In his conference call with the New England media this morning, Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini commented on this report in Newsday that said the Patriots confiscated a camera from a Jets employee who was filming during a New England-New York game last year at Gillette Stadium. “What we do at every away game is we [...]

Thanks, Chris.

What. A. Weasel.

But what Mangini describes there is absolutely ILLEGAL. It is breaking the same rule the Patriots did, just in a different spot. Amazing how little traction that UNDENIABLE FACT will get.

And he admits to doing it practically every game.

And he speaks in the present tense, which means he's doing it this season.

This is just fantastic.

I thought that Tannenbaum DENIED the taping story.
Eric just confirmed it.
Said they 'tape every game from both ends' of the field.
Said he had permission.

If there was a reporter worth his salt he'd have asked, "Who on the Patriots, name please, gave you permission?"

So wait, the man who was the protege to the original cheater and was under him when it was going on also cheats?

STOP.
THE.
PRESSES.

If it's the same rule that was broken then the Jets should get exactly the same.

"Did you have permission?"
"Yes, we did."

As has been pointed out earlier today ...
merely having been issued a field pass
can be construed as "having permission"
- construed, that is, in this age of wiggly words.

PatSox seems to be correct. Against league rule because
not "enclosed on all sides and roofed".

Was the NFL videotaping rule documented and in force last season? The reason I ask is that there was a big deal made of Goodell's letter to all teams prior to this season clarifying and reinforcing this rule. Was it made less ambiguous before this season, or has the exact same rule been documented and in effect all along?

I don't know if that matters, because Mangini admits to doing it currently.

Permission is irrelevant. As I pointed out in another thread, this is like running a red light and then telling the cop when you get pulled over: "I was allowed to run the red because the other driver at the intersection waved me through." The other driver (or the other team, in this case) doesn't have the authority to grant that consent.

Good point, and if Mangini is claiming they're doing it currently, which I did not read, then Goodell needs to step in.

I don't see that in the Newsday article regarding the Jets doing videotaping this season. Do you have a quote?

“What we do at every away game is we tape our team from both end zones, whenever it’s possible. We always ask for permission to do that. Usually, it’s granted, provided there’s a physical space to do that. We try and get the same angle we do in practice. Anybody that asks us to do it, we extend the same courtesy. It’s pretty common, one way or the other, depending on how teams like to look at their game tape, and that’s really what it was.”

Note the tense. Should be fairly easy to prove.

In his press conference today, he said they tape road games this year.

You can find the video at www.nyjets.com

Here's the quote:

He seems to be saying that the Jets and other teams continue taping in an illegal manner.

I want the draft picks restored.

Now that Mangini has admitted to filming in an illegal area and were ejected, doesn't the Jets have to provide proof that the Pats gave prior permission to film or face league sanctions? I can't see how Goodell cannot act now unless the Jets provide proof of such permission. Otherwise, the Jets have admitted to doing the same exact thing as the Patriots that cost $750k in fines and a first round draft pick.

Pats CANNOT "Give permission"

You're on the right track, Rob.
But ... as another poster has pointed out ... "getting permission" is irrelevant.
It is not within the Patriots' power to give permission to violate a league rule.

Commissioner Badell already is on record that this is
a very important matter
of fairness and fair play.

Actually what most people liked to say is that the memo was issued Sept 1 when the game against the Jets was played on Sept 9th but in REALITY the memo was issued on Sept 6 of 2006. doesn't make for as good a story tho I guess

edited to fix my brainfart dates
