Once Maye Is Ready, Should We Even Carry 3 QB's?

Folks seem to think that this veteran should be on the 53 so that he can step right in and win. IMO, that is not the role of the emergency QB.
To be clear, I think that several teams will carry only 2 QB's on the 53, especially now that the new rules allow the emergency QB to come from the Practice Squad. Essentially the scout QB from the Practice Squad "should" be the emergency QB.
Are you saying that the emergency QB from the PS is QB2 to start the season? Sure that's possible with the new PS rules, but I doubt a QB better than Zappe and good enough for QB2 will tolerate being yanked around like that for long. It's not just exposure to other teams that's a risk, but a player might say "enough" and not sign the weekly contract.

EDIT: Forgot to add -- a player can still be approached by another team while protected and say, "Hey, want to get off the PS yoyo? We want you on our 53." That's legal under the rules.

I am resigned to having Zappe on the 53 unless the team is ready for Maye to be the #2.

But, for me, when Maye is ready to be the #2, Zappe should cut. Obviously, folks here want this to be anywhere for Game 1 this year to Game 1 in 2025.

Are you really saying that we have no need for roster spots at any positions?

I guess decisions on cut-down day will be easy.

But I'll play.

After Maye is ready, I'd want to have the following on Offense. I do understand that we need someone like Zappe to start the season on the 53-man roster if Maye and/or the OL isn't ready for prime time.

OFFENSE (25)
QB - 2
OT - 4 (especially if Wallace isn't ready for major contributions
IOL - 6 (3 starters, 3 backups)
RB - 4 (including a STer like Montgomery or Bolden
WR - 6
TE - 3
Agree. Send Milton to the PS. He won't be picked up. If not carry 2 TE instead of 3. This is a different offense than last seasons BoB with the multi TE sets.

Based off early reports I’m beginning to think Maye will be ready. If so, you’re auditioning for the #2 role not the starter role and it’s Brissett versus Milton.

That's a better situation to be in, assuming the OL is okay -- and that's a big assumption.

Maybe, maybe not. We'll learn more when camp starts.

Zappe (or another vet backup) will be on the 53. It shall be! I hope it’s Zappe just to drive the anti-Zappers bananas.
I dont see that at all. I see that spot going to a kid playing corner/safety. Who the hell is going to pick up Zappe as a cut in september?
Gabbert, Tannahill are still out there. Add keenum, Huntley as likely cuts he doesnt sniff a job.

I can easily see a 1-3 or 0-4 start, with the D playing well and the offense not able to do much with Brissett.
this could lead to an opportunity for Maye game 5 or so.

that said, if the team is willing to let "best players play", I see Maye as winning the job in August and playing week 1.

Even if the OL is giving up lots of sacks in the preseason? That’s how you ruin or injure a rookie QB. I don’t care how well he plays: the OL needs to prove it can provide adequate protection, particularly on his left side.

yes. the OL play will be better this year than last. the weapons will be better too.
Maye is mobile and capable of making big plays off platform. he could energize the team and fan base.
if he is the best player in August, I say play him in September

I’m only buying a ticket and driving from PA if Maye is in.

ha! I will be there each home game regardless, but I too hope Maye is the starter from day 1 of the regular season. I believe Brissett is a fine back up QB, but no where near a starting QB player.

If I was local I would.
But the last game I drove to still scars me I saw the QBs warming up and I could hear the wind rip when Allen was throwing then, I saw Hoyer warming up and I’m like ok he’s throwing some nice balls, ok Mac’s up next, and I see ducks from 10 yds Away and no velocity and I’m like wait a minute maybe Mac is holding back in warm ups, then in the game he threw so many ducks and I saw Allen toy with our defense the whole game.
I was so mad I refused to go out with my wife around town and I wanted to fight like every Bills fan I saw there. I was livid. And I vowed not to go to another game til we have a QB,

By the way I think Hoyer should of started over Mac,

Both remain to be seen.

And the team and fan base will be devastated should he sustain a serious injury because we didn’t have patience. There is no reason to risk Drake Maye this season, and many reasons to be cautious.

I’d love to see Drake out there, but I want him to be playing here a long time, and playing him before he’s ready or before the OL is adequate is foolish. There’s no real reward, but there’s a lot of real risk. He’s 21, and the Patriots roster this year will be lucky to finish higher than last in the AFC. What’s the rush?

he is going to need 18-24 games to really "get it" and not feel, play and make mistakes like a rookie. with his rookie contract, why waste one of those contract years? we saw Mac start day 1 and he went the entire season. Maye more mobile. Maye bigger and stronger. OL better.
could he get hurt? sure. but if the team wants to be competitive in 2-3 seasons, they are delaying that time frame not playing hm

Your points certainly have merit. To me there is a balance where Maye needs to establish a decent foundation that he can build from before seeing live fire. Otherwise he runs the risk of reverting to/developing bad habits as opposed to learning from mistakes.

I think too many here are getting bogged down with "should they play Maye" or "don't play Maye," either he wins the job from Brissett or he doesn't. You don't just hand him the job.

Mac may have sucked, but he proved in that 2021 preseason joint practice with the Giants he was at least better than dead armed Cam Newton.

It's not a choice to make, it's a competition... and competition will answer the question.

To your point, developing a rookie QB is a two step process. Step 1 - win the competition vs the other candidates. Even though beating out Brisket should be a much harder than Cam, it is still the easiest step. Step 2 - Become a reliable NFL starter by delivering on the field. This step can take a couple of years. The hard reality is that many, or even most, QB prospects fail to complete step 2.
