Latest on Gilmore

Based on how he played last year, and assuming all our DB's are healthy, I don't see a starting role for Gilmore at the Patriots. And I assume that's what he'd want, along with the commensurate salary.

I think some folk are conflating 2019 Gilmore with 2024 Gilmore. He's still serviceable, but he's nowhere near the player he was.
His next move is to lay low and stay in condition until a starting CB goes down in camp and is basically out for the season.

Then some team will come calling seeking to fill that void offering the highest compensation.

The Pat’s are already at 90 players and they’re also deep at CB, I don’t see them brining Gilmore back now.

Not sure why people are acting like Gilmore is JC Jackson. Gilmore may not be elite like he was here but he still played pretty well last year. With that being said I want to see what we have here first. Can Alex Austin, Marco Wilson, or Isiah Bolden step into that outside corner role opposite Gonzo so we can move Jon Jones back into the slot? If Jones is back in the slot where does Marcus Jones end up? Maybe a dime or situational matchup guy? Does Dial enter the mix at all positions in the secondary or does he end up with the Foxboro Flu?

If we get into August and it doesn't look like any of these guys are the answer on the outside I would be fine paying Gilmore for a year while they develop someone else but ideally our starting corners are already on the roster.

I think Gilmore is better than any possible CB2 we have on the team at the moment (mostly due to inexperience). But does it matter in 2024? Maybe not. Play the young guys.

A CB being completely overlooked is Marco Wilson, he arrived late last season but has the athleticism to be great. They need to coach up any bad habits he may have inherited by playing on a terrible Arizona defense, but he could make that DB room look really good if they all stay healthy and the defensive front do their job.

I also like UDFA Azizi Hearn that they brought in, he has good athleticism and size.

I keep forgetting for some reason.

The guy is a ridiculously good athlete and was strong exiting college, he had the misfortune of joining one of the worst teams and defenses in the NFL. Let's see if he looks better on a better defense and with some NFL experience under his belt.

He's not coming here, but, personally, I think the players could benefit from his professionalism. Personally. They have a couple of guys especially the aforementioned Wilson and Alex Austin that would benefit. Anyway, hopefully 2-14 won't demoralize them.

Wilson seems like the wildcard of the group. He started a pretty good amount of games under Arizona's old regime and was their number one guy starting last season. Wilson is super athletic and has good size so hopefully a change of scenery will boost his confidence and the staff can coach him up.

Oh, yes. The Patriots need to get older and slower with teams like Buffalo, Miami and the Jets in the division. What are we talking about?

If the Patriots are going to sign a free agent, he should be a wide receiver or a left tackle.

Even if the number of wins is not the ultimate goal next year, it is still important to field the best team possible to create real competition for playing time and lay the foundation for a winning culture. The team should look to bring in vets like Gilmore on short term deals as part of the routine roster building process. The young players will benefit more from fighting for playing time vs being put on the field to sink or swim before they have earned their spot on the field. Best case the young guys win the job and players like Gilmore are backups or traded at the end of camp.

Like who? I feel like most went onto play pretty well elsewhere so I'm just curious who I'm not thinking of?

Not saying there's a whole passle of them out there but Butler comes immediately to mind. Our man Scraps tailed off fairly fast

I believe we are going to suprise people this season, and will be a tough out for teams each week. This defense is disrespected.. this offense will be leaps and bounds improved. I agree on gilly, but I believe he's in wait n see mode.

Meanwhile we had a deep CB group with an budding elite young player in Gonzo and some great veterans.. some young guys that played well last season. I really believe Austin is primed for success across from gonzo As CB2.

Yeah agree, from superbowl hero to providence mug shots...

Ain't nothing but re-treads and nothing.

Butler and JC Jackson come to mind
I'm inclined to believe there are more because that reinforces my point and I love to be right, but they're not coming to mind right now. Am I missing a safety or two? Logan Ryan went on to have a pretty great few years in Tenn. so I don't think he'd qualify.

I'd say those are two examples and I'd think there are more but not much comes to mind.

Logan Ryan, Asante Samuel, Kenny Moore, Stephon Gilmore, Duron Harmon, and Aqib Talib all had success after leaving here.

Agreed, but on gilly.. I go back and forth because he absolutely played the best ball of his career in NE.. he was "ok" after he left here. He's still a solid veteran not a #1 anymore But absolutely solid. Yeah Ryan, Samuel Harmon all went on to play well elsewhere.. Talib suddenly became healthy when he signed with Denver.
