ekuale since he’s never been the #2 before, but he did have 40/75 and 38/75 games in 2022.

This is something I was noticing and slightly OT but; it's good that the count was down, correct? We're so used to the high snap counts of the last few years, which themselves could lead to injury.

I wonder if it will be a trend, if finally the offense can chew some time and save snaps from the defense getting exhausted.

Might be a bit harsh : but who cares ? Like, if we run Ekuale, Godchaux & Wise and that’s it, but we get a few wins, who cares ? Neither of the three are the future. So if they burn out among the way - so what ? I’d say ride it. This isn’t Barmore or Gonzales.

And one of those 3 catches came when the playcall inexplicably set Gonzalez 10 yards off from Chase on 3rd and 5. I can only think someone else had the short area responsibility on Chase and failed.

while more than likely true, at this time, with the team at 1-0, the focus remains on winning games.
playing these guys these types of workloads probably does not bode well for them remaining healthy and fresh for future games.
same can be said for Stevenson

Noticed some curious spacing on several plays in general where CBs had to offer some pretty heavy cushion to the WRs on 3rd and fairly short type of situations. Won’t think too much of it after game 1, but will look at it next week.

Looked it up, it seems like Marcus may have been responsible for the short area.

Correct. And I’m saying - while it’s not really nice - that I don’t care if they remain healthy, nor fresh.

so you do not want to win games this season?
I’m saying - let’s get a win each week. Play each week like it’s your last chance to win.

I don’t really care about the players we aren’t going forward with. Rham is a really good player. It’s my estimation he will not be around when NE becomes a SB contender again.

I don’t want the 2024 Patriots to “save players” for the future - amongst the group you named. If there is a chance to win a game “if we ride the vets”, so be it.

you are talking about down the road in seasons.
I am talking about games.
we will still need these 4 DT's to be standing in November, especially in the team is 4-4 come November

I’d love to be 4-4. I don’t even know if this team will win 4 this season. So if we have a chance to win - go for it. Don’t screw it up and lose by 3 because you had losers on the line, being gashed.

If this team wins 6+ games, it’d be an absolute miracle. I hope it happens. But I think NE is in for a long season. Yesterday was nice. But game #1 often sees bizarro twists and turns.

So, there is no need for an DT upgrade because we have good Dt's.

1) The DT's are so good that we needed to elevate a Practice Squad player for the game.

2) So, we needed no upgrade from Hill. Well, we cut him and then signed a player off waivers. Eric Johnson just isn't ready yet. We will then have Pharms, Ekuale and Johnson as our depth. I'm OK with that; there is no choice. But I would hardly call them "good".
======================================
3) I guess there is some miscommunication. When I talk about upgrades, I am not talking about this year. That ship has sailed, unless Wolf surprises us with a trade, perhaps for a center.

LET US SEE WHO WE HAVE FOR 2025
A) We will have Barmore, presuming a full recovery; we will have Godchaux and we will have question mark Eric Johnson.
B) No one else is signed and should be carrying 5 DT's and non-EDGE DE's.
C) None of Wise, Pharms, Ekuale are signed for 2025. It not clear whether any of them will or should be re-signed.

BOTTOM LINE
We disagree. That's fine.
I just don't consider Pharms and Ekuale as good players. I am not sure that Wise will be extended. And I nothing about Eric Johnson.

So, sure, I would welcome an upgrade or two.

Correct. And I’m saying - while it’s not really nice - that I don’t care if they remain healthy, nor fresh.
You talk as if we are wasting a roster spot money to have backups for Godchaux and Wise. We are only carrying 5 DE/DT's, hardly a waste of resources. We will continue to need to elevate players like Hill until Eric Johnson is ready, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

Just BTW, Godchaux is indeed part of the future playoff runs in 2025 and 2026.

I like you. You have so much faith and hope. It’s an excellent quality.

I’m more of a glass half empty. While I would love to see it, I do not see NE competing with the big dawgs in 2025, nor 2026.
