There were and still are serviceable back ups on the street. No one who would knock your socks off, but better than Zappe or Grier. Nick Foles is still available. Carson Wentz was available until last week. There are others.

The second that Belichick lost faith in Zappe and deemed him cutable, he should have reached out to one of the seasoned veterans even if he had faith in Mac at that point. You cannot go into the season with no back up QB you trust.
Thing is we don't know if it was a Hoyer wink wink cut sign back up be put back on roster arrangement - had to be since it sounds like Zap had offers from 7 other teams to sign with their PS. Sadly, imho, BB did set Zappe up for failure probably on purpose in that Week 3 preseason game to make him look really bad to dissuade others from an outright claim (1st string OL vs 4th string OL, WR8 as best receiver, etc).

I think that tells you how little they think of Foles and Wentz.

Nah! I don't think that had anything to do with it. I just listed two guys. There are other decent back up that were or even still are available. I just don't know if Belichick wanted a seasoned veteran with a lot of starting experience on the roster for whatever reason.

I feel sorry for Mac. He has been negligently and to me fireably mishandled, ill-coached, and from a roster standpoint incompetently surrounded with talent. Nevertheless, given the toll the stresses of his mishandling have taken on his game and mind, Mac must sit. I wish him well, but he can't be on the field. I'd see what if anything Grier has to offer. Malik ain't ready, and Zappe...stinks. Winning is now optional. This season is now entirely about next season and seasons following. It's time just to face the facts of the team's dismal state and act on it.

Word is Belichick soured on Hoyer for speaking out against Patricia and Judge. He was basically IRed for the season last year for what looked to be a minor at best concussion.

And as much as people have talked about how Belichick set Mac up for failure, he has really done the same thing for Zappe this year with repeatedly cutting the guy.

He probably shouldn't. But the way Zappe ended that game probably means he's hard sell now too. And I've seen no indication they trust Cunningham. So maybe Grier....?

The QB room sucks so much that something that shouldn't be a quetsion is now a question
Is there a worse QB room in the league?

Giants?

When they were flailing around after cutting Bailey, I think they decided not to go the Foles/Wentz route. There was talk for trading for a backup (on the Raiders, I think). I honestly think they think they'd rather have someone young they can try to coach up rather than a vet with really bad tendencies.

It is amazing to me that Zappe looked like a functional backup QB with a DC calling plays and he has looked like this since getting a real OC. The regression from so many of these young players has been a killer for us.
It’s clear that the BOB system doesn’t fit his skill set. Zappe is not a processor, he is a gunslinger.

Good gravy maybe this is BB's version of tanking.

He's neither. Gunslingers have a good arm that can make big plays and Zappe doesn't.

We should have kept Stiddy who looked better than who we currently have with limited reps.

Accurate

So this is the real question. Who's fault is it for the 2022 and 2023 **** shows at the Qb position?

I believe BB had questions about Mac after the 2021 season and wanted Mac gone after the 2022 season. Bill was motivated by Kraft to keep him and invest in an OC and the WR position. We can debate if those were 1/2 measures by Bill out of spite or just bad GM-ing. Probably both as he didn't see it worth resources investing in Mac or Zappe because his evaluation was already done.

Either way...Bill the GM missed on a critical 1st rd pick and/or was ineffective standing up to his owner and telling him he needed a different QB as Mac was not going to cut it. If that is true Bob meddling in roster decisions is very bad.

...or the position requires the QB to grow, expand improve and their physical/mental ceiling didn't allow it.

Right, but let's say he had dumped Mac in 2022. Who do we have now? Jimmy G? Somehow I don't see that working out any better than Mac. Who was the draft pick we should have gotten and should be playing? It's very easy to say that the writing was on the wall with Mac, but it's less easy to see a path where the Pats still don't suck right now.

More evidence to the fact they ran a completely vanilla offense in those Zappe games last year. Weird that those were some of our best games offensively in a while though.

Yes, no, maybe?

Ostensibly he's not that good... but he is better than both Zappe and Grier...

Does he start?

Do we really have a choice but to start him?

??
My gut tells me no. However who knows what to expect from this unrecognizable patriots team. By now.. we all know what he is, know what Zapp is, Grier is an unknown with this offense.

Jimmy is a better QB than Mac and it's not close.

The question was would Jimmy stay healthy enough to prove it here.

You can’t go back to Mac unless there’s an injury or the next QB plays terrible.

Jimmy has been worse than Mac this year with better weapons. I wouldn’t touch Garropolo with a 10 foot pole

Please No on Jimmy G he make too much $$$$$ just being on IR.
