With the amount of cap space they have it’s kind of necessary.

I also expect the cap to continue to rise each year, so a deal that might seem rich now won’t look that way in a couple years
Yes

Why would they restructure?
Well I'm just being speculative I have no real answer as to why they would. However it's all depends if they see them part of the team going forward.

But that's why you don't waste $ on a tag. You can't manipulate it since it's only for 1 year. You tag players like Higgins, Winfield, Jr., a franchise QB, not an average to good player. Even if you were paying two players $21M apy, you could sign them both with the $21M by deferring their 1st yr hit into the future. I strongly doubt Pats tag any player.
I think this offseason there projects to be alot of top tier players cut. For example Miami is supposed to be releasing Howard still a top CB we definitely should be in on him.

To be more clear, why would the players restructure?

Of course the players wouldn't want to restructure.. no player of course wants to give up money.. and I agree they shouldn't. I'm just speaking on whether or not they are part of the build back. They aren't terrible players. Just curious as to what mayo wants to do regarding them.

Sorry, I still don't understand.

The players have guaranteed contracts and the team cannot save cap money by cutting them.

Wolf may try to trade them, but keeping them for 2024 seems much more likely.

Sorry for the confusion. I guess what I'm trying to say is looking at that Parker and juju missed time, when they were on the field they had little production. They both benefited from getting new deals in 2023. Parkers extension was surprising as juju was signed to supposedly replace Myers. So given all that being said I was just wondering does the team elect to cut, trade or ask them to restructure thier deals? If I had to guess Parker is dealt and juju remains.

Interesting.. even with juju and Parker both having signed new deals a season ago? I was thinking maybe a restructuring?

I think Parker isn't worth keeping in the way of young players. I think Bourne is a better player than Parker. Bourne is what I call a Catalyst type player. When Bourne is on the field. Things happen. Either directly or indirectly. We saw this particularly late in his first year here. His second was marred by the fact that Patricia was a jackass, over-promising, under-delivering and not relying on the players who actually had played in the system they were trying to draw from. Bourne was our best WR last season before going down. The pace he was on, he'd have had over 100 targets. And probably would have been close to 1000 yards. DESPITE how bad the offense was.

If they re-sign Bourne, even on a prove-it deal, His attitude and energy will be a benefit to the team.
I think if you add MHJ in the draft to go with Douglas, Thornton and Bourne, you harm the development of MHJ, Douglas and Thornton by keeping a Parker or JJSS around. Bourne IS someone who then can easily come off the bench to spell either of those three provided he's healthy. JJSS could do it if healthy, but I don't think he's going to be, all things considered. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he's gone with some kind of insurance settlement because of the injury from the Chiefs.

At the very least we’ll have a good idea of what the Patriots are planning to spend going forward. If they miss out on every top FA and nicks and dime ofte-injured guys and replacements we’ll know they haven’t fixed that root of the problem

Question: does the increase in salary cap correspondingly increase the tag numbers?

Yes, they all went up.

There's many issues with your takes.

1. Parker is signed thru 2025. He's not going anywhere unless you want to take a dead money hit.
2. Same, but worse, goes for JuJu.
3. You have no clue how JuJu is coming back, now over a year removed from his knee injury.
4. Bourne is coming off a recent nasty injury himself. He's nothing special. I doubt he gets re-signed. Bourne is also a different receiver than Parker.
5. You indicating the signing of MHJ means no QB w/ #3. What QB will be throwing to MHJ?

Holy smokes. Not sure how to feel here, now everyone will have money.

What does this project us compared to early projections?

The 2023 NFL Salary cap was 224.8m. If the 2024 cap is now 255.4, that's an additional increase of 31m.

That means since the Patriots cap space before this news was reported at 69m (nice!) it now rises to a super healthy 100m dollars for Kraft to spend. He better open that wallet WIDE OPEN cos Mayo promised to BURN some of that money!

We have ZERO excuses not to go after some premium free agents. We have big needs at WR and OT. Let's fill some of those needs in free agency so we can take the draft with a more flexibile approach.

Don't you know that there are some people who still believe in Mac Jones? I mean BB never makes mistakes in the draft right so obviously Jones is due for a comeback!

Not for this year. Cap numbers increase based on the top 5 salaries at each of the designated positions.

I don't see either one willingly taking a pay cut to stay on the team. Parker is less of a Cap hit as a post June 1st cut because of the Signing bonus amortization.

The fact that we've heard ZERO on JJSS to this point tells me he's likely done. That there will be some kind of settlement and the pats will get money back in 2025. If I'm wrong and he suits up, ok, but the silence is deafening.

They can't manufacture players, and the consensus is that there isn't a single good FA OT out there worthy of a major contract. The only one on the list that's worth signing is our own guy.

The WR that will be available are aging and thus probably won't be around when they have finished the rebuild and are ready to compete for championships.

Lots of "excuses."

Can we trade cap for draft picks please. would gladly give Kansas 20m cap for #32, imagine a slide scale of 1m cap a spot so.. #23 pick is 30m cap.. #18 pick is 35m cap.. #8 pick is 45m cap... #1 is 52m cap space. Imagine that set scale by NFL.

Does Kansas have any dead money contracts with a year remaining to that value of 20m..

swap player with 1 year dead money 20m or players to that 20m dead money plus #32 for a 7th
No, no, please NFL - do not change the rules and allow the trading of cap space to happen.

If teams are allowed to trade cap space, then the salary cap would become meaningless. The NFL would turn into major league baseball in terms of disparity between team's spending. We would end up with an equivalent of the Yankees and Dodgers outspending other teams like the Rays and A's by a factor of 2x, 3x, 4x.

A level playing field is what has made the NFL the nation's most popular sport, going back to when Pete Rozelle convinced big market team owners - Wellington Mara (New York), Dan Reeves (Los Angeles), George Halas (Chicago) - to split television revues equally between all teams. Rozelle sold them on the idea that the NFL product would be more appealing to fans with all teams on equal footing, and as a result they would benefit in the long run. Rozelle was right.

Being allowed to trade cap space will result in a major competitive disparity. Certain owners like Jerry Jones will do everything possible to buy a championship. Smaller market team owners will not even try to be competitive, instead being happy with pocketing the financial windfall from television contrats. That is not a scenario any NFL fan should want to see.

This is easily the most interesting offseason to me in years and years. I’m looking forward to seeing all of the decisions they have to make in free agency and the draft, and the construction of their new offense.
