Drake Maye would be the IDEAL pick for the Patriots at #3

It is heresy to think that, but there are definitely some similarities beyond being at Michigan.

So, has the big 3 QB prospects evolved into the big 4 now?

I have seen a few posters point out that McCarthy is a game manager.

Isn’t that the same criticism we heard about Brady early in his career?
Klatt has McCarthy as his 5th QB, but that he has some elite traits but just hasn’t been asked to use them. He said someone like Penix would make 15-20 NFL style reads per game, where McCarthy was only doing 3-7 per game. He has to prove he can go through multiple reads and be able to run a pro offence, but he does have huge upside.

I am a self proclaimed JJ truther and I admit he is very raw, but his ability on 3rd and long has impressed me. I find it especially impressive when he would rarely get into a rhythm as a passer. It is a small sample size of passes but when Michigan needed him the most he came through. It stuck out to me so much because we were so bad on 3rd down last year.

interesting stat to use

Nix came out very well also

Great post. If either daniels or Maye have it , then its a no Brainer pick one of them . Sit them this year while offensive line develops and start them mid season. If they are the real deal I would be happy if we can tank for 2024 and get the 2025 first pick so that we trade it fir future assets and immediately build the team to contender status in 2025.
No more tanking. Your start a winning culture from day one of a rebuild. Nobody is signing up as a free agent to intentionally lose games.

I just think McCarthy is going in the Top 15 as far as what pundits are saying
A lot of QB needy teams in Top of draft
Edit: If they like McCarthy just as much
Trade down to say 11 and grab McCarthy
Withn extra picks move up fir a LT
I personally like McCarthy more than Maye so I’d love to see that happen.

At this point I won't be mad if Maye, Daniels or JJ is a Patriot after the draft. Absolutely not a fan of Fields and would rather pass on Penix and Nix.

If we can make a small trade down and still get McCarthy, that would be the best outcome because even just one extra 2nd or high 3rd could result in us also landing a top OT and WR.
But a move down seems risky, there’s several QB needy teams between 6 and 12, and AZ (4) and LAC (5) could trade down. The top 4 QB’s could easily go in the top 5.

McCarthy is a 2nd round prospect being boosted into the first round based on raw talent and desperation for a QB.
He's not legitimately a first-round prospect.
You really need to project him 2-3 years out. I think because of the 5th year option on first rounders he's in Jordan Love territory, should be taken in the mid 20's, sit for 2 years and hopefully develop. He needs to add weight, he's lighter than Daniels!
He needs A TON of work, it is all projection here, not usually the type of prospect drafted in round 1.
I have a hard time picking a 2nd round project at QB in the top half of the first round, odds are really low on success with these types of players.

This is true but I like him way better than I liked Jones 3 years ago. My argument back then was something along the lines of "if you like Jones that much- fine, you take him in the 2nd or 3rd round due to his lack of physical tools."

I would have the opposite argument for McCarthy. You take him in the 1st round because he has the physical talent of a 1st rounder.

Yes. He won’t be ready for a year. But he’s got the arm talent, mobility, and leadership, and after the combine he’ll be a top 10 pick

All of what you guys are saying is....we should make sure we have an offensive line and receivers to make sure whatever rookie QB we get doesn't die?

I think Klatt has captured the way most scouts are looking at this draft. There is Williams and Maye...and then a huge drop off to Daniels, JJ and Bo.
Unfortunately the Pats are in the 3 position. No chance to get Maye.
If they draft a QB that guy has to have leadership skills and cred
Daniels is clearly the better athlete but JJ is a clutch leader. I would prefer the clutch leader.

If Maye is gone at 3 (likely) I would do the trade with the Giants, pick up 3 extra 2nd rounders and pick up JJ McCarthy at 6.

Yes except we have to be sure QB’s 3 and 4 aren’t gone by then. Klatt paints a picture of them sliding which is probably not accurate, especially if they go off at the combine. Think Anthony Richardson.

This is exactly where my mind is at right now. I think Maye looks like a franchise quarterback. I’m hoping Washington goes for Daniels, who I think has become overrated, and we can draft Maye at 3. If not, trade down just a bit to pick up another early round pick to help fill out the roster and take McCarthy.

Most of the way through the college season, absolutely no one was talking about Daniels being a first round pick never mind the number 2 or 3 pick. A month ago McCarthy was projected to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick. It’s funny how hype works and how fast these things change. It will be interesting how much it continues to change during and after the combine and pro days.

Brady wasn’t a game manager at Michigan, he put up much better numbers than McCarthy, and he had to do it playing behind a QB who wasn’t as good as him, and playing part time.

As far as the “ game manager” tag goes I would still argue that Brady’s game management was what made him the GOAT, as he was able to synchronize it to both the overall game strategy and game situations. The best examples of this was his record when leading in the 3rd quarter, as he could slow the game down, chew up time, and deny the opponent the chance to catch up, and 28-3 was the best example of the opposite side that spectrum.

If McCarthy is there at 6. We would need to ready to sign at least two of the 2nd tier QB's if we move down to 6 or perhaps even 8.

If we don't want Daniels, I am fine with this.

If I were choosing I'd take MHJ with the #3 pick
